So when you are doing this test, do you have the wheels suspended off the ground or is this something you are simply grabbing the axle shaft and moving while the wheels are on the ground?

YES on the ground. I'm moving the front drive shaft outer CV tulip, which axle is a part of. Axle runs through spindle of steering knuckle. The amount I moved tulip in and out, is in relation to the hub flange snap ring gap. Snap ring is hanging in the outer tip of axle in a groove. Snap ring pounds the axle groove out and the hub flange face in. If gap not kept within 100 series spec of: less than 0.20mm snap ring gap at hub flange, axle move in & out excessively. If gap was set to spec, you'd be hard pressed to see the less than 0.20mm in & out.
