Snare drum falls off during DCI Finals

My snare drum came unhooked during my age-out finals run with Carolina Crown. Huge thank you to the judge Allan Kristensen for saving my performance! I'm guessing it came loose at the last note of the drum feature, and then was barely sitting in the hooks. While moving back field, it slipped out.
I will never forget the feeling it sent through my body as it fell off, and my reaction as I saw it hit the ground in front of me. I thought Max, the quad player was about to trip over it. Luckily he missed it by a hair! My reaction was to keep marching because muscle memory had already taken over, as you can see I brought my sticks up because it was part of muscle memory I suppose. I remember seeing AK pick up my drum, and hearing him yell "Yo!" to my left. He was on my left, and handed it to me in the perfect position for me to grab and hook onto my carrier right before a huge drill move.
This was a memorable age out to say the least.

During the semi finals of our last competition my senior year in HS, I was lead trumpet and had a solo in our third song. Unfortunately for me, a rifle was poorly tossed and caught my horn, bending my lead pipe and collapsing two valves, not to mention giving me a bloody nose. That happened near the end of the second song. Before I broke formation for the solo, I grabbed the trumpet of the kid next to me and gave him mine. Went out and played my solo and just used his horn for the rest of the show. He wasn't happy, but our band director was laughing about it for months because he saw it happen live and had a short panic attack.

So during practice a day before a competition I was playing my new Yamaha xeno ytr8335r and a majorette threw her baton in the air and it went like 10 yards and all I heard was WATCH OUT!!! and it was way to late and it hit right after the valves on the bell and it left 4 dents and one giant dent and I had to march the rest of the season with a giant dent in my horn it was way better than it could have been though it didn’t crack any of the metal it just dented it but my friend had a copper bell trumpet and he dropped it and I completely destroyed the copper bell

This is honestly one of the coolest things ive ever seen in dci. It really shows that that judge understands what this performance meant. He may not have know that you were also aging out but it really is awesome that he understands the work that has been put in and what youve sacrificed to be there doing this. But mostly i think its just cool to see a judge acting like a normal human. Im so used to seeing judges angrily muttering into their microphones. Glaring at you. Making you feel like they want you to mess up. I dont know. That may just be the kinda crappy judges we have where im from. I may be over reacting but whatever. This is just awesome. Congrats on a great season.

I know people who were in the Colts front ensemble, and one of the cymbal arms fell, and a judge put it back. I've seen judges pick up plumes so nobody tripped, DCI judges really understand what it's like to have something like that go wrong at a show, cause their the ones that marched 5 years, then taught for 10, they've had it happen, wether it happened to them, a fellow member, or a student, they understand the feeling.

The top of my 3rd valve on my trumpet (the little cap/button you push down) fell off on the way to the field for the competition performance. I didn't realize it want there until I raised my trumpet to play. I tried to play just pushing down the thing the cap screws into but I pushed it once and the it stayed stuck inside the valve casing. So I went through the entire show without pressing the 3rd valve. Luckily there aren't many notes you use the 3rd valve for. If it was the 1st or 2nd valve button that fell off it would have been way worse.

Actually another incident that happened in my band happened to a bass drum. Our bass 5's drum fell of during championships. Luckily it fell off during the end of 2nd to last song. And even more luckily the drumline was near the sideline at the end of that song. He had to take his harness off, to put it back on the drum. Taking off the harness took his hat off though. So he rushed as the last song was about to start. And ended up marching the last song without his hat.

I don't know you Ryan (but I marched with half your staff) and only know Allan by reputation (I was a brass player) but both of you proved exactly what drum corps is about. It isn't about placements or scores for the marchers ultimately but about character building and life lessons. My corps spent a short time in competition winning one World Championship but it also helped change the activity into what we see and hear today. But more importantly it molded me into the person I am today with life long friends that get to see each other every August to cheer and support even more great people getting to experience the best youth activity in the world. This kind of reminds me of my miss hap way back in 89 I got stuck in a banner that the color guard pull over the snare line and I didn't want to break it so I just went all the way to the back of the field stuck in this thing and on the judge tape you can barely hear one of the percussion judges say, "well I guess he wanted to find a girl friend" LOL!! On finals night of my first year marching I had a similar experience to yours. Before we marched onto the field I took my mouthpiece out of my horn to blow into it so it wouldn't be cold when I started to play on it and so when I put it back in my horn I forgot to twist it so that it would stay in my horn so on the first horns up of the show it flew off and hit me in the face. I had a quick dazed moment of what just hit my face then I realized and had an ooh crap moment followed by what do I do. Long story short I marched the rest of the show and didn't play anything. You were lucky to get your drum back! Nice job not going after it though. My first finals was also very memorable! :) -Kaden

What a wonderful act on behalf of Allan. It was certainly cheer-worthy that he was able to catch up to you. It was beautiful to see such a pure act for the sake of the performance.

That is so AWESOME that this judge did this for you. I am so glad that y'all can do this. This is a part of drum corps I am glad that changed, back in my day if you dropped something you had to leave it etc. I am sure you will remember this lesson for the longest time. Sometimes when you fall down you just pick right back up and move on like you did here. I love the lessons drum corps teaches you beyond the musical abilities. Congratulations on a great recovery and on a job well done. Kudos to the Judge.

Allen Kristensen judged my school’s show last week and wow it was the nicest judge tape ever, he gave tips on how to improve , but he said it in a way that made it not seem like criticism, and he complemented the things we did well in a wholesome way.

You freaking killed it! I admire you for going on and still 'playing'. I literally was screaming my head of for you. By far my favorite yet nerve racking moment of the whole night. Props to you and congrats on the amazing journey in Crown for what I am assuming has been your second family for the past few years! :D

Seeing Allen's interaction with the members is priceless. THIS is what drum corps is all about - not the numbers, but the performance of the performers - and the interaction with the audience. What are the odds that YOU would be the one with the go pro on when this happens. Hope the experience was great and something that I know you will never forget!

That is something else. I remember in high school during our regional competition, Q2 (2nd quad in our 5 man formation) lost his stick doing double stops and the judge ran over and gave it back. That was pretty awesome. And the tuplets in this are amazing.

This mishap unintentionally gifted you perhaps one of the most enduring and meaningful memories of your DCI experience. God bless Allan Kristensen for epitomizing the very spirit of drum corps. 👊 (Not sure why the algorithm decided to feed this to me on this day. Such are the mysteries of the universe.)

In my band class about a month ago we watched a bunch of DCI performances and our assistant band director showed us this and told us about what happened! The fact that I'm seeing this right now is mind blowing to me! I guess you could say "Small world!" But still, OUTSTANDING performance! Definitely in my top 3 favorite performances we saw that night!

Alan was my mom's band director when she was in high school, and I was able to talk to him over dinner and discuss all the wonders of dci and band, and the man is such a bright and sprout guy. If any judge would've done something like that, it would obviously be him :)

The way he handled it was professional. He did the right thing and just didn't go for it. Then you have the judge giving it back. This situation was really done well. Props to both of them. Especially the band for not laughing or anything

This is how judges should be. Not those strict ones that stare you down and follow you looking for every little mistake you make. This judge understood that we’re humans, we make mistakes, perfection doesn’t exist.
