Would you be willing to make a video on apologizing and how to effectively apologize? I would love to see something like that!

Your points about apologizing are so true! I think people don’t know how to properly apologize and they may have pure intentions but do not know how to communicate how sorry they are! There’s definitely a huge gap in communication on this within society

Thank you! When I started working in mental health, I was shocked by how normalized all the points you made here were. I know there are many agencies out there that avoid these unhealthy practices, but I found none of those in my area at the time. It really broke my heart that agencies who seemingly made their whole purpose about helping and empowering people also turned out to be the most predatory toward the actual caregivers in their employ. It really stained my heart and was really quite traumatic for me. I'm so thankful to be in private practice today and am seeking greater stability in my practice. I feel that clients deserve practitioners that are also empower to help themselves. Otherwise it risks becoming the sick trying to give what they don't have to their clients.

2:06 - This really helped see where I can do better with my responses to my young adult daughter. She recently brought something to my attention that hurt her feelings and because I didn't feel I actually did anything "wrong" I mostly focused on explaining my perspective. I did tell her I didn't intend to hurt her and I was sorry her feelings were hurt. I also said I would try to be more aware of how I handle that situation in the future. BUT...when you said the employer should ask themselves "Why is my valued employee coming to me with this concern?" it prompted me to think from HER perspective more. Looking again at what she had expressed, I realized the emotional need I didn't fulfill and how I should have behaved differently. So I will be going back to apologize again and let her know I realize where I messed up. All that to say, sometimes a person really doesn't see their fault or mistake (fully) so they offer the best apology or response they can. I think you can tell when a person really cares amd just has a blind spot versus when they just want to pacify you. I thank God for showing me this insight through your video. Please keep up the great wotk!

I believe I've seen at least some of these signs in every workplace I've worked. It does help to see what it is even if the organization will not so you don't internalize it and can catch yourself if/when you start participating in it. Cool video! Thank you for your content.

Oddly enough, I feel like this can be applied to unhealthy social media groups.

I go to Northwestern University's Counseling program and this hits everything and more. Northwestern honestly has one of the most abusive and sick counseling programs our there :'( Thank you so much for making this video! This really needs to be said and so many therapists deal with this and gaslight ourselves to be ok with it.

Gosh, I'm really sorry to hear this. To think that the dysfunction is now starting with the educational programs is really disheartening. Hang in there, I hope you get out of there unscathed. Good luck to you!

Oh boy, I could write a book on this topic. It's because of dysfunctional work environments that I'm now starting my own private practice. It reached a point where I felt my license was at risk due to the dysfunction and things going on that the higher ups chose to turn a blind eye to. I feel so much relief leaving all that behind. Fingers crossed I can make a go of it in private practice, because otherwise I don't see me staying in the field. Sadly, it's that unhealthy out there. Best wishes to all who are feeling suck in such a place!

I'd like to see a longer video pointing at apologies or taking ownership when apologizing versus sugarcoating by using "I'm sorry" or such similarities.

Good one. Great reminders for therapists working with folks that have these issues in their lives.

One of the first signs... the person interviewing you who is the right hand of the owner is gossiping to another employee about another employee in front of you. The 2nd sign is they say "we are like a family" and emphasizes trust as if they need to work on their issues of trust. The 3rd sign is when the backbite gossiper tells you the boss says he doesn't think you fit in when he's rarely even talked to you. Weirdly they only wanted people working for them that were subservient and turn a blind eye. 4th... seeing the owner playfully abuse their right hand person. And that person normalize and rationalize it. 5th the company taking over your personal life for free labor. 6th sign is a therapy company that prides themselves on being "not like corporate" but totally has all the bells and whistles of a corporate therapist mill. The last sign... a colleague tells you that you are not being treated right without you even saying anything.

The small group practice I’m part of actually does feel like a family, and my manager encouraged me not to say that to people we interview bc it’s a red flag in many workplaces. Whoops. (I grew up in a… challenging household, and this workplace has offered me many corrective experiences unlike where I worked as a trainee. Its mission and values also align with mine which is rare to find.)
