4:20 they actually do simulate the movement of real rudder pedals. Not of planes but of helicopters like the Huey.

Good review. Could be pointed that VKB T-Link software allow emulate "differential brakes" for any plane, in any sim: In T-Link set a button in stick or throttle for brake both wheels, move rudder for brake right or left wheel only - like RL Spitfire/MiG-15/21 brakes. An welcome compromise solution for the price/quality of this rudder.

Some small planes actually have a rudder pedals working like this. I know about that kind of pedals on Polish motorgliders: J5 Marco and J6 Fregata (both also had a sidestick! ) :D

Very well done review on these pedals. I've had these for almost a year now and they feel just like they did on day one. In DCS I use a shift key and button on my stick for toe breaks. And like you said it's not a big deal whatsoever and save's you $100 compared to it's closest competitor. One of the best purchases I've ever made. Ugunnah8this

Good review! Concise, crisp, gets to the meat. I like this kind of rudder bar movement. Here are the advantages: - Precision. The combination of planted heels and the paddling action of the feet permits very controlled input. Scissoring or pushing the entire lower legs comes nowhere close. - Stays put. Planted feet and vertical action does not shove the unit across the floor. Back in '94 I built a rudder I'm still using today; you could probably drive a small car over it. It's based around a 3/4" steel shaft in a ball bearing arbor (like you can find connected via pully to a 1/4 HP motor on a workbench.) The foot bar is 3/4" plywood with widely spaced cutouts for the feet. To reduce the rotational angle, a zero-backlash 3:1 gear turns the 60 degree potentiometer with a +-10 degree input. Two stout springs provide nice resistance and astoundingly repeatable centering. Feet remain planted, and high precision inputs make it so nice to use. The USB interface is taken from a more recently purchased CH Products rudder I tried and hated, then took apart for the useful bits. ;) This then works well with my CH stick and throttle. The former toe brake component was converted into a trim box attached to the throttle. In this respect am I in agreement with you; one can live without toe brakes on the rudder! Cheers! It's hard to agree to that statement, but I'd say it heavily depends on what you're going to fly. Good luck taxiing and keeping a warbird in DCS straight without toe brakes, unless you're sitting in a model that has the lever on the stick with differential brakes (like the Spit). Having the granular input range of toebrakes there makes the difference. Same in Il-2 GB series. Someone who's savvy enough can try creating virtual input devices with remaps (like stick left/right in combination with a certain button) to actuate the toe brakes within the sim. One plus point goes to these pedals though: by the looks of it, you'll have your heels resting almost as low as if there were just on the floor, that certainly is more comfortable than putting them noticably higher on other pedals. From my own experience, flying with the Crosswinds literally is a pain in the a** after a while, but I guess that also comes from the chair I'm in which could be better XD

Best review of the review! I am not a pilot, I was already thinking of using the pinky lever-thing to break, the system seems to be also very good, as I am using an office chair, and can already see myself spinning in my chair while trying to spin my bird if I were to use standard mechanism :D

the box exists so only one cable goes to the peddle and also the cables are easily reaplce if damaged the box takes one of the wear and tear limitations away from the main unit as replacing the box is cheaper than replacing the pedals IF you need to ask for warrenty info and or replacement parts. one would also assume 3rd party can utilize this box for other products

@@gnomisa lol, I think I was the exact opposite of you. I started with the ch pro pedals and when I was ready to upgrade I was lucky enough to have a buddy of mine who had bought both the crosswinds and Vkb's so we switched back and forth for two weeks. All said and done he is a Helo pilot IRL and DCS. I love the fast movers but we both had chosen the Vkb's. My reasoning was that I loved the up and down action and they didnt slide across my floor when in use. And I use a button for toe brakes and that works great for F-18's to my p-51D. With all that said the crosswinds are undoubtedly a peice of art in themselves. I just choose to put that extra $100+ elsewhere in my rig. :)

Just found your channel earlier today and I am very impressed with your concise, straight to the point language and style. I really appreciated the depth to which you to reviewed the VKB MCG Pro grip and Gunfighter base. They've proven to be particularly difficult to find solid reviews on, so thanks for that. As for the pedals, I think you sold me on these haha. I had the entry level Thrustmaster pedals a while back, and ended up returning them for a full refund. Not only did they feel like a cheap toy (not that I expected much different for what I paid), but the rotational (pendulum?) action disagreed with my instincts. The hinge action on these VKB pedals are exactly what I was hoping to find, and with this kind of build quality at that price point? How could I say no? Thanks again! I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Though I removed the round tube you press down on and went to a fab shop and got some longer ali ones made about at exactly 200% the size of the original size, I highly recommend doing this or even VKB adding this as an option. looks funny but its still very sturdy and unless you are stomping on these you will have no issues. Something I forgot to mention is that I Hang these pedals bolted to the back of my desk upside down and just invert the left and right so right is left and left is right etc, but it makes these pedals feel awesome, it kind of makes them feel like a half pendulum, probably not for most but i find it really enjoyable, that with the extended pegs I have make this really enjoyable, my pegs are thicker just by a little and I enjoy that also

I have to kinda set me foot where I need it then make small adjustments with the ball of my foot. Glad to hear you are an instructor and have some context to your comments. I got the VKB Gladiator NXT. Really nice stick. I'm waiting for my Thrustmaster TWCS Throttle. I've read this is a great setup for a noob. In your opinion, will the flaps on the TWCS suffice for the rudder? I have no idea how to fly, so I'm not sure the controller mapping I'll need. I have X-Plane 11 and DCS so I can assume the mapping will be different by game. There are a fair amount of controls in a plane so, I'm thinking it'll be my preference for what controls I'll need, but I'd appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

I am interested in these pedals, returning to flight sims/games and have never previously used a set of pedals before only a twist action on a stick for rudder control. I like the build quality and overall size of these plus I will be using these in a combination racing/flying rig set up and the up/down pivot motion requiring less space for full operation or travel again for my use seems perfect. I am going to be using a Gladiator NXT flight stick and a TM TWCS throttle with a 3rd party plate/ bearing upgrade to increase the throttles smoothness. My question can't I just use the throttle front rocker switch (which some people use for rudder control) as the toe brake? Or can you assign the throttle twist function to be the brakes if you are using the pedals for the rudder control? I will probably be playing and spending quite a bit of time flying WW2 taildraggers. For the money this really looks like a great kit and offers the quality/ value for the dollar in the range I do not mind venturing into but I do need a decent way to do the brakes as well. Realism is one thing but variances to accommodate playing a game from real life if overall the experience does not greatly suffer is fine by me. Buying a decent performing and good build quality that should offer decent longevity at what I consider a good price point for what is offered by the product also is very important.

If you’re a die hard for immersion I suppose. But in reality using the brake key binds on a keyboard, or even binding them to your stick, got the job done just fine in any fight sim I’ve ever flown. If price is a factor for someone and these pedals are within reach then they shouldn’t let the lack of brakes stop them.

@@Panzerlang Again it comes down to priorities. If someone is looking to make the most of their money, the value proposition is terrific considering the thing you have to compromise on with these pedals is brake fidelity during phases of ground operations that comprise a tiny tiny percentage of your game experience and none of your flying experience. I get it, you consider ground operations to be a very important part of your sim experience. Sorry, but toe brakes are super useful! You need them to maneuver in tiny carrier decks, you need them to steer your plane tighter in general, I've been using them A TON in Microsoft Flight Simulator, having toe brakes to turn in a nice tight circle on that bush strip surrounded by trees is vital. You can "fake" them with another control, but what's the point?

These are my 4th rudder pedal set and the best yet. Well, I have the MFG Crosswind as well, and they're high quality, but because they set your feet much higher they can sometimes be uncomfortable depending on your height and seating position. I find the VKB to be more practical overall. The "normal" strength setting is a bit weak though if you're used to other pedals and you might want to change it to "high" right of the bat.

I very often crank my desk to standing position to play because I hate sitting on my butt all day for work and then for play too, which unfortunately disqualifies me from pedals for the most part. I did try it out with the Thrustmaster pedals, but unfortunately I don't like having to change my control style every time I sit or stand. HOWEVER... if I ever create a full cockpit sim station in the future that is optimized for sitting only while playing (possible when I go full immersion + VR)... I will certainly buy these since I did not like the toe brakes on the Thrustmasters. (returned them already after a week of trying) Once again stellar review. I'm a fan of your down to earth style. Great quick video about this very interesting rudder thanks :) About the toe brakes, im just a normal flight sim pilot in DCS world. For some aircraft, mostly modern jets, it won't be a matter for taxiing, just a mater of imertion and precision. But for mostly warbirds, not having left/right toe brakes will be a real problem as taxiing is done almost 100% with left/right brakes, also the aligmnement on the runway, and landing.

Look, I get what you're saying, but these peripherals aren't exclusive to pure realism. When it comes to space sims(Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen, and the like), every control axis/button/switch counts. Several of the rudder pedals with toe breaks are cheaper than this, with 3x the control axis options. Granted, those are the plastic options(such as the t16000 rudder pedals), but most buying components like this aren't children that will be jumping up and down on it. Plastic is fine, as long as it works and helps if it cuts the cost down.

I think you're underestimating the strength of your legs and overestimating the fine motor control we have over them, particularly when in a heated activity like combat or landing on a carrier etc. Sensor quality, and durability are not realism traits they directly impact your gameplay and the value of your peripheral (how long you can use it before requiring repair/replacement per the cost). Just being plastic is not what makes it less durable, necessarily, it is the overall build quality of the device. It is certainly ideal to have a 3-axis pedal but if you are trying to decide which axis to prioritize buying, I would place the 'toe brake' axis at the bottom well behind flight sticks (x+y), twists (z), and throttles (plus all the axis you get from sticks and throttles that have thumb sticks included. But if you are that person that can get precision and longevity out of the less expensive pedals then you are fortunate, and I encourage you to keep using them!

Not heel brake requirement? Or a hand brake on your stick? We’re talkin video games here so the obvious answer is tape an xbox controller to each pedal so you can get to the brake button. If your computer came with a keyboard you could also use the button bound for brakes in the game you fly.

Nice vid. Yep. These are the ones I want. Can you only get these through China? VKB US is a distributor and gets them directly from China. I've ordered from China and I didn't get... 1. Receipt of payment. 2. Order status. 3. Shipping info. I'm not in a hurry but I like to track my orders. Anyone order them lately? Thanks

Good review, as usual. I don't know how you don't have more subs. You should just do random reviews of stuff... something more broad. You've got the voice. Not saying you're a bad looking dude... just saying... people will come for the thumbnail and stay for the voice. Also, if you download the software, you can add in a braking feature. Not sure HOW it works, but there is a way to add braking to them thru software.

Yeah those are antitorque pedals. Slowing down the aircraft is kind of important.

These pedals make way more sense in Star Citizen with it's 6DOF flight model. Much like Heli rudder pedals.

I just recently bought the thrustmaster TFRP rudders... And as a Star citizen Player i must say: i love to have toe breaks on them!... It just feels more natural to move a ground vehicle with "gas pedals" and when jumping into a ship switch to a different kind of axis on the fly without switching the hardware. Awesome! But for DCS i only use the normal axis..

Hello, Yes VKB a great company, have two of their joysticks. Question: you talk about toe brakes, would this be an issue say with WW2 aircraft where you absolutely need braking right and left when taxiing? Thanks!

So these vs the Crosswinds, the only difference is the toe brake? Oh, just a thought, one other thing you could have included in your review is their functional width. I'm researching pedals at the moment as I'll be buying a set after I get TrackIR, and I see some people concerned with width, and the pedals not feeling too narrow as some do. I'm a bigger guy, 6'1" (or 1.85m), with big feet (Size 13), I'm thinking this concern for width may apply to me. I know MFD offers a spacer to allow you a few more inches of width in their pedals. Do these look like I could make my own if I feel the need? Thanks for the review, I was very curious about these, as you said, they are the lowest priced of the premium gear. In my mind the Viper and the Thrustmaster are too much money for too little effect, regardless of their superior fidelity. Pedals add too little to your gaming experience to spend several hundred more dollars for a brand that is simply more accurate to the model it's emulating. I'd rather spend that extra money in a stick or throttle. So the question in my mind are these vs the Crosswinds.

@@jessecalder First thanks for the reply. Are your feet a good width apart? I think that's the common complaint with some of the cheaper solutions (besides the plastic as you mentioned)
