Fun fact. Almost all snickers are made with snickers. We call it rework and it’s when too many bars are going down the line and don’t go to the machines so instead of throwing it away, we collect it in a huge barrel and incorporate back into the production process. I worked for Mars.

Add nuts if you’re really grieving and don’t forget the smorgasbord of CASSEROLES. Thing is, we have wonderful restaurants, we shop at Whole foods, America is pretty damn homogenous but some regional stuff holds so strong!! I’ve never had a jello mold or Waldorf salad on either coast. Living overseas had me missing the midwestern foods I’d normally think of as grim but goddamn, I missed corn pudding and green bean casserole and jello fruit salads and cottage cheese with CANNED mandarin oranges and pineapple. AND you should try Watergate salad!! With Waldorf, and oh hell, how about a trio and make the third musketeer the seafoam salad 😊 Because a smile can go a loooong way 😊

I wanna laugh since kids' tv has taught me the plethora of what seems to be classified as "Midwestern food" (aka casseroles and funny 50s-era concoctions with canned/artificial food) is what was considered gross and tiring on a daily basis. Also growing up as a 2nd-generation kid of immigrants, my parents didn't get into a whole lot of "only-in-America" food. I didn't try meatloaf and green bean casserole until I was about 16, and ambrosia salad until I was in college. I could remember how my favorite tv shows used to crap on these kinds of foods. Shoot, I had never tried a gingerbread house until Christmas this year, only to find out my SO's mom hates gingerbread (and meatloaf, possibly green bean casserole, and other similar foods). I think because she grew up just eating these all the time, so maybe that's where the association with tv came from. 🤷♀️ Oh well, kinda useless to look down on food, for food is good. I'm in love with our diversity of cuisine, no matter how "weird" it looks - always subjective. Casseroles were the butt of many jokes I was exposed to, but done well they are a godsend, especially any with plenty of cheese, onions, potatoes, or all 3.

Gretchen Campos I come from funeral potato land, fortunately I’m in Ohio and I didn’t get subjected to the full blown olive cheez whiz sort of horror I’ve seen at OTHER midwestern horror shows, I mean family gatherings. I’ll admit it! I love some cold fluffy “salads” and cottage cheese jello anything and if it’s cooked in one dish it’ll look like puke but taste oh so fine. That said, I am not xenophobic and I love other foods from other lands and like someone said FOOD IS GOOD! Yep, pretty much all of it, some is definitely prettier than others, or more sophisticated. It’s like people! There’s a real charm in the small town innocence of your human equivalent to a green bean casserole ❤️🙏🏻❤️

Emmyyyy I love your hair getting longer! Well, to be honest, I love the short spiky too...both look great on you! We grew up having this salad, I’m 52 and grew up in Arkansas. My favorite salad like this is something we called “pink stuff” .....a container of cool whip, a container of cottage cheese, a package of strawberry jello, a can of mandarin oranges, and a can of crushed pineapple. I looooooove it and my kids do too! We switch it up and use peach jello sometimes, it’s good that way too! I would love to see you give it a try and let us know what you think! =} (lots of people put a can of sweetened condensed milk and that’s obviously good but way too sweet in my opinion so I leave it out)

Anyway, it's called frugtsalat, fruit salad, which is basically a bunch of different fruits chopped up, chocolate chips or chopped chocolate, and mixed with whipped cream. Or if you were fancy, you'd just mix the fruits and chocolate, and serve it with a vanilla sauce on the side.

See when I make ambrosia, no nasty jello involved. I do it the Italian way, tiny marshmallows, sour cream, Mandarin oranges and either chopped or crushed pineapple. I like the crushed better because I'm not a huge fan of pineapples to begin with it in general but the juice and the little bits in THIS salad is really good. Put in the fridge and you are good to go! Some people put maraschino cherries. I don't because I don't like them and I think it makes it toooooo sweet. I used to make this all the time when I worked at callcenters/offices. Cheap and easy for potlucks and most people love it.

Here's a recipe my family has always done and I've never understood but still immensely enjoy. My mother got the recipe from her mother and I'm unsure where it originated. We are from southern Indiana if that gives any hints 🤷♀️ Mock Taco (unsure why they call it this) -1lb of ground beef -2 big jars of tostinos salsa (spicey level is preference) -2 big jars of tostinos cheese sauce -1 head of iceberg lettuce, chopped/shredded -1 family size bag of nacho Doritos and then an extra bag or two for dipping and what not (also may need to add some extra into the pot if it's too thin. It should be on the thjcker side) -sour cream (essential topping) Brown beef, add in the sauces, add lettuce, and finally the chips and cook until soft. Serve with more nacho Doritos to dip and sour cream on top. Honestly it's terrible for you but I'd probably ask for it on my death bed 🤷♀️😂

I've never had it, but in eastern NC, where I grew up congealed salads were popular and often seen at covered dish dinners and potlucks. What they called ambrosia salad was orange Jell-O with Mandarin oranges, canned fruit cocktail, mini marsallows and either cool whip, cottage cheese, mayo, yogurt, or cream cheese They also did Coca-Cola salad a lot (cherry or raspberry Jell-O, Coca-Cola or pepsi, pecans, canned crushed pineapple) And my grandpa always made a congealed salad at Thanksgiving and Christmas that we called green junk in our family, but it is sometimes called green stuff or just lime Jell-O salad by others (also similar to seven up salad). It was lime Jell-O, cream cheese (some people use cottage cheese, others sometimes put mini marshmallows as well), chrushed pineapple, pecans, and cool whip. And my mom often made Waldorf salad when I was a kid that was apples, walnuts or pecans, celery, plumped raisins, and mayo. I HATED it growing up and still probably do haha. I didn't like the congealed salads much when I was a kid either, but they have such a strong association with my childhood and people I loved that are no longer here, for me, that I have grown to like them as I've gotten older.

I'm from ND. If it is cold and has more than 3 ingredients it can be called a salad. It can be a green salad with veggies, a pasta salad, a fruit salad, or a salad like the video with Cool Whip and or pudding. . Church basement potlucks are a staple of Upper Midwest culture, and salads like I listed are as a much a staple as hotdishes. The version of this I grew up with also had fudge stripe cookies and sometimes also grapes. Glorified rice was always one of my childhood favorites, along with Mt Dew salad that used Mt Dew, lemon jello, cool whip, lemon pudding and pimeaple.
