Mild correction: the 'Mac Mini' tag and thunderbolt logos on the unit are just a result of Collin reusing a Mac Mini casing-since his board came loose. The original chassis used for the DTK had no thunderbolt logos on the back, and only the regulatory logos on the bottom.

@@yaowww Ad Sense revenue took a hard dip many years ago. It's a drop in the bucket and isn't enough for these channels to be sustainable, let alone profitable. Hence the rise of ad integrations, dedicated product videos (like the vacuum one), and so on. It pains me to see that people take it all for granted. Don't like the vacuum video? Who gives a shit, don't watch it, but it paid for the next 10 videos, so it's a win for the creator.

I worked on a team that got one of these - primarily to test Apple Silicon as we replaced our dedicated mac app with a Catalyst version adapted from our iPad app. I did most of the work getting everything to compile for the new architecture (and boy was it a wild west when it came to external libraries). The DTK itself was definitely a bit buggy and had several quirks (I had to use DFU mode to reset/fix it on 3 separate occasions). But it was exactly what we needed to get the app ready and tested by the time the M1 came out. On the whole it was worth it for our team, and it was fun to get a glimpse of the future for mac.

I remember many devs got butt hurt when Apple at first wasn’t going to give them free gift cards for retuning the DTKs, which wasn’t even part of the deal anyway. Apple finally relented and gave $500 Apple Store gift cards, essentially making the DTK loan free. Couple years later and the same developers were complaining how Apple was ghosting them after they applied for Apple Vision Pro DTKs. 😂 Apple: The loan period has ended, please send the loan DTK back to us. Developers: All right, when should we expect our gift cards to arrive? Apple: ??? D: We paid to loan these devices. Surely you will give us free Apple Store gift cards for returning them. A: Are you f*king serious? D: Gift cards! A: Here’s your f*cking gift cards. Don’t expect to receive any DTK from us ever again.

Apple: We are green Apple: We destroy working computers that could be useful to someone.
@t.s.449410 сағат бұрын
As I understand it, you can at least partially blame the IRS, because they provide the economic incentive. They allow companies to do tax writeoffs of the cost of building prototype units (which is much higher than most people assume, low production runs are always many times more expensive per unit than stuff which gets sold to consumers). However, in return, they demand proof that each prototype claimed as a writeoff was not (and never will be) sold as a functional product. The easiest way of proving this is to document physical destruction of the prototype. Also, these specific prototypes aren't very useful to anyone. Slow, incompatible, lots of quirks and bugs that can never be fixed. They were useful to developers to begin work on porting their software before real Apple Silicon Macs were on sale, but now they're just museum pieces.
