"The Closest Thing Squats ever got to a Codex" Second Edition 40K's Codex Imperialis section on Squats (and accompanying Codex Army list supplement): "Am I a joke to you?" Also in regards to the "Squats got eaten by Tyranids" this explanation was heavily alluded to (to the point of being pretty much confirmed) within the 2021 Liber Xenologis, as Janus Draik states "I had heard rumours that many of (the Squat's) worlds were consumed by Xenos fleets" (not to mention the last Psychic Awakening book implying the return of Squat fleets, with a race named "the squ-" being thought to have been long extinct) As for Draco being non canon, bear in mind he was mentioned within the Inquisition illustrated encyclopaedia from 2007, even getting a full page article about him in the process :D (not to mention all the ongoing references to it in recent editions, such as the Mother Gullet story, as well as him being outright name-dropped in the newest Kal Jericho novel - Sinner's Bounty)

Military aristocracy (or a ruling class composed by a king an his closest/best band of fighters) is taken straight from ancient and medieval germanic and norse societies, which fits with the whole anglosaxon/viking aescetic the squats and fantasy dwarfs usually sport. indeed, a lot of historical nobilities based their legal privileges on the basis of their ability at war. The citizens-soldiers of Athens and Rome controlled those city states because they had the money to afford the armour needed to defend it. The Feudal knights of the middle ages claimed their place in society on the back of their martial prowess (The Second Estate), as did the samurai of japan. A significant proportion of most officer corps in Napoleonic armies were of noble birth. In fact, I think its a fair observation that the majority of "noble" systems had warfighting as the reason they were socially elevated, at least initially. Their ability to defend the State granted them privileges with that state.

Warpath showed that the Squats work just fine so long as the company supports the product line. There is almost not difference in style with the Forge Fathers and squats just some updated design aspects.
@TheDirtysouthfan
@TheDirtysouthfan 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, how well a faction does is related to how much care and investment the company puts into them. Death Guard were just an average CSM army, I don't recall ever seeing them on the tabletop before 8th edition. Now they're one of the most popular armies because GW invested heavily into them. Same thing with Dark Eldar, when I started playing they weren't even available in store and seemed more like a rumor than a full faction, now they've surpassed their CWE cousins in popularity. The problem though is that you have to have someone who is super into the faction. Everyone that was super into Squats had left which was part of the reason they were discontinued. I'd also take what people who worked at GW say with a grain of salt since they're often biased. The closest we got to a full Squat comeback was in the late 90's where GW was trying to come up with a brand new race. They had many competing ideas including Squats, they designed and reworked ideas until in the end it was down to Kroot and Tau and so they decided to just merge them into one faction and add in the other ideas as auxiliaries for Tau.

The mid '90s Epic supplement Ork and Squat Warlorlds may in some ways also be as close to a Squats Codex as anything, even if they had to share it with the hated greenskins. Sadly I never got that supplement (I had Armies of the Imperium, the equivalent supplement for Space Marines and Imperial Guard) but despite having some Epic Squats for 1st edition Epic I was unable to afford Ork and Squat warlords so I don't know if it actually included much in the way of interesting lore for them.

If any detail of Inquisitor/Draco is canon it would make sense that it would be the squats being eaten by tyranids. That particular detail was added as part of a forward written from the perspective of an Inquisitorial Acolyte who provides the in-universe explanation for that novel being non-canon, he says he tried to verify the account of events given in the book, finds he cannot, and would greatly appreciate it if he could just erase the book from existence, a sentiment we all share.

There is a guy out there, his name is Phil and he probably still plays Squats to this day. There is no reason a pocket of Squat survivors couldn't still be out there, armed with hover boards and void bombs just harassing the crap out of Orks and Eldar and everyone else just for the fun of it.

Demiurg are briefly mentioned in a Ciaphas Cain novel, described as squat-ish in shape and stature in their void armor/space suits. In total no more than a single paragraph. Another Squat, Sholto Unwerth, might or might not have appeared in the Ravenor series as a ship captain, along with his manhound.

I've just recently discovered this Codex Compliant series and I'm absolutely loving it, but one of my favorites parts is how often you two talk about something we've actually gotten in the last couple years. Really makes me appreciate the GW release schedule in a way I didn't before.

Squats had a mini-army list in the Codex Army Lists book from 2nd edition. Their excuse for not seeing squats in any games or armies or whatever seems bad, because they didn't even get a chance in 2nd edition with proper model support.

Might have missed it in the video, but iirc Citadel Journal *did* have a brief article that was a guide for fielding Squats in 3rd edition, along with Jervis' explanation of why they were removed from the game. From what I recall, the fluff presented was that their homeworlds were attacked by the Tyranids, and the surviving colonies were conquered and incorporated into the Imperium proper, where the Squats were badly mistreated. The article suggested Squats could be fielded in two ways: either as an Imperial Guard force, with their lowered stat line reflecting that the Squats have been psychologically broken by the Imperial Boot, or as Orks, representing renegade Squats who remain proud and free. The Renegade's poor ballistic skill was meant to reflect the Squats having very poor quality equipment/ammunition, rather than not being able to actually hit anything. It wasn't a terrible idea, but given the Journal sometimes published all sorts of elaborate unofficial rules I'm not sure why they didn't just make a new list.

If they disliked the name "Squats", they could have just retconned it to be a derogatory name that humans referred to them by. And all previous materials related to that name was because they were written/translator be imperial scribes who had the proclivity to use that term.

@@0hMax A great find! I started (re)collecting squats about 2 years ago,, been scrolling eBay and other media ever since ;) By now I've hoarded about 80% of their old range + some Grombrindals. I hope you will find your commanders and heavy weapons. Seems people still add them to eBay on a daily/weekly base, some for very reasonable prices. I'm now mainly missing the plastic infantry. In pewter/metal I'm still looking for 2 pirates (#6 and #10) and 3 iron claw characters (Capt Budd, Lambast and Levi). I might have a few doubles/triplets from buying lots in case you can't find certain miniatures.
