That was actually the best part of the second one. It gave Kylo Ren more depth as a character by showing his ambition and not just being a Darth Vader ripoff. If you think about it, Palpatine wasn’t that big a character either in the original trilogy. The rest of the movie was doggie doo though.

First movie had some stumbles, second movie burned everything to the ground, then the third movie was JJ trying to repair the broken damages. That was KEY to the intrigue within the new trilogy. If you kill your big bad in the second film and then reveal the secret of the big bad in the trailer for your 3rd movie....... youre doing it wrong. Snoke was the most interesting part of the new trilogy in The Force Awakens and they cast him asside, then panicked afterwards and tried to hype up Palpatine like that was the plan all along. Adam Drucer recently confirmed what we allready knew, that Snoke was not planned as Palpatine

I think snoke is a conscious individual with limited free will. Palpatine created him and influences his mind and decision making through the force. And the stuff about “he’s a couple hundred years old, and witness the rise and fall of the empire” is false memories implanted into his brain by palpatine. He has some free will but is also a puppet simultaneously. JJ retconned it in 9 but this is basically the lore now.
