Iconoclasm was a real movement that happened in the Byzantine Empire, basically they kept being invaded and the Emperor (which I think was actually Leo III) thought that the empire was being punished by God for worshipping icons and destroyed a lot of art. I haven’t noticed that in the game before but it’s really cool that it is

@@saintjiubtheeradicator The start dates are a ton of work that means they don't work on other mechanics. They are super cool though. I imagine they need a mechanic that would suit that start date perfectly to make it worth the effort. Iconoclasm tends to pop up a bit in a normal game, but unless the emperor converts it can't really go anywhere

@@derekskelton4187 Since Leo III was the one who pushed for the ban of icons, he should have a unique decision at game start for destroying icons. This is why I suggest 726 because this year gives you the most out of the early 700s where most of the interesting things happened. I would most certainly say that this start date would be more important to the Franks as within 6 years they would win at the battle of Tours

ALWAYS TAKE HOSTAGES! Taking a hostage from someone you won a war against is just free prestige and renown. You definitely need prestige in the early game to help snowball and renown is just always good. Its always the best option. NO you don't have to trade hostages! If you win the war select whoever you want and take them. The UI will say you can't and sometimes they can say no, but 95% of the time you can take whoever. Just try to force it. Also it serves as protection from future attack if you are worried about being attacked from powerful enemies. Will having a hostage stop me from declaring war? No! if you want to war with them again return the hostage and one day later declare war. Also you can sometimes scheme your character or your house members into huge Empires by winning over a hostage with a claim on an entire realm. If you get a hook on a hostage, release them then use the hook to bring them into your court and marry them to your hair, family, or yourself. If you didn't get the hook imprison them (This will incur tyranny) and use the recruit option in negotiation. Now you determine who they marry. ALWAYS TAKE HOSTAGES!

If you raise the hostage yourself you can sometimes even get an event to adopt them. They keep all their claims too

The landless but not Adventurer bug is something I experienced and bug reported to Paradox right after RtP was released. There is another side effect about it: at the starting date "play as any Character screen" you can press C for Character Finder and select a Baron as your start. Of course you don't have a Court and that makes the games very challenging...

Tbf “Byzantine” and its pronunciation are based on the previous name of Constantinople (Byzantion) so it’s not like the word was invented after the fall.

I studied the byzantine empire for university this year and the pronounciation you used to do of' By-Zan-Tine' over 'Byz-zan-teen' is both accepted when speaking about them so use whichever you are more comfortable with and this isn't just from one proffesor but 4 different ones :)

If they want you to pronounce it "properly", then use Latin pronunciation, Bee-zan-tee-nay or Greek pronunciation Vee-zan-tee-nos and ruin everyones day, especially if you throw a really thick Greek accent at it.

If you go landless you can get an event that makes conversions absurdly cheap. If you then get the theology perk to cheapen it further you can convert to even the dead faiths for a few hundred piety no exploits or even a lot of rng

I seriously do not get why AI constantly switches to Iconoclasm in 867, as if there are no deciding factors to change the outcome. If you play as Byzantine emperor, you get stressed if you convert to Iconoclasm, in which case the AI should completely avoid it.

Ps5 only has dlcs up to Tours and Tournaments, just like the xbox version. The console versions are behind the pc versions. Thankfully from what I've seen it seems like the new console team are actually decent at their job so console should get this dlc either next year or the year after.

In British English Byzantine is pronounced ByzanTINE while in American its pronounced Byzanteen. If you want to say it the right way just go to google translate, and using Greek type Byzantine in English, and press play. Or another way is to say Roman Empire and forget the Ancient City
