@@USERWASBANNED My apologies, having read my comment again I realise it doesn't make much sense even though it did in my mind because of the context I view the game in, but I neglected to explain my opinion more detailed. To further elaborate, as some people before me I'm sure pointed out, in my opinion the entire TF2 game is built for close to mid range combat. Yes the demoman and soldier can spam stickies and pipes or rockets from afar, the engie can use the wrengler to deal damage when you'd otherwise be out of range, but with all these examples and all others the damage is far from it's maximum potential for these classes and also you as the person being attacked have an easy time dodging or retreating all together. The only class that is specifically build the oposite of this, is the sniper. Where all classes are weak the further away you are, the sniper is stronger. As such, you'll always be at a disadvantage at the start of the fight and as you work your way to close the distance. Additionally, all classes have built in weaknesses that you can sure learn to diminish through thousands of hours of experience, but you can never really eliminate them. Sniper on the other hand, is the only class who's weakness is precisely inexperience. A good sniper, will hit most if not all of his headshots from mid or even close range, where supposedly the class should be weak. To use your example, a god 6s demo will be able to diminish his close range weakness by some ammount by being able to hit more consistent directs or even airshots on people bombing him, but ultimately it's a game of predicting where you're oponent will be which is at it's core just guessing. Ofcourse it's a calculated and educated guess, but a guess nonetheless. That surely doesn't apply to sniper, which has a hitscan weapon. Each class' skill ceiling has intrinsic built in weaknesses that can't ever fully be negated or eliminated, except the sniper. I know it can seem like a stretch because ofcourse humans and human aim will never be absolutely perfect 100% of the time without miss, but if you think about it there is a reason cheater bots use sniper as their class and not something else. I have nothing but respect for sniper mains, it takes tremendous levels of skill to play it to perfection, but I still believe Valve didn't really think things through with this class when they initially conceptualised the game, or perhaps they just didn't anticipate how good their playerbase will eventually become. This is ofcourse all just a personal opinion and view based on my own beliefs about the game and the experience I got over the last 13 years of playing it. I understand people might disagree, I don't think there's any right and wrong necesarily as things might not be as black and white, but I'm open to discussions and hearing different points of view any time.

That's a COMPLETE lie. On Gravelpit's Developper comment, on the final point, a dialogue box talking about Sniper says explicitly that Sniper was a tricky class to balance, because his close-range weakness would become irrelevant in the hand of an experienced player. This is also how the charge mechanic was created : To force Sniper to stand still (and have tunnel-vision) in order to one shot someone. Unfortunately for us, the charge mechanic is not required to use at all and rather than being a limiter, its a bonus for the Sniper.

Players that are head-shot from behind are expecting to see a Spy in their death-cam, but they sometimes see (more often that we'd like) a Sniper with a rifle. Goal: Increase the effective combat range to something more reasonable and expected with the Sniper Changes: Headshot damage is now subjected to distance ramp-up effects Headshots below 1200 world units do normal (non-crit) damage

Yeah ramp up sometimes might be a good fix, i remember a hero-TPS game and the meta was sniper rifles and fast characters (even if the character is not made for sniper rifle use) , it really screws up new players and veterans like me.

i would generally agree, though for what it's worth, i do think that most people tackle it the wrong way. you mostly just gotta be careful that you don't inadvertently buff the hell out of hardscoping and medic.

if someone sacraficed social life (and much, much more) to be good at piss manning then I say let the class stay as is. if you tweak sniper rifle mechanics, you'd be taking away the only accomplishment these people have. you don't want to drive them to commit sewerslide, right?
