@pauldurkee What should happen and what happens after severe abuse are two different things. The internal torment continues. Wery often, in cases like these, the victims are too traumatized and even ashamed. They don't have any strength left to take legal action. The law has failed many victims and even sides with the purbotrators, who are sly, cunning, and convincing. It is also painful to relive the trauma when judges pull the victim apart to "establish the truth." Even though justice is the ultimate victory on behalf of other victims. The calm after the storm very often causes misplaced guilt and shame. Lick the wounds in private and withdraw from society that allowed the abuse to continue.

This story just gets worse by the day. Welby knew about it and kept silent , he is happy to give reparations to others for slavery which happened so long ago that none of these slaves are still alive to claim anything. These survivors are victims of his complicit silence and should get compensation for their suffering first , either out of Welby`s own pocket or the C of E .

I'm surprised that we haven't seen any law firms organising a '' class act '' for compensation for all those abused ?

@@Rock-x5s Smyth was a lawyer, not a priest. The legal profession protects its own: they are the "new priesthood".

Welby stood by as Reverend Dr Bernard Randall was sacked and disgraced for preaching a moderate sermon on LGBTQ issues. It is justice that he now suffers the loss of his own job and disgrace. The difference between Reverend Dr Randall and Welby is that Dr Randall did nothing. Absolutely nothing in anyway causative of his punishment. Welby, on the other hand, may well deserve this outcome. I hope Welby’s current predicament is sufficient to make him reconsider his allegiances.

Of course they wont get compensation, the same as the post office scandal and the waspis! They just talk about it for years until all the victims have died! 😢😢

So you hit various church of England pension funds to help compensate these victims . Isn't that so Welby. We want to apologise, but we don't want to compensate you financially.

When is the Church going to stop using the parishioners like a brothel. What is wrong with these old men. And people need to stop supporting their crimes

Why oh why in this day and age do we take the words of clerics, this applies to ALL religions, as honourable and trustworthy people. If anything we should apply extra caution when anyone claims to be a minister, and nothing they say should be treated as fact.

Watching the interview with Ian Paul makes me glad I'm an atheist. If he is expressing the Christian viewpoint then I want nothing to do with Christianity.

Strong elements in the Anglican church are still trying to weasel out of their responsibility to the victims. They are terrified that the Smyth case will cause other cases of abuse within the Church to be highlighted and more people to demand apologies and compensations. They do not know where it will end. I think that flood needs to happen and the Anglican church needs to apologise and pay up. They are a wealthy institution. They just cause a whole load of new hurt with their legal quibbles. Not just the Yewen camps but all Anglican and Christian camps need to be investigated - by people who are trained in such matters and are outside the church such as senior police officers and social workers. It is absolutely no damn good expecting the church to patrol itself.

A loophole and they MUST compensate ALL victims! They are now liars and ARE STILL standing by him even in his death!!!! For sexual abuse!!!

the only thing worse than the abuser are the people who enable them. they don't do the abusing themselves but ensure that the conditions are present for the abuse to take place.

He should face the law fully. Saying sorry is so lame.He and all those who knew (many) should all face jail and their pensions handed over to the victims

Does he think that will help them knowing he kept his mouth closed even if it was carried out here there or any where there abuse is life changing mentally and emotional even the very sad loss of life. His lack of actions is unforgivable for me personally. Its not about the compensation its seen the church take strong positive and visible action in the public eye. He still feels he is entitled to keep title and pension. when the church wants past slaves to receive finances for historic cruel slavery trade

Old boys network again . Too rich and powerful to be bothered with Christian values and 'lower ' people. Satan indeed has many 'hands' helping him in his evil work within the Christian church . Expose this to the light and those complicit should face prosecution , defrocking and permanent expulsion from the Church .
