Man I’ve Ben picking up a lot of spider guard techniques from you and they have made a world of difference. I’m a 3 stripped white belt and I even got blue belts having a lot of trouble with my spider guard ! Love this channel. I like how you make it simple to understand and how effective the techniques are

Great videos! Love the emphasis on only showing things that would work in a live competition setting at full intensity. It's always really frustrating to find techniques online that only work in a dead fish drilling situation
@mavzolej3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the same technique explained by a highly competitive black belt gives a very different feeling from some abstract theory.

Thanks for this, there is a brown belt at my gym with a really solid spider guard game. I will defo try this out next time I roll.

A couple of days ago I (as a 1-stripe white belt) got caught in a purple belt's spider guard for what seemed like eternity (which I realize was probably only 45 seconds), and later when I asked him what the right thing to do to counter it was, his answer was "just keep showing up to class", which really rubbed me the wrong way. I already know consistency is key -- that's why I've been there every M/Th without fail for the last 10 months. So anyway -- I'm definitely looking forward to trying this the next time I'm stuck in somebody's spider guard, and especially if it's his. As always, thanks for the amazing advice!

I'm old and slow so I use a lot of pressure passing. But, Spider Guard has been giving me lots of problems during our rolling sessions. So, I'm going to use your technique. Plus, I love Kesa Gatame, so that's an added bonus. Thanks.

I started doing this instinctively out of necessity…especially with bigger guys… I can use the leg to slide down to the hip. It works great!!

Great video,I get sweeped more times than a Barbers floor from the spider guard (one stripe white belt here) and need this for my repertoire (pride 😉) 🖐️👊👍

Thanks. I usually just back out until they can’t connect and disarm one side and then pressure pass until I get around it.

Excellent coach. There are some guys at my gym who are so good at this guard that I can’t even get my passing game started(forcing 1/2 guard. I’m 56). They entangle me n before you know it I’m fighting off a triangle/omoplata(which they are also good at). Is there a strategy you can give me to avoid spider/lasso altogether?

Love your channel! Interested what approach you'd take if they have double sleeve control but with both feet on the hips like a balloon sweep position. It's especially a problem for me standing up from my opponents closed guard.

@Jonthomasbjj I am using spider guard a lot and the guys in my gym have started to go my limp arm, basically rendering spider guard useless. Do you have any advice to combat this or just abandon spider and go to another guard?
@mrgees100peas4 жыл бұрын
I tried it on multiple days but I can't quite make it work. The problem is the circling part. If I manage to circle to the side then yes, the technique works as advertised. However, every time I try to circle to the side they just circle too so that they are always in front of me. How do you fix that? Thats the last pieve of the puzzle I need.
@kylieminou77755 жыл бұрын
When you walk to the side, person on the bottom will stretch their leg (and your arm), not break the grip.
@JonThomasBJJ5 жыл бұрын
Well competition footage and experience says they will often break the grip.
@history30426 жыл бұрын
Whenever I try this the guy wont disengage his outer leg and will usually end up in me circling behind his head
@TheAsCOTthursday6 жыл бұрын
Hi, if the opponent decides to release the grip on the sleeves and go for your legs(your legs should be quite close to them using this technique), how do you react to it?
@ivanx76 жыл бұрын
What if they stretch you out by kicking your biceps hard? Usually when people spider me im always getting stretched. Does stepping on the leg and pull work?
@JonThomasBJJ6 жыл бұрын
ivanx7 It works the same if they extend their leg out hard on your bicep. The stomp on leg will work as well, but can be countered if guy on bottom knows how to defend it. I do like the stomp as well though. Also I think this pass ends you in better passing position. The stomp more breaks the position than passes, most of the time.
@ArielTabak6 жыл бұрын
I find with really big and long guys it’s hard to hit this one when the leg is fully extended.. I end up using my hips to extend into their knee.. which isn’t the twisting one though that this guy shows
@JonThomasBJJ6 жыл бұрын
If their leg is extended completely that is when the twist is necessary. If it’s really hard to get the hook off you can sometimes drop while you twist to make the hook slide off. You won’t always get fully pass the guard with this throw sometimes they recompose, but if you twist properly I have never not been able to get the leg off the bicep which at least makes them frame to defend and breaks the position and you can repass after. In my opinion using your hip to try to pop the spider hook off is not effective vs a good spider guard, it’s too easy for me to recenter my hip as you posture. Sorry to be critical of your suggestion, but it was one of the main points of my video and trying to be honest with advice for guys passing spider I strongly recommend against it. It’s in my opinion one of the most common mistakes trying to pass the spider. If it always works for you keep using it, if you eventually do come across the spider guard you can’t do it on then you can always go back and try the twist method. I can make a short follow up video on this specific point for you guys, these details are practically impossible to address in text lol

nao funciona, no momento que voce tentar passar a guarda dele ele faz recomposicao cruzada e comeca tudo de novo.. talvez com um faixa branca, ou azul ate vai, acima disso eh praticamente impossivel.

Jose Pagan Hey the pass is actually basically the same, just loop your hand out. Then look to throw after. In this match vs Romulo you can see Leandro lo use it a couple times in first 3 or 4 minutes. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoDUo4ePna-qbMU

I tried this technique during sparring session against a black belt and he let go of his right grip and was able to unbalance with his left foot on the bicep. What do you do against this technique? To be more accurate his defense looked like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gonMfnqYeN90mdE Great technique anyway: I particularly like the drop to kesa-gatame because it counters the move when he seats to recompose which is very annoying.
@JonThomasBJJ6 жыл бұрын
Crusty The dog Hey, in the link you sent Liera is playing the Romulo guard which is a completely different control because of the lapel grip. The pass I showed will not work vs that position. Not sure if the guy you were fighting was on double sleeve or Romulo guard? The way you described it if the guy let’s go of one sleeve then he is left with only one spider hook in that situation with no other grip he should not be able to off balance you and you can throw him. It’s hard answering questions through text like this though. If you would like you can film your self in the situation and link the video and I will respond to it. Hope that helps

Doesn't look any good to me. So much easier to use your foot on the opponents hamstring and push/kick it to break the grip.
@JonThomasBJJ6 жыл бұрын
Paul Rickett That’s a good one too but doesn’t get you into a strong pass position. It’s also pretty easy to defend on bottom in my experience.
@guilhermeborges11615 ай бұрын
What a weak spider guard he made, he didn't even stretch his leg, he broke the grip very easily, so anyone can pass
