Anyone have a guideline to help with a guy like me? I played snare in high school in 2014. But we only played beginner style patterns and cadences.
@docholiday6297 жыл бұрын
I'm not good at this myself but for whatever its worth the drummers that I personally know that are extremely good know ALL their rudiments front to back and everything else in between. They also know how to apply them not only on the snare but a full kit. With their hands and their feet separately and together. It's really crazy to watch. Not only that but they sound very musical not just chops over and over. It actually sounds good.

As a drumming instructor myself who has done clinics with all of the top players, I really like John a lot. He is a showman, yes... but he can back it up with real talent and musicality. It's not just flash. Also, he plays the drum set very well, and he can rock and swing. He is not just a chops guy. I have great respect for John.

Some of it would be more difficult on a kit. But give it a try first on the snare from a standing position. Nothing ventured nothing gained

Having played marching snare in multiple high level groups, I disliked this video because it is extremely basic. And the drum sound really terrible. I doubt sco-jo had a large part in this.
@meh84f84f6 жыл бұрын
I felt the same way as gausgovy. I thought the track playing over the top was tacky, the drum sounded out of place and weird in the music a lot of the time, and the actual playing was rather simple and at times, out of time. Nothing against this guy specifically, I just don't think this is a very good performance.

It sounded like me slapping my belly, or clapping, i usualy expect a "spbow", not "clac".
@jacobbau83284 жыл бұрын
PersonMan1 it’s different than what I’m assuming you listen to. You may be talking about a concert snare drum, this is a marching snare drum, they sound a whole lot different. The marching snare is tighter to allow more notes to come through and th sound is a whole lot crisper, like that “clac” sound you described, and a concert snare is more fuzzy sounding to mesh better with a larger range of instruments and be louder and more noticeable, and it makes that kind of “spbow” sound. You might haven been mistaking the two types.

Wooten’s technique is super entertaining to watch, especially the right hand style, which one of my instructors called the “puppy paw” grip back in the ‘80s and ‘90s. I’ve always preferred it for wrist control and finger speed instead of the “fff” stick heights and overplaying of today. Perhaps it was borne out of the Mylar head days? I don’t know. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. And that Pearl sounds incredible. Love those things!
