Your segments on guards are possibly the only ones that actually explain the guard from the point of view of someone trying to learn *the guard*, rather than learn one or even a compilation of moves - i.e. how to enter it and how to maintain it above all. I've known half a dozen attacks from the double sleeve guard for a long time, but was never able to make them work until now that I'm starting to understand how to actually enter into it without being immediately passed, and I could have probably done that much earlier If i watched this. And btw I totally agree on the definition, I actually play most of the time with feet on hips and mostly use the lasso to defend passes or get into the guard, and feet on biceps only when they sit down to rest with the weight back so that I can't load them

Your videos are really good and informative. Nice to have a youtube instructional channel where the quality isn't awful and you can't hear anything anyone is saying, this is quality.

Who the fuck is this angel? He literally addresses EVERY issue I have in each of his videos. Every school teaches spider techniques and no entries, teach only as spider guard instead of double sleeve, etc. May the jiu jitsu gods bless you and this channel sir

Hi, Jon. If you have time, could you post something about preventing folks trowing your spider leg by when you are playing "Lo Guard" (hybrid of a loose DLR hook with a pant grip and a spider guard). If I don't move to Spider & One Lex X hybrid from there in a hurry, I get my spider leg thrown by. Thank you)

Great stuff! When you make the video dealing with counters can you please address what you like to do when guys step back and force your feet to the floor to break the spider hooks off. I'm guessing transition to another guard but that is by far what happens to me the most.
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 6 жыл бұрын
ddaley814 I meant to address that in this video, just slipped my mind. I’ll probably do a video on just controlling spider. Short answer turn your feet really wide over their biceps so that when they push down your feet act as hooks on their arm. If they are standing you are much better off keeping your knees close to your body in my opinion.

I’m a shorter, stockier purple belt. Is it worth my time to focus on spider or DLR or would I be better focusing on a different Guard? What would u recommend? My open Guard game is my weakest by far. Thanks. Great channel!

T C Absolutely you can play spider guard and DLR guard. Otavio Sousa and Cobrinha were both huge influences on my game, they both have a shorter stocky build. My recommendation is learn to play all guard types just for the sake of learning them, then you can choose later on which one works best for you. I suggested working on one type for a month or two, then switching up after a while you will have a pretty wide range of options.

Would you recommend trying any of this nogi? I know some people play nogi spider with the weak ass grips but should I just use this for my gi game and try and develop a different “attacking” guard for nogi? If so what guard do you recommend? Subbing this channel and sharing on my teams page
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 6 жыл бұрын
MattfknKonen I don’t think spider will work well no gi. I theory if you had the grip strength of The Mountain maybe you could pull it off then it would be bad ass, but for normal humans I think the guys would break your grips pretty easy. That being said I do think the concepts of centering your hip and how to maintain an open guard position you learn from playing it out still useful. I even use the feet in bicep when people control my ankles, to help recompose, but you can’t really attach to them like you do with the sleeves.
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 6 жыл бұрын
MattfknKonen For no-gi I think strong recomposing is a must as always. The guards most used I see are sit up butterfly like Marcelo Garcia, X Guard, 5050, or the leg reap Single leg x positions are great for subs or sweeps, also reverse dlr/knee shield stuff. Perhaps underhook dlr as well. Also don’t forget closed guard

Great man, I already have a small base in x guard and knee shield so I’ll keep expanding on those for my nogi game. Also really find your recomposing notes very helpful, thank you
