Mayor of Gaming We did not argue about consoles as kids. I had a Genesis and my friend had a SNES. Later I had an N64 and he had a Playstation. I later got a SNES and PS2 and caught up on the games I missed. Why would someone chose to miss a library of games being a fanboy?

No consoles were as different and distinct as the Snes/Gen. In my perspective it created a schism between gamers different personal preferences in game design, hardware, sound, and difficulty that still holds up today. That's why it's so contentious, it's about the tough and often frenetic, trial and error, score based arcade gaming experience employed by Sega with their Genesis (SoR, Shinobi, Bio Hazard Battle, Sonic, Super Hang On etc) versus the more forgiving, often exploratory, non-arcade experience offered by Nintendo and their Snes (SMW, Lttp, Kirby Super Star, Super M etc). People have a hard time embracing things that don't suit them, so instead of humbly accepting the stark difference between the consoles, commending their strengths and moving on, it's easier to blab that one approach or console is "superior" to the other. I prefer Sega's 1st and 3rd party 16-bit content but I'll be damned if I didn't also enjoy and appreciate what Nintendo was bringing to gaming. Rip Sega though lol.

"You picked your side, or more accurately... you ended up with whatever your parents bought you and, from then on, you defended your console tooth and nail". Truer words haven't been said, drunk. That's the whole truth of everything. The first console I chose by myself was the PSP when I was 19 (nine years ago), and that's the only console I actually consider myself a fanboy of. But yeah, the genesis had plenty great exclusive games. Funnily enough, when a friend of my told me he had a cd with a hundred of genesis roms, the first thing I said was "do you have the michael jackson game??" The 90s were fun

lucky us who had both systems. My first own console was the Mega Drive while my dad has an SNES. So i was fortunate to play on both systems when they were still hot. I still kinda prefered the SNES because of the SPC Soundchip. Seriously, we often had it running through the AV receiver speakers and it blew you away. Especially when you played Axelay, Parodius, Unirally, Super Metroid or the JRPGs like Secret of Evermore.

nice video - as a kid I had a SNES but never felt that I had to trash the other consoles, I always wanted a Genesis and loved it when I could play one at a friends house or check out the Sega CD before any other systems had CD drives at that point. I bought gaming magazines that covered all the systems because I was just interested in everything that was out there. Today I feel lucky to collect for Sega consoles and play the titles I missed out on as a kid, but I still like the old Nintendo consoles and I dont understand why people want to trash one or the other

I think what drove kids to trash the other console was their inability to have access to it - basically jealousy. In my case, my cousins had Genesis and I had SNES and we took turns playing at each others houses constantly, so there was no real reason to develop fanboyism. Although there was definitely a lot of friendly rivalry and "mine is better" type arguments.

I dug this video. Like that you keep finding new ways to look at these games, and I definitely agree with all of these. This is sort of my beat on my channel, so there are a couple games you didn't mention that you might want to look at if you ever do a part two! Saturday Night Slammasters on the Genesis lets you use the two boss characters and includes a Death Match option not in the SNES version. It also has a couple frames of animation for characters that the SNES port is missing. The SNES port has the 4-player mode, though, but that's only an advantage if you have four players. WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game is missing two characters on the SNES, but honestly, the 16-bit ports are pretty lacking when it comes to that game. Captain America and the Avengers looks a bit better on the SNES, but it plays like utter trash, the Genesis version is super fun and very close to the arcade in terms of playability. Spider-Man/X-Men and Wolverine: Adamantium Rage are both bad games on both platforms, but the Genesis versions of both are better than the SNES.

Sparkster was different on both systems and I felt the Genesis version was better overall. Had better level and boss design. Better variety of enemies. Was more challenging. Even though there were only 5 main levels, they were pretty long. I prefer the way the rocket pack worked on the snes version though.

Different games, but I'd said the game's concept is better suited for the Genesis faster processor. The SNES game, being great, looks to me like the less impressive of the bunch.
@yohkom.7988
@yohkom.7988 6 жыл бұрын
SNES Sparkster is the more polished game, Konami A-Team did it (after that Nintendo whined seeing how good Rocket Knight Adventures was) while it's pretty obvious that it's Konami B, maybe even C-Team that did the Mega Drive game unlike Rocket Knight Adventures which had Konami involved at 100%. Konami weren't always at their full on Sega systems but despite this most of their releases on them still kickass, because of the great hardwares and also because Konami. Symphony of the Night on Saturn is another example, it's said that Konami even let a note somewhere where they apologize for the poorer than expected quality of the conversion. But they made up for this with lot of exclusive content and some people actually prefer this version over the Playstation due to this. As for Sparkster MD, despite being quite lazily made, apparently it's still a pretty good game. Now if it's better than the SNES version? I can't say yet, but dat 1st stage music, freaking amazing!!!
@Dj.D25
@Dj.D25 6 жыл бұрын
How was the Snes version more polished? Most of the enemies had the same attack pattern, which was just run up to you and jump towards you. There was hardly any enemy variety, other than costume changes the wolf enemies had depending on the stage. The obstacles most stages had I felt didn't really push the limits of what could have been done with them. The bosses and mini bosses were mostly easy and didn't really put full use of the rocket pack or require technique like the Genesis games did. (The stage 7 boss was the hardest because of how random it's attack patterns were and you had to beat him as soon as possible or you were defenseless) How was the Genesis version lazy, if that game was more challenging and bosses were more carefully designed in how to defeat them? It's almost as well made as Rocket Knight Adventures. Though I didn't really like the item slot machine since it seemed most of the time you got a bomb. The only real advantages I saw the snes version have were better, more detailed graphics, more colors, better sound effects and arguably better music since both games shared some of the same songs, but had a different mood to them depending on the stage.
@yohkom.7988
@yohkom.7988 6 жыл бұрын
From what I've seen, SNES Sparkster is at least visually more polished which makes it looks like Konami A-Team did it instead of the MD version. But I'm glad to learn about all the gameplay differences that you pointed out! Also it's very possible that sometime a B or C-Team does a better job than an A one. You make me really want to play this game now! :) Also the Mega Drive game runs in higher resolution which makes the visuals crisper and with a wider playfield. And about music, I only compared the tune from the 1st stage and I much prefer it on Mega Drive!

I didn’t have to deal with the console war. I was an older kid with a job at the end of the nes days. I bought all 3 snes,genesis, and tb16. Turbografx 16 is one of the most criminally underrated systems ever.

I wish people would stop saying the Super Nintendo hardware was not suited to shoot em ups when it clearly was as demonstrated by Super Aleste (Space Megaforce). Shoot em up programmers simply weren't competent enough with the hardware available most of the time when working on the SNES. The Mega Drive had the advantage of using the same CPU the Amiga and Atari ST had been using for years before that so there was no shortage of highly experienced programmers who understood how to get the best out of it. Also i'm surprised Aladdin wasn't mentioned (even though the SNES game is very good as well).

I loved the Strike games (Desert, Jungle & Urban) so much as a kid that I did a temporary console swap with a Genesis owning neighbour to be able to play them more. When I finally bought SNES copies later on in life they just weren’t the same - had a clunky feel and the sound (which was awesome) was off. Don’t think these games are exactly regarded as classics, but they spring to mind first for me in terms of being better on Sega.

I'm one of those that on this day liked what the SNES had more but there is no shame in what the Genesis had. Phantasy Star, Monster World, Ghouls n' Ghosts, Sonic, Castlevania Bloodlines, Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Gunstar Heros, Beyond Oasis, and a few other things stand out for me still. Sadly this list you brought up though means nothing to me cause I really don't care for sports games, movie tie ins, and shooters. But meh, everyone has their preferences.

Clint There needs to be more love for the OG Phantasy Star Games. Phantasy Star 4 was easily on par with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6, IMO, and I even preferred the story to either of it's exemplary contemporaries (which is kind of unfair since CT was a new IP and FF games are each self-contained at this point, while PS4 was ending a multi-console-generation sci-fi/fantasy epic that spanned millennia).

SNES has some great games for sure. DK Country 1-3, Zelda ALttP, SMW + All Stars, SM RPG, Lion King, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, FF IV (II), etc. However I personally grew up with Genesis and have found more overall games I enjoy than on SNES. They're both great systems though. I'll never neglect a game just because it's not on my favorite or preferred system. ✌

Man as childs we battled a lot between my friends and i on which console was better. SNES team pointed some color stuffs and we Genesis crew used to rely on heavy tittles and some blood restriction on Snes (like the known-by-all Mortal Kombat). At the end of the day, here in Argentina Sega won the competition just by being cheaper (after some times some "Genesis clones" came up really cheap) and with cheaper games. If you buy a SNES, you'll end up with Mario Land and just a few other games since they would be massively expensive in comparisson with Genesis games. i will nevertheless admit that one friend back in the day sold a Megadrive in order to purchase a SNES and he was very happy with that

IIRC, the Motorola CPU in the Genesis is twice the speed of the CPU in SNES, which was the reason for the “blast processing” marketing catch phrase. SNES had some very cool hardware acceleration functions in the Mode 7, and its 30k+ color palette, vs 64 in the Genesis, simply made gorgeous looking games, perfect for slower paced RPGs.

What I loved most about this era was ports had to be modified to accommodate the particular system. Often this would lead to entirely different games across platforms and you would want to play them both. One great example you could have used here is the Beavis and Butthead game.

Quite a lot, if you are not biased. Especially if you play them as intended, on original hardware and on a CRT. SNES looks WAAAAAY better than Genesis when upscaled, thanks to the larger number of colors that made the games rely much less on dithering, which is virtually unnoticeable on a CRT, tho. Most platformers and action games that were released on both systems ran better on Genesis thanks to the higher clock, which allowed for smoother animations and better handling of sprites. Multiplatform games ofter have more frames of animation on Genesis and thus feel quicker and more responsive. A couple examples that come to mind are Mickey Mania and Earthworm Jim. Now, if we are talking games that were completely different on each system, like Aladdin, that's another discussion. By the way, I own both consoles and still play them currently. They are both excellent systems with incredible games.

I had a Genesis, all my friends had a SNES. I got mine in 1989, and it had a bunch of games to purchase. iirc, my friends couldn't get a SNES til 1991, and there wasn't a bunch of games like with the Genesis at the time. Maybe it had to do with where I live (Small town N.H.) more then availability in total.

Good list. I often hear people mention the Strike games in these discussions, haven't compared them properly myself but the MD games seem to sound better. Lost Vikings - 3-player, higher res and more levels on MD, but worse music overall and lacks the world transitions. IIRC Jungle Book had better controls and higher res on MD (several multiplat games were higher res on MD and it sometimes improves gameplay). Mickey Mania has a few advantages on MD, it even has loading times on SNES, but there's also a PS1 version that's really good. The site retro-sanctuary has some fairly detailed comparisons for other games.

Even though "Blast Processing" may have been nothing more than a made up phrase for marketing, Sega was on to something when they began using the phrase. As you said, the Genesis did have a faster CPU than the SNES (about twice as fast if I remember right), so yeah it could run certain games at faster speeds, and have less slowdown at least in certain games. I think the SNES' main advantage was it had a better graphics processor which is why the system was able to handle effects like Mode 7 with little issue while on Genesis devs kinda had to do some special programming to get Mode 7-like effect working. I think this also meant the SNES could do more detailed sprite work, though I also heard the genesis could do "bigger" sprites, so I guess things sorta even out there. Also one game I felt was better on Genesis than on SNES was the Toy Story game. The Genesis version has more music and animations (for example the end of level results screen is practically ear piercing on SNES and has Woody just do a looping animation, but on Genesis it plays a catchy tune and Woody has a full victory animation), and it had an exclusive level that was based off of Outrun (a level where Buzz and Woody ride RC to get to the moving truck).
@Luigiawesome13

Imo, Toy Story is horrible on the Genesis. It looks ugly (compared to the SNES' vibrant, movie-like colors) and the sound was terrible. I know it had an extra level, but (again) imo, it's not really worth it if it looks dull.
