Since discovering this video, I’ve watched every single reaction to it on KZbin because it’s just so much fun to watch others discover it. Defo check out the documentary on the session. A couple points that deserve highlighting… -The bassist (Michael League) is the founder and composer. He formed the core group with his music school buddies and but they bring in others when needed (ex: notice the string players sitting this one out - they jump in for other tracks on this album) - This WAS an album recording. They like having a live audience to play for when they record. The headphones allow the audience to hear the main mix. - The drummer (Larnell Lewis) plays with them a lot but was not originally scheduled for this particular session. The drummer who was had issues getting there so Larnell was called in at the last minute to fill in. He knew a couple of the tracks, but the rest he learned during his flight to the session. - The guy face-palming during the keys solo is Shaun Martin. He’s won a handful of Grammys, so if he’s blown away you know that shit was 🔥.

Look for the documentary on the making of this album. The group chose to record in the Netherlands and then go on tour through Europe. They invited the audience to the recording session in order to play off their enthusiasm. The entre album is amazing. The strings and some other instruments were played on other tunes.

That guy who facepalms during Corey's solo, then jokes about taking headphones off and heading home? That's Shaun Martin. He's got six Grammys on his shelf.

Exactly. Representative of the level of Snarky Puppy. They play so hard that multiple grammy winners break out in giggles and feel the need to pretend to leave the studio.

I read it as he's showing Cory Henry the deepest respect and awe by joining the audience-at 11:00 you can see him in the background sitting down among the people behind them and doing a hand motion as if he's saying «good riddance, I can't ever catch up».

This is a recording studio in Europe. All the musicians are in red headphones abd the audience in silver headphones. They git to the studio and started writing the songs. The usual drummer was unable to make it so this drummer, Larnell Lewis was sent the mps of the basic dings with no drums other than the percussionist playing a basic beat and learned most of this on the flight over, by ear, as you can't play drums on the plane. He arrived at the studio two hours before the first of 8 sets, two sets a day over four days. The best takes are the album versions. All were filmed. There is a 90 minute documentary on the CD/DVD of the album which is a 38 minute documentary (available on KZbin) about the making of the album and the 12 day, 12 show tour of Europe. Interspersed in the DVD version, in album order, are the eight videos of the official takes. There is bonus footage from.the tour and alternative solos from other takes by drummer Larnell, keyboardist Corey Henry (he can play many instruments), and one of the horn players. Seen but not heard are a string section that plays on two songs. They are the only people with written music. Most of these guys are graduates of The University of North Texas music program, which ranks up with Juliard and Berkeley School of Music. The bassist is the band leader and main songwriter. For this song, the first half (pre-Larnell stopping the music) is fully "written" via the various people get mp3s of what their parts sound like. The horn section is told he wants the sax and trumpet to play solos back abd forth over so many bars and to overlap each other. The solos are improvised. The second half is really only the staccato drum beat matched by bass and piano. Corey is given full reign to solo and Larnell and the percussionist slowly increase their playing until Corey gives Larnell the head nod to cut back to the full band. That bass drum rhythm never alters until it ends. The horn section plans their half of the final call and response and Corey improves in response and over them. Meanwhile, everyone else is playing that staccato rhythm until the horns and Corey (now on organ) join in. The guy next to Corey who lost his mind took off his headphones and got up shares two Grammys with Snarky and two more for his Gospel work with Kirk Franklin. Drummer Larnell has a few single listen videos, most famously one with Metallica's Enter Sandman. He listens to the sing once, then plays along with it. He wasn't perfect. He made one mistake, and knew it immediately.

Also, there was a number of other recording made in that session, hence the other musicians present who weren't seen playing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Like_It_Here

Snarky Puppy has recorded many of their albums “live in the studio” with a small audience in the room with them listening to the mix through headphones. The We Like It Here album was recorded in the Netherlands in 2014. Their latest album Empire Central was recorded in March in Dallas.

Glad you enjoyed it :) they are all educated in music which is why they sound so amazing. My understanding was that it was a small gig and the audience was all able to wear headphones that were dialed in to the soundboard so they can hear it all in crystal clear quality in real time. I could be wrong and am often but I saw them live and they blew me away with the musicianship. I'm sure others more knowledgeable will chime in. Keep it up, love all your reactions :)

It’s crazy impressive. But it sounds a bit like a broken Commodore 64 at the end
@johncampbell756 Жыл бұрын
@@mwjsbleakwater564 The end was Corey Henry, who had switched from his synth to a Hammond B3 organ, changing the organ settings. I've never played one so I can't better describe that.

Had second thoughts about subscribing when I saw your Dallas Cowboys logo on your desk, however being a long time Niner Fan, I actually felt sorry for you and do have sympathy for those less fortunate so no worries, I ended up subscribing. Good Luck Next Year....!!

No need to feel sorry. And we aren’t less fortunate. 5 Super Bowl wins each. Only difference is you lost it more times than we did. Also everyone gets on our case about not winning it since 1996 but SF has gone longer than us. Winning it last in 1995. So keep your sorry and less fortunate comments and worry about another year going by to make it 30 years without a championship. You have nothing on us.

You asked for some more Snarky Puppy info (which I am interpreting to mean "show me another good tune"). Since you do a lot of rock, metal, and blues you'll probably like the guitar/drum duet on this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKbLeYiVd7-Lic0&ab_channel=GroundUPMusicNYC
