I’m never too hard on people who drop off animals in this condition because what matters most to me is that they aren’t holding onto them *anymore* and they have ultimately done what’s right by surrendering them, and that should be encouraged. It's a fine line to walk, right? You don't want them to "hide" their bad deeds by never bringing their neglected pet in, but you also don't want to make them feel like they did nothing wrong either because it might encourage them to get another pet to neglect later....

12 grams on an adult fat tail/ leopard gecko is CRAZY. Females should weigh 30-50 grams, males should weigh 60-80. Thank God the people surrendered them and the animals were able to get healthy! Thank you Emily & Ed (and all the SD crew ) for all you do!

We adopted a Leo last summer who was only 20 grams and was so so hungry. She’s nice and plump now and very happy. Onyx is what we named her and she’s just wonderful.

I think part of the reason is that he doesn’t like being grabbed. I have a leopard gecko who loves to be handled but HATES her back being touched. The fact little Emily was holding him without grabbing him is excellent because it shows how calm he can be.

But we dont know the circonstance so we can't really juge how the animals became like that . Sometimes the owners are hospitalised and the relative try the best to take care of the animals but cant . Or a bad case of mental health like schizophrenia, spycosis etc

I don't entirely disagree, but I will add one caveat: There is a lot of information, yes, but there is a lot of CONFLICTING information, and it can be hard to discern which is reliable and which is not. There's a whole world of really bad advice around animal husbandry on the internet, and it's easy to be taken in by terrible advice confidently delivered. Oh wow, poor babies. I really hate it when people get animals but don’t take care of them properly. It wouldn’t take a genius to work out that these guys shouldn’t look like this. A bit of research would tell you a lot about how to care for them. I know next to nothing about their care but I found out in 10 seconds of googling how often they need feeding. My son wanted a lizard when he was younger and I went online to find out about them I had an 8ft Green Iguana when I was 15 my dad new animal activist and we took him in and my dad built him a huge cage and everything. I spent this summer losing my mind when my meds needed to be adjusted but part of those loose marbles was always attuned to the cat that does not have thumbs and cannot feed himself. Jumping at shadows, gotta feed the cat, scared the whole time, feed cat or cat will die. That's how the brain mantra went. Anxiety is like hearing the battle music start up and there's nothing around.

This video really just made me look at my gecko and ask "what are you" as she's been eating 1-2 crickets a week for several months now and she's still in the upper margin of a healthy weight. Her metabolism is mental health friendly I guess. It scared me early on as I thought something was wrong with her. Nope, she just has weird metabolism, so I feed rarely. As long as she's not loosing weight it's all good.

You guys helped inspire me to get my own little cold blooded baby. I’ve had my Eastern Blue Tongue for almost 5 months now, and she’s become my companion, and in a bit of a twist she’s actually improved my chronic pain by me just having to get up more often to take care of her, she even comes out with me in my wheelchair sometimes! I try to socialise her as much as I can in the hopes of someday use her to help teach people about reptiles like you guys! Love everything you do, and I hope to see you come to Australia some time!! I wouldn’t advise herping down here though 😅

I'm happy that the person finally realized they could not take care of these sweet babies and surrendered them, but I don't think I'd react to them kindly if I was in the same room. Most cell phones have reminders you can set on your calendar, your email can send you reminders. The fact they kept buying more and more of these guys... I understand that mental, physical, and medical issues can result in neglecting yourself, but your pets and human children can never be part of that excuse. I've known people that, even in their darkest moments, always made sure their dependents were fed either by themselves or by someone they trusted to watch them. "Forgetting to feed" to the point where some of these geckos look like they're just weeks away from passing away is inexcusable. Props to Emily and Ed for not blaming the owner and instead put all of there energy into saving these animals. They are way kinder and more forgiving than myself.

I have been so inspired by Snake Discovery’s Adoption Island that when I am able to, I want to start my own Reptile Nonprofit Rescue here in Northern Alberta’s biggest city. So, so many people try to rehome their pets or sell them because they can’t keep them and I want to give people an option to not have to overwhelm the local humane society that don’t have the time to look after these animals. Thank you Emily and Ed so, so much for doing such a great job with trying to save all these sweet scale babies and for giving me the inspiration and incentive to make the best change for the community I can. 🦎🐢🐍💙😎

Tardis looks just like what my rescue leopard gecko looked like. We syringe fed her for about a week before she was willing to eat on her own. She's now healthy, active and loving attention. Snake discovery videos taught me everything I needed to know to save her. Thank you.

People get pets at times due to emotional needs without understanding the responsibility in taking care of said pets. Covid-19 Pandemic had a very large uptick in people getting pets and I'm sure a lot of them ended up in shelters or sold to someone else.

(Of course, it has increased since 2020, but that's because 2020 had very, very low relinquish rates, not because it's so much higher right now.) But with all the inflation and housing issues, I think a lot of people relinquish cats and dogs because they can't afford to keep them. If your rent goes up 40% and the only place you can afford doesn't allow pets... 😔

As understanding and respectful as Emily and Ed are (in fact, you HAVE to be in order to run a rescue) you don't "forget" to feed a living thing. You make the decision that the living thing isn't important enough to be cared for properly and it's just enraging to let it get this bad. Malicious or otherwise, these animals were neglected and borderline abused and I wish people took this seriously enough to report it (and I'm sure snake discovery has enough discretion and experience to know how to navigate cases like this, I'm talking on a more broader scale) I'm just so thankful Ed and Emily care so much to rehab and show the respect animals deserve!

Reminds me of when my partner lived with a roommate who had a beautiful little leopard gecko that they simply neglected to feed ever. Partner kept reminding them and they would lie about having fed her. Eventually they took pictures to show a vet and on their advice snuck big fat juicy worms for her to eat while the roommate was at work. She regained her weight over time thankfully🙏

This is amazing. We need more people like this in the world. I remember when all there animals were in there house, and instead of an incubator they used a heated closet😂 The recovery of these geckos is amazing, and I love this. This channel sparked my interest in reptiles, and I now own a leopard gecko named sunflower who is about a year and a half old, and I love her. Without them, I would not be the same person I am. I love the humor in there videos, but I also love that there is still and educational aspect to their videos. The growth of their Chanel in the past few years is remarkable, and I hope that one day I can visit their zoo, and look forward to continuing to watch their Chanel grow.

I'm one of those people who would LOVE to own lots of reptiles, marine, bird, and animal life, but who knows myself well enough that I would not be able to take care of them all. For reference, I breed leopard geckos a couple years back, and a few of my babies got to be 12 grams when they were just one month old, so 12 grams is an insanely small size for an adult. Also, I have an adult leopard gecko who randomly went off food for 3 months a couple years ago and she lost like 5 grams tops, which just goes to show you how long these guys must have been fed so poorly. That stick tail does not happen over night, that is months if not over a year of consistent neglect.

One of the Leo's I took on was 23g and she's now around 80+ depending on her poop status... that's mental to me and she was 14 at the age of her rescue. How anyone can abandon them so badly is beyond me

Just a reminder to those in the comments. It can be hard to see animals like this, and I know the first thing is get angry at the owners and go "How could they do this". But, keep in mind we don't know what the owners were going through to lead them to this, how long it had been going on, or much about the owners situation in general. Many owners love their pets to a fault and don't want to give them away for any reason, but this person did the right thing. They couldn't care properly for their pet and they knew that, so they brought them in to surrender them. Don't be angry and hostile, be understanding yet firm. Don't get mad at people who have stuff happen in their life and they can't take care of animals. Help them, point out what they are doing wrong, offer to send them text to feed their animals, or offer transportation of their animals to rescues. If you have animals like this, and you don't want to get rid of them because you love them. It's okay, you can hand them to someone who can give them the care they need and *still* love them. I know it is hard, but it is better than your animal suffering under your hands, even if you don't mean to do it.

This is a long comment. I hope you read it still. I never had any reptiles before, but I always wanted to get a bearded dragon. A friend of mine had a number of them and they were super cute. She told me I could have one and see how it goes. I'm not that kind of person to just try raising a living animal without learning what they need to thrive. I did learn from someone reputable about what I would need for a bearded dragon. I eventually got Fred after learning about all of the things I needed for him before I got him and after I got him. A couple of months after I brought Fred home the person who taught me how to care for Fred was shocked at how nice Fred looked and acted. Fred would hang out with me all the time. My grandkids loves him. I've shared a few of Fred's videos on my channel. I haven't done any videos in a long time. But, the person who showed me how to take care of him was blown away by the habitat. My youngest daughter had a water dragon and she called me needing help with it since it was sick and she was tired of it. I know nothing about water dragons. I asked her why it was so thin and wouldn't eat or anything. It's tail was falling off which I assumed was because of metabolic disease. She told me that she didn't want it to begin with and it's not her responsibility to feed it or anything else. Instead she and her husband and kids starved the poor thing. She asked me if I could get it back to good health since I do good with Fred. There's a huge difference between bearded dragons and water dragons. My youngest daughter then asked me to let me know when it's better and she would come back and get it. I let her know point blank that I would not give it back to her because of the starvation and abuse that they put it through. I was ticked. I got ahold of the person I got Fred from since he had experience with all kinds of retiles and he said he would do his best to bring it back to good health. The water dragon died about 5 days later. Another friend wanted a bearded dragon and she thought it would be cheap and she would just get a habitat for it, satrate and some food. I let my friend know that I spent a lot to get ready before I got Fred. Between the UV lights, basking lights, habitat, bowls, calcium, worms, crickets and fresh veggies and more it was over $300 before I even got Fred. She thought it would be under $50 for everything and a baby bearded dragon was on a 1/2 sale at the pet store. If the food isn't dehydrated and when someone has to get fresh veggies and Fred loves eggs there's still a cost for food each month. She decided not to get a bearded dragon because of the cost of taking care of them. I didn't want to scare her away from getting a bearded dragon. I let her know that I would help her learn more about them and help her set up the habitat. Then she can get a bearded dragon. I ended up bringing my Fred to my oldest daughters school where she was a 2nd grade teacher to teach the kids about how to care for bearded dragons a couple of years after I got him. One of the other teachers was wanting to get one for her classroom as a pet. She bought one at a Petsmart and while I was looking at her baby bearded dragon I could tell something was wrong with it. I don't know anything about the health of a bearded dragon. I do know how to tell what the difference between a male and a female is and what a health bearded dragon looks like. But, the teachers bearded dragon had something wrong with it. I asked her if she got it at Petsmart they have a 14 day return policy on pets. I wanted to tell her that I don't think Petsmarts, at least the one by us knows anything about the reptiles. Anyhow, I went with her to Petsmart she got it at and were going on and on trying to cover their butts big time. I let them know in front of other people that was overhearing the conversation that I guess they are OK with selling sick reptiles and pets to people who are trying to learn more about them. And that the teacher holding the bearded dragon was a 1st grade teacher and she got it for a classroom pet. So, it was OK for the sales person to sell her a sick bearded dragon, that was a female after I looked under the tail, which she thought was a male. Anyhow, when I told them that the teacher bought it as a classroom pet for 1st graders that would be handling it and taking care of it isn't OK for kids and those who don't know anything about reptiles to handle it. Since the bearded dragon was lunging at me and the teacher. I couldn't help but wonder if it was teased or abused by someone else before she bought it. It looked like it was around 6-8 weeks old before she got it. The little bearded dragon was sick and I'm guessing in pain was attacking the kids. Petsmart told her that they would exchange the bearded dragon and I let the teacher know to get a refund and I would take her to the person I got Fred from where the reptiles are healthy and vet checked. The place I got Fred at actually donated a bearded dragon to the teachers class and would talk to the students about taking care of reptiles. I'm sure it is good for his business as well. I'm going to get a couple of Gecko's eventually. I'm just deciding which kind I want first.

I rescued a Leo that was surrendered at my local Reptile Shop. The owner gave her for free, because he thought she wouldnt make it and didn't want to invest the vet bills. She weighed 19 Grams and had an injury on her face from cohabbing, also a Kink in the tailtip. After 6 weeks of caring and a few vet visits, she Made it and I have her for 2 years now. She is great, easy to handle and quite silly. I Love her so much. ❤

Leopard geckos are my favorite. When my boyfriend's passed away it was just awful... she was his world and still had a lot of life left, but all the exotic vets were away to a conference for two weeks....i still cry about how unfair it all was. You guys should re do a lot of your care guides! It’d be a great series and then you can set QR codes in the zoo for the videos, or print them out and give one with each of the adoptions/purchases so they have a go to source for information. It would also be a good place for the new folk to ask questions about certain species that the more knowledgeable fans can help answer in the comments. Kinda like creating a forum on a video. You can maybe even do a Q&A community tab with questions people have about reptiles and you can answer those in their specific care guides

Props to you for being compassionate to everyone you meet, not just those who you can relate or resonate with. It helps us all meet a middle ground when we don't alienate experiences we dont know enough to speak on or judge, negativity hurts us all. I volunteer at a reptile rescue and we got a bunch in like this from a hording and abandonment case earlier this year. The lady abandoned them in the middle of a strong snowstorm with no power. They survived off of hand warmers for three days before the owner of the rescue could get in there. In particular we got a bunch of Leo's in the same condition as Tardis. But the worst part was how the rescue owner found deceased, mummified reptiles just... stashed all over the garage. Apparently, the lady just set them out or put them between things when they died. We lost just a few that were too far gone, but everyone else is doing really well. One Leo is a blind white one that looks exactly like tardis that I love very much

Unfortunately I can kind of see where the SOME cases like these are coming from. I have 3 leopards myself and during covid I was extremely depressed from first losing my job and then my mom and grandma to the virus. I don't think I got out of bed or showered for months. I feel so bad about neglecting my geckos because of this, but I am thankful that I finally snapped out of it and now do everything I can to give my three boys the fat happy life they deserve.

I didn't realize you could microchip reptiles, that's cool! If I ever get reptiles I have to keep that in mind. Any mammal I get is microchipped as soon as possible, there's astronomically higher chance of reunification if something happens.

On the one hand, I’m absolutely overjoyed seeing these poor fellows bounce back the way they have! You do incredible work, and I’m so happy they all have good, loving homes now! On the other hand… man, those before shots are /depressing/. Will definitely be feeding my leo Pebble an extra hornworm tonight. The thought of any animal being so close to death’s door is awful, but it hits especially close to home when you have that same type of animal - I’ll probably have nightmares about finding my lad that thin for the next few weeks, aha.

Seeing those poor loves so skinny broke my heart. I volunteer for an exotics animal rescue in the UK and we've seen our fair share of skinny and poorly reptiles too. One of our more recent being an iguana; who thankfully made a full recovery and went to a new forever home. Also recently adopted my first leopard gecko, who is a rescue. Alongside my birds, I can't imagine letting them get that skinny and malnourished. Thank you for all you guys do. I had a white leopard gecko just like him that I had to give up and I was absolutely terrified at the thought of that being my lil casper. The coloring honestly looked way too similar and he was as lively as this one that I had to do a double take. I'm glad this lil guy was able to make such a big come back!

I'm here early, but that thumbnail is so distressing. Bless you for helping those little babies. I have a leopard gecko who I rescued from a crazy old hoarder lady who didn't take care of her animals. Two bearded dragons we rescued from her passed away from the long-term neglect. But we saved the little leopard gecko and a uromastyx lizard that we named Rubbish and Riff-Raff. I love them to bits. They look like completely different animals now. So much healthier and happier.

When I saw Tardis at the beginning my heart SANK. When you know what a healthy leopard gecko looks like, that is SO sad to see. It made me feel so much better to see how quickly they all were able to pull themselves out to a better body condition. So glad they all got a second chance

you and ed are absolute angels, and are great advocates for exotic pets and don't treat them as commodities, but treat them with respect. if all exotic pet owners were like emily and ed, this world would be better for it. even tho I love and adore these animals, I don't know enough about them to be a pet owner, but I support people and companies like snake discovery who have the knowledge to support these poor animals.

My leopard gecko was a very tiny skinny 5 grams when I got her. It took a good month for me to get her to eat anything and even longer for her to eat constantly for me but 9 years later she is fat and happy. She shows how happy she is with a heart shape spot right by her eye.
