Let me just burst everyone’s bubble. I was a young girl and teenager who was very slender naturally due to a series of growth spurts. Think kpop very skinny. I got so many comments. I have zero desire to be like that physically again though. I was almost always cold and uncomfortable on a physical level and wanting to crawl under a pile of blankets. To be physically comfortable you need a decent muscle and fat percentage on your body. Do not long to be uncomfortable and cold. Also, being too skinny strips your body of curves and you look more childlike usually. So ick.
@AuriBot69
@AuriBot69 Ай бұрын
@@LotusesGalaxyOcean I'm with you on this after recovering from an eating disorder, but I'll burst your bubble: most people who want to be skinny truly do not care about the negative side effects. They hear "you'll be freezing all the time" and "you'll be uncomfortable all the time" and think "ok.... and??". You tell them that if they reach the weight they're dreaming of they'll likely lose a bunch of hair and be tired all the time and all they hear is "blah blah blah skinny blah blah blah". The desire to be tiny at all costs will never ever leave society, which sucks bad to say the least.

@@AuriBot69 Sadly, you are right and what I said will not deter some people. I know. I just hope to give some people who are not as far down the rabbit hole a reason to stop glamorizing this idea. @@bear.b This isn't true. For reasons I'm not getting into here, I've never done weight training and barely even do yoga and pilates anymore these days even though ideally I'd love to do all 3 regularly. I don't actually know why my arms and shoulders are so defined considering this, and it's something I've always felt weird about because most of body doesn't show visible muscle like that. So maybe it's rare, but it seems like something that can just happen to some people who are overall on the thinner side - just the way certain people's fat and muscle distributes

Yes, studying nutrition and proportions as a contrast is healthy habits. But, weird trendy food and eating is nonsense. As an example many people do not get enough: iron, magnesium, omega threes, vitamin c, healthy fats, fruit and vegetables. They eat them occasionally but, not consistently in the amounts needed. Finding delicious recipes that you will consistently eat for these nutrients is pivotal to your health.

100%. The problem is that a lot of the fads in diet culture at the moment are healthy - when in proportion. Eating healthy is one thing - but are people eating enough? Do they feel guilty about eating sweets, even in moderation? Exercise is healthy - but too much exercise can be bad for a social life (depending on what you do) or be an accessory to anorexia

@@victoriabyers5161 I agree with you 100% about your point about a period tracking app that isn't heteronormative and ESPECIALLY isn't centered around pregnancy planning. The ones I've found who seem to be just what I seek are incredibly bad privacy wise and share your data with gooood only knows who, so I'm happy that I'm computer savvy in that way so I can check up what information apps are sharing with third parties and what data they save for themselves and use to do other shitty stuff with. I have, to this day, not found one single period app that I would trust with all the data it wants me to give. I found one, but that one cost more than I'm willing to pay and it was centered around pregnancy. So I'm just doing it the old fashioned way, trying to keep some kind of counting going in my mind, but it's tricky since my period has always been very irregular. Well well, I hope some app comes out one day that isn't hellbent on selling all the data it collects and just does what it's supposed to. But I'm not that confident it will happen.

As someone who’s been going to pilates twice a week for almost two years, there’s two types of pilates. There’s high asethic vibe. Places like Frame (London based studios), where it’s very much no pain no gain vibes, and then there’s the studios where it’s no frills, it’s about rehabilitation. I currently live in Madrid and I go to a studio where it’s predominately middle aged people and people with recovering injuries and I love it. There was a studio that I went to that was super instagrammable, gorgeous windows, boutique style but the other people there just took selfies because the studio was cute, they’d often turn up late and didn’t care about doing the moves correctly. The studio with older people who are not online, we all say hi to each other, we’re wearing decathlon work out wear, and talking about how hard the moves are. Funny thing is, the teacher I have teaches at both studios, but the no frills one is €10 cheaper.

I had lost a lot of weight and muscle mass due to chronic illness and depression and I just couldn’t push my body through something like running. I bought a couple of cute workout sets and went to the local YMCA. The pilates instructor was a super nice older woman and always shows modifications to accommodate everyone’s ability. Even though it’s currently trendy on tiktok so most videos are of young people, the majority of the class was women above middle age. It was hard but it helped me safely build strength back. Mat pilates was free with membership although reformer was $25 a class once a week. Much more affordable than the other pilates studio but still expensive. Also I’m fairly privileged financially and live in a wealthy, white suburb so it’s much easier for me to access pilates classes.

If she gets overwhelmed on stage her back ups take over and she has a break. So whatever she does to get to where she is is because she has worked so hard. She has done what she can. Where I went for classes, it’s actually less younger people who attend but older men and women as it was connected to a physiotherapy office. My health insurance even covered the cost! Edit: also to discuss my experience with diet culture and medical professionals- I have had a starvation (an all soup and an under 1000kcal) diet pushed on me by an endocrinologist. I’ve also had ozempic pushed on me to lose 20-25lbs without any discussion surrounding normal diet, lifestyle or other potential health issues. It’s genuinely insane how pervasive it is across society and among people who should know better.

I am a Community Health Worker II and I find it bizarre how the word wellness was co-opted. We began using it in the marginalized health sphere as the original goal of health in traditional Western medicine was “optimal health.” Optimal health is not accessible and is inherently ableist. “Wellness” was intended to be a harm reduction term, largely accepted by the behavioral and mental health industry because it encouraged the importance of viewing health beyond the scope of physical wellness. But also that the pursuit of wellness was on going and personal- each person’s journey is their own- not intended to be compared to another’s. So the fact elitism has co-opted and made it a consumer capitalist venture doesn’t surprise me…but does make me sad. 😢

I love exercising and I try to do it more often but it seriously bothers me the the goal is always to look good! Exercising is useful for all kinds of everyday movements like picking up and carrying things or maintaining better posture hence less back pain, and being stronger or building endurance are some examples for goals that aren't related to looks. And yet a lot of fitness influencers assume your goal is to look good, like... I'd just like to be able to catch my bus or run up the stairs without running out of breath, thank you.

I hate how capitalistic fitness & wellness has become... I've gotten super into going to the gym this year & I'm trying to get stronger & build muscle. I've been lucky in the fact I have people around me who are well educated in exercise science & helped me make progress, but I've seen so much misinformation on social media telling women false promises about how to get a dream body, tons of useless products & supplements that don't help at all, & fad diets. The reality is I'm now actually eating more than I ever have before because I'm so active, & there's no quick fix to get a certain body, it's about educating yourself, staying consistent, & overall developing healthy habits, but social media wants to sell people falsehoods for profit

Thinking of exercise as something that can help you do basic stuff with more ease instead of making it about looks or weight or beauty makes it 100 percent easier to start exercising in a realistic way that actually benefits your health. We need to rethink "health" as a word because people literally use that neutral word to shame bigger bodies (I swear to god if I get any replies saying "But being fat is unhealthy so it's not wrong to say someone is unhealthy" 🫠 plenty of fat people are healthier than half of the skinny people and have muscle and eat normally like everyone else. Also the amount of fat people who experience discrimination in the healthcare system because of how they look is enough to say "screw you" to anything that saying fatness = unhealthy)

I hate when people acclaim a form of exercise to be 100% responsible for their appearance - genetics, fat distribution, caloric intake, and much more is responsible for the way your body looks. Pilates is not the end all be all for a lean physique - if you do pilates for a month and eat like shit, you're not going to look like Miley Cyrus. Trying to look like her would be by losing body fat and building muscle and even then you probably still won't look anywhere near her because your structure would be different. People also forget that these are celebrities which know they have a big day coming up in which they will be photographed and filmed from each and every angle and that they will be shown everywhere. They prepare for these events and photoshoots for weeks prior to look their best - facials, masages, hair removal, hair extensions, outfit fittings, and who knows what else. There's a few videos of Beyoncé behind the scenes of commercials where she says how all she's had was green juice for a week prior. While it's most likely an exaggeration, it probably isn't far of from the truth considering her rigorous and unhealthy diet she was on for Coachella. Even though due to body positivity celebrities aren't as open about their diets and food habits as they were 10+ years ago, they still do it. They are still expected to look exceptionally well at the red carpet so they are probably still doing stuff similar to how body builders cut and dehydrate before getting on a stage.

Totally get how annoying it is they’re all cramming it down our throats, but genuinely Pilates is a fantastic way to care for your body. Lets just remember the problem is with social media… not Pilates. Just want to protect Pilates for a sec... Pilates works core strength in particular and let me tell me you, if you’ve ever given birth… you will realise how important your core strength is, the kinetic chain falls apart when you have a weak core which leads to further problems. One small example of this is the pandemic of anterior pelvic tilt - which will cause pain to the lower back, knees and can worsen the effects of pronation of the feet. Working the core can help to ameliorate this. Physiotherapists are big fans of Pilates because of the focus on core strength, stabilisation and alignment. It is also a weight bearing exercise which is good for bone density, which is especially important for women as we age as I bone density drops and any fractures sustained are harder to fixate and longer to heal. Yes it may be fashionable but it is undoubtedly a very effective exercise to maintain the bodies that we are so very lucky to have! And as someone who works in healthcare alongside doctors and physios to rehab a range of both young and old people, I can certainly say that those people who have made an effort to maintain and fortify their bodies always manage better with less distress than those who have never exercised, regardless of if they are slimmer or larger. Not to mention it has been life changing for my mum and dad who are in their 70s and only started pilates a couple of years ago.

I'm a former Pilates instructor. It's a great form of exercise, but it won't change the basic shape of your body. Clients used to come in expecting to grow 6 inches and look like a prima ballerina. Yes, sometimes a client may "gain" an inch of height, but that's because they've gotten rid of spinal compression and are standing taller. Joseph Pilates developed what has become Reformer Pilates as a series of exercises using weights and pulleys attached to a hospital bed. He was a P.O.W during WWI and wanted to help other prisoners become stronger so they could survive Typhoid. And he called it Contrology. I completely agree that Pilates has become trendy. Which is really too bad, because it's very effective for spinal health and mobility.

The thing about the wellness industry that completely drives me insane is that it is built off of profiting of other cultures. Throughout history, a plethora of middle-eastern and indian cultures have developed and practiced ayurveda, yoga etc. This industry has been co-opting these practices and then sanitising it so it is more easily digestible to its largely caucasion consumer base all while convincing the people of colour who have interest in partaking in these aesthetics (such as the clean girl) that they simply are too 'ethnic' to engage in practices that require a higher level of spirituality or being.

Take any claim you see as a joke, and understand that the only legit strategy to learn about nutrition is from people who aren't selling you anything other than professional medical services. Use neutral medical websites, not social media to learn these basic things. They aren't as hard or heart crushing as you have been trained to think.

it's not lost on me that the pilates aesthetic is NOT culturally diverse... there's only one skin tone I'm seeing represented in it, which adds to POC's experiences with how out-of-reach these body ideals are.

But it's not on purpose? Pilates was created by a European guy and popularised by white women, but what is actually stopping you from going into it?

thank you for this, very well thought through and expresses a lot of what I’ve been thinking about lately when considering my own thoughts on my body. definitely a tendency to want to see yourself as outside of or immune to something, and i like how you include yourself in these things not distance from them. excellent video, really appreciate it ❤

every single video you've released since I subscribed has been so interesting and clearly so well researched, and I always find them so engaging even if the topic isn't necessarily something I would look for on my own! hope you're having a great day and thanks for making such brilliant videos 😊

I used to follow these KZbin workouts and the algorithms started suggesting anti-fat content. Not like "oh. Let's talk about health" no. It was: let's mock all these fat cows!!! It was strange... Happens every time i watch one of those videos.

Another great informative and entertaining video! I go to pilates classes and I love how it is not like on social media at all. People of different sizes, and ages show up in their messy buns and sweatpant and we all struggle and sweat together lol

Thank you for this. What a well put together video! I really think there needs to be a way to control what the algorithm shows us. I click on one cooking video and then I get a million “what I eat in a day in a calorie deficit” videos, workout videos, weight loss videos, etc. I feel like it’s super damaging to have this force fed to us constantly.

I love your videos about diet culture. It’s such a pervasive thing and watching these videos helps me recognize and break away from the thin, white, able bodied ideal that’s constantly being shoved down our throats. You have such an intelligent and fun perspective and I look forward to your next upload!
