Amazon completely dominated the e-commerce market last year, making roughly $283 billion. With the perks of Amazon's services, it can be hard to pass up free speedy, if not same day, delivery. The average Amazon Prime member is reported to spend around $1,400 per year, while non-members spend $600.

But it isn’t instant. It takes a day or two for the package to arrive. Imagine being at the grocery store, picking out your veggies, milk, bread and cheese, paying for them but not taking them home. You have to come back the next day to take them home. Or it gets delivered the next day. In my college days I worked at a convenience store. 24/7/365 choke-a-block with impulse buy items. Chips, pop, magazines, gum, candy. Customers had to wend their way through the entire store to get “real” things like milk or bread. That was instant gratification. No matter the time or day customers could fulfill their junk food craving. 3am on Xmas morning? Yup. But the prices were all 15-20% higher than the grocery store.

Never use the "Buy Now" option, use add to basket, then open your cart and proceed to checkout. Many times the product price changes, and so does the shipping cost. And on top of that you get two shipping methods - the expansive one is chosen by default from the "Buy Now" option. The shipping method does not mean safer journey or better packaging! It only means faster shipping.

If you buy in bulk on Amazon for items you use a lot of (pasta, sugar, and coffee spring to mind), you can potentially save money on that item. For example, my mum buys commercial sized tubs of coffee and sugar from amazon and it works out cheaper buying one of those tubs every 3-4months than constantly having to go to the shop for a small container at like £4 for the bag of sugar and jar of coffee.

@@humannaturedj Not necessarily. With online you see the total before clicking purchase and can easily delete items off if you don't want them any longer. @@LuizAlexPhoenix that's not what the sunken cost fallacy is. Sunken cost fallacy is keep investing in something because you've already invested a lot into it. IE Doing a project at work that will lead to nowhere but you keep going at it because you've already spent weeks on that project. Or keep investing in a stock that isn't performing because you've already invested a few thousand into it already. That prime membership is a reoccurring annual fee so it's not a "past" or sunken cost. It's a reoccurring one and it's not free because you're paying for that specific service, in this case shipping, albeit you're paying for a different scope of that service.

I’m disabled so during the winter it’s a life saver for me for home items or groceries from Whole Foods. I’m on the third floor of a walk up and they bring everything right up! I also got a year of prime free. A lot of items really aren’t worth it, like I am a prolific knitter but yarn is ridiculously expensive on Amazon, so there are plenty of yarn companies online offering free shipping and half off and a bunch of other great coupons.

Amazon used to be consistently competitive shopping, but now it seems like Amazon is (sometimes) cheaper for big-ticket items, but much more expensive for small items. A $2 bottle of lotion from Walmart (if bought or picked up in-store) might cost $8-$12 on Amazon (free shipping with a wait). Even a few years ago before Amazon became an evil overlord, I would notice that a lot of "free shipping" items were about as expensive as "item + shipping" elsewhere, although that's true for most online retailers.

I have a list of 50 items on Amazon, that I would like to buy but are too expensive in my opinion. I check at every special occasion, like Black Friday, Prime Day, etc and their price NEVER go down. On those days, only low quality chinesium go on sale, in a pre-planned manner I believe. The golden rules are: never rush a purchase, and learn how to establish the true fair price of every item. Money is hard to come by; respect of your money is equal to the respect of yourself.

I have spent $189 in the past 12 months in amazon, that's because the wife needed some medical supplies other than that amazon not competitive anymore. btw they relentlessly try to get me to sign up for prime. I know that should I sign up for prime I'll feel obligated to continue to buy from them to get my money worth on prime.

There's one thing I have noticed lately, a psychological factor - the Amazon box, especially with the ribbon, gives out that "Big Mac" fast-but-safe vibe. So if you see a box in the trash or if you see someone getting delivered, your mind wonders to shopping even when you don't need anything. It's not their fault though.

Costco’s ships in TWO (2) Days too! Granted it’s not offered on every single item they sell. However, it’s the “necessities” that their customers usually purchase on a weekly or monthly visit to their warehouse.

One thing that really pisses me off are companies that use fulfilled by amazon and have the products on their own website more expensive. I go though the trouble of navigating to their website, finding the same product, only to find out they don't want business. I want to help the sellers out directly, instead of letting amazon taking a cut, but not always successful.

I use Amazon for Kindle books and items that I cannot get from local shops. Apart from that I prefer to see the item I am buying, and have often had better deals in physical shops. As for my Kindle purchases, well maybe once a year I will spend £5+ on a book that I particularly want, but usually I look at the £0.99 deals, where, if you're willing to wait, you will often find the same books appearing. I prefer real books where I can, but have had to accept that after a lifetime as a bibliophile, I have run out of space.

Nishith Joshi the people made it into a monopoly, so blame the people not the company. A lot of people knew that Amazon could become a monopoly if people keep buying from them, making them have more buying power. Any company goal is to expand and increase sales, at the same time making your customer feel more comfortable and the experience of shopping at your business convenient.

in India Amazon has got huge market vase because for their ease to do shopping schemes. they even reach out to villages in far off remote places. n they are still to tap more off the market. i find them convenient for shopping as it's 100 times better to sit n search than physically go from one store to another for the same items.
