TEAM SGG PATREON / somegadgetguy We're getting a little sneak peak at Qualcomm's new PC chip! The Snapdragon X Elite looks ready to usher in a new era for portable Windows computing. Before all the laptop manufacturers start releasing new systems based on this chip, Qualcomm hosted a small reviewer meet up to get some hands on time and see some tests in action!

You can expect about the same like Android (it's more demanding like iOS, 8 cores sip more power like 6 cores, 12GB RAM also require more power to maintain like 6GB etc..), so to reach the same battery life they need a bigger battery (just because they already need 12 power core to compete the 8 power cores, im not talking about basic M2 or M3 with just 4 power cores, im talking about M2 Pro for example, they didn't even showed a comparison against the M2 Max which still only has 10 power cores, still less like the 12 power cores in X Elite, and the 4 efficiency cores in any M chip are not equal with even just 1 power core in performance.. so it's already more demanding. Also the diff between 23W and 80W power consumption is not looks good.. you only gain 10% extra performance for 250% more power consumption?

It looks like Qualcomm will probably be able to deliver a decent experience for Windows ultra thin and light laptops. For a laptop I'd take with me on a trip, all I want is all-day battery life with pretty decent performance. The biggest barrier is just that so few apps are compiled for ARM natively and rely on x86 emulation (which is slow). For native apps, the perf/W is really good. It kinda blows me away that in Cinebench they have a Qualcomm laptop where the WHOLE SYSTEM is only pulling 24W handily outperforming an Intel system where the CPU by itself has a 28W TDP. Sure, Meteor Lake doesn't have the best perf/W in the x86 space, but it's not leaps and bounds off.
@hugevibez
@hugevibez 6 ай бұрын
I think Windows x86 and x64 emulation is sometimes able to outperform Rosetta2, it's just the chips available in these Windows on Arm laptops were always just not good enough. Details on the exact microarchitecture are sparse atm, but from what I can tell the Oryon cpu core is made by the Nuvia team so I have high hopes. Emulation is inherently slower/less efficient but it doesn't have to be a bad solution if you optimize it well enough (and aren't trying to run Windows on a mobile-optimized processor)
@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy 6 ай бұрын
That's what's got me really anxious. I want to see OEMs get smart with this platform, and support it with good options. When the legacy software conversation is always going to be tough, getting folks to recompile for arm and support it, the Linux side is kind of ridiculous. Using the older 8CX chip, it's like a mediocre Pentium when you're emulating older programs. It's a little screamer tho when you fire up ubuntu INSIDE windows 11. Completely different experience. Now giving this a bit.more horsepower at a similar power draw is only going to improve the issues we've had with emulation.
@strawbaria
@strawbaria 6 ай бұрын
I'm relatively optimistic about the chip - as long as the chip performs better than Intel/AMD then it's already a pretty good baseline to start with, especially for devices which won't be used for too heavy workloads. The fact that Qualcomm already has performance on par with M2 with a "first gen chip" is very promising, though everything is still up in the air regarding driver support and emulation performance and other bugs - especially given the ridiculously ancient suite of Windows apps that exist.

What we also don't know yet is how strictly governed the SOC will be in a fanless machine. Moore's Law is now shifting towards investing in smaller and less energy-consuming chips that cater to casual and intermediate users. I think it's great, especially since we can now perform so much from just a browser. This could potentially become a great alternative to x86 for handheld PCs. I also think it would be interesting to see high-end devices that combine an AMD GPU. Perhaps we could also see a revival of Crossfire with AI integration, where one GPU handles rasterization while the other takes care of AI enhancements such as upscaling.

I've been bullish on the hardware for a while now. From a purely performance standpoint, a Dimensity 9300 is already hanging with 12th gen Core i7 U series, and that's at a peak of 15W and passively cooled. I wonder if they will create Snapdragon motherboards for a desktop PC that you can buy to custom build your PC, but can still upgrade the RAM, Hard Drives and GPU's. Having said that I hope NVIDIA and AMD also put out GPU's that are natively supported on ARM. It would be nice to be able to build my own custom gaming PC with ARM. I also feel they need to retire x86 for x64, but for 4 or 5 years create a compatibility layer to support x86 with instructions they have a certain amount of time to port any x86 to x64 and also bring a new filing system to replace NTFS which has been around since the 90s and it's time to upgrade to a new faster and more efficient system like Apple did with their new APFS.

Even if this is not gonna be immediate revolution, it's good that ARM architecture is finally slowly getting to desktop with Windows, because this needs more users, more testing and more development which can't be done just in labs without feedback from real users. After few years, who knows, maybe it's gonna be the future. We have compatibility with pretty old software and games and that compatibility is more limited by GPU drivers and DirectX support and such things, so even when old soft and games are x86, it still can give errors and bugs on modern hardware. I think it's maybe time to start thiking about some bigger change and don't stupidly insist on compatibility with 20+ years old software and games. I have several retro computers and full boxes with old hardware, I don't need this compatibility on my new computer and when new computer can be more efficient when we drop this x86 compatibility, then maybe we should do it. The same with outdated ATX standard and PCI-e slots which are really not designed for today 3 kg 50 cm long GPUs.

@@SomeGadgetGuy Hopefully but Intel's been making chips for windows a tiny bit longer than Snapdragon and those handful of benchmarks of the X Elite laptops were not done by 3rd party reviewers so saying "Intel Ultra 7 155H performance at under 20W" wouldn't be very wise. X Elite chips might not perform as good in certain tasks, just like it happens with Apple's CPUs. Hence my original comment. If they are at least as good as Apple's CPUs it'd be amazing, or even the Intel CPUs but if not then it wouldn't be bad either cuz of the very low power consuming aspect of the X Elites.

While I'm very much excited for development for Windows on ARM, I hope Windows software developers actually migrate their software to natively support arm64. While modern apps may have existing toolchains that could be easily migrated to ARM, older apps may struggle. It tends to be old proprietary apps that you still need for your particular workflow. But perhaps something like the web versions of these applications (if available) would have to suffice during this transition just when Apple went to Apple Silicon

It's the path i see most likely. There's a ton of old software that just won't make the jump, and that sucks. Battery life is impressive in all - 9 to 10 hours or more. From the MS perspective, I think it's because they aren't trying to step on other partner's toes. The Laptop is a "nice" laptop in a sea of nice laptops, and this won't concern Lenovo/Dell/HP that MS is trying to muscle them out. The Pro becomes the crown jewel product for MS because it represents a different vision for what a Windows portable could be, and there's a lot less competition for that specific idea of a convertible tablet. As to MS's cozy relationship with Intel, that I won't ever really understand, but it's at least somewhat encouraging that they've played with ARM in the past, and that a new SP10 will likely include an X Elite option too.
