Brownells Gun Techs Steve Ostrem and Caleb Savant are wearing their Smyth Buster hats today as they take on this old chestnut: Dropping the slide on a semi-auto pistol with a round in the chamber can break the extractor. So, can it? Caleb says... "It depends on the gun." Modern external extractors are highly resistant to breakage (e.g., Glock, Sig Sauer, M&P, CZ 75, the current Browning Hi-Power). Older, 1911-type internal extractors may not have enough room to flex as they slide over the cartridge rim. It also depends on whether the extractor's tension is properly adjusted. If it's too tight or isn't properly polished and contoured, the extractor won't ride over the rim of the case, and it may break. On most modern pistols, the round actually rides up from the magazine under the extractor as the slide closes. Metal quality is an issue, too: there's a reason why the top gunmakers make their extractors out of tool steel. So this myth is.... NOT BUSTED. It IS valid with certain guns. If it's a well-made, high-quality pistol with a properly installed extractor, it's safe to drop the slide with a round in the chamber. Be much more careful on an older or cheaper gun.
