This is awesome Sly. I like the way you gave the push, pull theory nugget in there. I have found it to make many techniques work well, that otherwise wouldn't at all on a resisting opponent. Many thanks for taking the time to do this brother.

My friends and I broke off from the ASU organization and most of it teachers in this area back in 1994. Before it closed, (Aikishoshikai in Waukegan Ill) was independent. Mostly for the very reasons that you talk about here on your site. We got tired of weak attacks from the uke who were not committed or honest, so while training with that type, you were really getting a false sense of accomplishment. The testing was a joke and usually premature, so all-in-all, I left feeling robbed, and not very confident in that 'training' For these reasons and a few others, we split and started our own dojo. But unfortunately couldn't keep it running financially. Not too many people really wanted to really get hit or thrown so we couldn't keep the space for very long. Been looking for a permanent home ever since. Also btw, we did practice this great technique. It was really cool to see it again explained clearly and executed proficiently. Keep up the great work Sir.

I respect this man because he has the testicular fortitude and decency to say, that Akido isn't the "greatest" or "most effective" he's demonstrated how certain movements that are practiced won't cut it in real world fighting. Especially going up against a MMA fighter. But Aikido as far as I'm concerned is a great starting point cause it teaches concepts like distance, leverage, timing, angles, and momentum.

Aikido was not created for MMA, it was derived from a battlefield art. As such, it features a wider range of technique which is applicable in real life circumstances, but is discarded in the very narrow scenario of MMA fighting. Given how the average person's chances of being mugged by an MMA fighter are infinitessimal, and only 5% of population practices any martial arts AT ALL (nevermind MMA), Aikido can be perfectly effective for reality application, and offer a wider range of response which is more appropriate to the potential of being attacked by weapons, robbed, rushed by 2 guys, or other non-standard scenarios which never happen in the ring. Of course Aikido has to be practiced with martial application in mind, unlike what's happening in most "classic Aikido" dojos. Oh and there are MMA "habits" that are just plain bad for reality self-defense. For example, Tenshin Aikido guard is derived from weapon application, as it also protects your neck from being stabbed. Boxing guard does not. Also, the MMA "triangle block" obscures your peripheral vision, which is fine in the ring, but bad for reality. The habit of going to the ground, drilled into some MMA fighters, is also very bad for reality.

Hey question, I've never done this nor had this applied to me. How much does this throw hurt and what is gonna hit the ground in it? Thank you!
@tenshinuke560
@tenshinuke560 8 жыл бұрын
when applied with full intent/power, the nikyo alone is enough to break your wrist. the kotegaeshi applied for real is also very painful and can break your wrist. if you didnt know how to take ukemi, the throw will force you to fall either on your face, on top of your head, or your neck. if you're lucky enough you might fall on your shoulder, which still hurts
@afiqsince86
@afiqsince86 8 жыл бұрын
the throw itselfs doesnt hurt (if you know how to take the fall) but the nikyo (lock) will stay for quite sometime if your nage is an ass lol..
