SNAGGING IN SEWARD vs flossing…
In this video I set out to try and clear up the difference between “Flossing” and “Snagging” fish. It has been a long, long debate amongst anglers and id like to (SHOW) the difference and hopefully change some people’s opinion. We can never please everyone, but this is our 2 cents on the topic.
Now to start off Snagging is legal here, in June, in Seward, for sockeye and kings because they are hatchery and it’s a saltwater area. so, every year 1000s of people head to the Seward beaches and lagoons to fill their coolers.
Snagging requiring very little skill to achieve a catch also requires very little gear such as
-an ugly stick
-a box of weighted treble hooks
-waders
-perhaps a sled or cart
-and standard carryon tools
To my knowledge the catch limit is 6 per day 6 in possession. If the fishing is good. Sometimes Fish n game will bump the limit up to 9-12 per day! Talk about a lot of fish! The best time iv seen is going at low tide, but you can still catch them in high tide as you will see in this video. If you want the most success id just camp overnight but if you’re on a day trip adventure, there free parking a ways little past the campground on Nash road. While you’re there you might even get lucky to see some seals chasing the sockeye in. after you’ve had your fill of snagging you can head back out towards bear creek where you can see all the 1000s of fish the got past all the hooks in the water. Its quite a sight! Maybe even actually see a bear! But be safe.
Seward is a great little town with a lot to offer far as fishing goes and some day soon ill be making another video perhaps down at millers landing or a charter. Who knows!?

Alaska is one of the most beautiful States in the Country. I lived in Kodiak out od high school back in the late 70's. The Buskin River produced some of the nicest Coho. And Saltry Cove... Man miss that place. You are right that using a treble hook to snag is in fact snagging. With flossing (at least here in Washington) where the regulations are clear. The fish has to "voluntarily" take the hook "in it's mouth". In the absence of that, it is "snagging". But that is here in Washington and like yu said, every state is different. Tight lines!

Iv heard a few have swam in but not enough to make the trip worth it. I believe the silvers start showing up around the 10th of July and can be fished till sept 2nd. The reds are calming down out there as well. So maybe this week to next of over lap. We will be posting updates on the Facebook page this month! Https://facebook.com/fishingthelastfrontier/

How much drag sound you have when snagging
@fishinalaskawithandy907
@fishinalaskawithandy907 2 жыл бұрын
When your snagging, you generally use heavy line so drag isnt a big deal but as a rule of thumb, no matter what im fishing for i always allow the fish to pull on the drag as fast as a creaky door opens. The fish will rip that hook out to get away and we dont want that. So long as it can pull alittle you'll be alright. For more tip and advice check out our Facebook page! Would assume you’d bonk them and put them on a stringer in the water🤷‍♂️

By law you have to carry your fish with you. You cannot put them on a stringer tied to shore. This is due to how it attracts bears too close to humans. If a bear approaches and you can’t get away from it, untie your stringer and let it go down the river. You’ll be out your salmon because they still count towards your limit, but you’ll be alive. Pretty good trade, no?

I hit the run a few days after it was changed. It was a carpet of fish! I’d say no more than 2 casts between fish. The best part was I remembered to take a cutting board. I can’t imagine carrying 12 fish back to the truck. Carrying 12 fillets was bad enough!

Who cares, both methods are not ,not sport fishing. Spoons,flies,bait these are sport fishing methods Alaska should try !

Some people are purists. Some don't consider it fly fishing less you use a bobber or a midge hook and some including our crew see flipping as a form of fly fishing. Its mostly coming from out of staters. Alaska has a unique system. We do it all here and that's just weird to some people 🤷‍♂️

No one refers to it as sport fishing. It’s a harvest, plain and simple. Why? Because sockeye do not eat once they start their migration. What techniques do you have for catching a fish that won’t bite anything because all it can think of is SEXSEXSEX? Everyone around the world would be very interested in learning that technique that it seems only you know of.
