The way that Frank Gorshin's Riddler could instantly switch from hysterical laughter to quietly threatening and back, made him seem dangerously unstable, and to me the most frightening of the villains. There was a novel published around the time of this movie, with the same quartet of villains: "Batman vs. the Fearsome Foursome."
@jamesoblivionАй бұрын
Yes! We all think of the manic Frank Gorshin Riddler, but it was those moments of quiet menace, and the jarring bipolar switches, that made him such a great villain. He didn't have to pose a physical threat, he was psychologically intimidating because he seemed truly unhinged.

Great review! I am 68 years old and I was nice to see young people who can appreciate the Batman (the Light Knight) that I grew up with. In the 1940's they filmed 2 Batman and Robin Serials. Serials were a movie told in multiple chapters that were shown at theaters, one chapter each week. Each chapter ended in a cliffhanger that put the main characters in life threatening danger. This was to get you to come back to the theater the next week to see how and if they survive in the next chapter.

I was 8 when this movie came out. The Batman show started in January, 1966 as a mid-season replacement show so it was a short season. They started filming this as soon as the first season ended and it was in theatres starting July 30. So it was filmed, edited and released with a few months. I've loved lots of versions of Batman but, because this was my introduction to the character, I think this is still my favorite. The only thing missing was Julie Newmar playing Catwoman. Though she played Catwoman in the first season and in some later episodes, she opted to take another movie offer instead of this one.

I was born in 1970, just a few years after the series ended, but it was my favorite show at age 3! I used to run down the hall, imitating Batman and Robin as they ran toward the camera at the very beginning of the opening credits and wearing a cape! Anyway, I can tell you a few interesting things about the series, if I can decide where to begin: 1. For the first two seasons, the episodes of Batman consisted mostly of 2-part "cliffhanger" episodes; at the end of part 1, Batman and Robin (or just one of them, or occasionally another significant character) would be captured by the villain and put into some kind of "death trap," with the narrator (William Dozier, who also produced the series) reading a captioned suspenseful message asking how the captives would get out of their predicament. At the beginning of part 2, Batman would (usually) escape by his own skills or devices and free Robin (if they were both in the trap), or by sheer dumb luck. When I say "cliffhanger episode," I'm referring to both parts together. A couple of cliffhanger episodes were three episodes long! 2. Burt Ward's manhood was thought to bulge in his Robin costume too much for the censors' comfort, so they had to put some kind of padding into his costume to counter the bulge. 😳 3. Burgess Meredith, who played the Penguin (and Mickey Goldmill, Rocky's trainer in the first three movies), had quit smoking more than 20 years before he started playing the Penguin, and while playing the role, the smoke would often get caught in his throat and throw him into a coughing fit. Rather than ruin takes due to coughing, he developed the Penguin's signature laugh and squawk to cover it up. 4. Caesar Romero refused to shave off his signature mustache when playing the Joker. If you look closely at his face, you can see his mustache underneath his white makeup. 5. One time when Frank Gorshin (the Riddler) was unavailable to play the part due to commitment to another project, a cliffhanger episode was filmed with the Ridder being played by John Astin, who played Gomez Addams on the series The Addams Family. Unsurprisingly, Gorshin was furious when he found out about this. IMO, although Astin was fantastic as Gomez Addams, his portrayal of the Riddler left something to be desired. However, Gorshin still played the Ridder a few more times before the series was cancelled. 6. Carolyn Jones, who played Morticia Addams in The Addams Family, played a villainess named Marsha, Queen of Diamonds, in two cliffhanger episodes. 7. Catwoman was originally played for the first two seasons by Julie Newmar, an actress well known for her shapely figure and sexy legs. She would've reprised the role in the movie, but she had suffered a back injury, so the role went to Lee Meriwether (a former Miss America winner in 1955, and the secretary of Buddy Ebsen's character in the crime drama Barnaby Jones). Season Two began after the movie was released, and Newmar continued her role. When Season Three was approaching, Newmar landed a part on a Western titled "Mackenna's Gold," which took up a lot of her time, so the role of Catwoman went to singer-actress Eartha Kitt (very appropriate name) for the third and final season of the series. 8. Catwoman wasn't the only character to be played by three different actors. Mr. Freeze, who appeared three times in the whole series, was played first by George Sanders (who voiced Shere Khan the tiger in Disney's The Jungle Book), then by actor/director Otto Preminger (who voiced the elf king in Rankin/Bass's version of The Hobbit, 1977), and finally by Eli Wallach (who starred in "Baby Dolls" and "The Misfits," two movies that were popular in their day, although they were not only before your times, they were before MY time)! Lol 9. Some Batman villains, like Two-Face, Poison Ivy, and Scarecrow, never appeared in the series, but there were several non-canonical villains in the series who were played by well-known actors and actresses. Among these were (a super genius played by Vincent Price), (a Western-themed outlaw, a parody of Shane, played by Cliff Robertson, who played Peter Parker's Uncle Ben in the first Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire), (an amnesiac Egyptology professor who, went hit on the head, believes himself to be the reincarnation of the Egyptian pharaoh, played [quite well, I might add] by Victor Bueno), and the Mad Hatter (based on the redheaded "impostor" Mad Hatter in the comics, who is obsessed with collecting the hats of the jurors who convicted him of a crime and sent him to prison, including Batman, whose cowl he wants the most, played by actor David Wayne). Ok, so the last one is actually canonical. My bad.

The character had evolved beyond this point in the comics by the 80s. So when movie trailer for the 1989 film came out, we were all blown away. Tim Burton's Batman was something we hadn't seen before. Since then, it has become the template of how Batman is done in the movies. The closest we ever got to Batman 66 from then on were the Schumacher films, which I think deserve more love. Especially Batman Forever.

@jamesoblivionАй бұрын
In the comics, Batman started out very grim and gritty in 1939, but soon grew more lighthearted, and by the 1950s, he was having a lot of fights with goofy aliens and robots. In the 1970s, Denny O'Neill returned the character to his roots, bringing back the gritty tone, sending Robin off to college, and re-establishing Batman as world class detective and a grim lone avenger. Villains like Joker and Two-Face, who hadn't been used in years, returned with a vengeance, deadlier than ever. That trend continued into the 1980s with the gritty Batman stories of writers like Frank Miller and Alan Moore...and with Batman getting a new Robin, only for him to be murdered by Joker, which would fuel his vengeance for decades to come. It's an interesting cyclic evolution for Batman, from dark, to silly, and back around to dark.

I got a real kick out of your positive reaction to this off-kilter classic. As a kid, I was a fanatical part of the "Batmania" craze generated by the TV series (which you would probably enjoy very much, especially the first two seasons), and remember the joy of seeing this movie in a theater packed with other wildly enthusiastic kids. As an adult, I appreciate it in a different way, savoring the absolutely deadpan humor and how the actors play it so painfully straight (except for the bad guys, who were allowed to go wild). The oldest screen version of Batman would be the two chapter serials, "Batman" and "Batman and Robin", which were released to theaters in the 40s and are now available on DVD or KZbin. They were so ridiculous, yet played so straight, that it's thought they were a big inspiration on the TV series and its brand of humor. By the way, many reactors wonder why Nicolas Cage talks the way he does as Big Daddy in "Kickass" -- I'm pretty sure he's imitating West's stilted delivery as Batman.

The series was gold. Two episodes a week (Wednesdays and Thursdays, if I remember correctly), most of them two-parters. Same Bat-time. Same Bat-station. Only a few of the villains (one-offs and recurring) were sub-par. It's amazing how big it was -- there was Batman merch everywhere (I had my fair share). Making it campy was so genius that even now, almost sixty years later, it stands out. (That Caesar Romero wouldn't shave his moustache and they simply put his white Joker face paint over it just adds even more flavor.)

Most of the season 1 episodes were based on stories from the Batman comic books. In seasons 2 & 3, the TV writers mostly created their own new villains, a lot of whom were pretty bland -- arguably except for King Tut and Egghead.

The 60's Batman series was actually a spoof of 1950's Batman comics; the first two Seasons consisted entirely of two-part stories, with Part One ending in cliffhangers; celebrities lined up to play "special guest villains, with stars ranging from Academy Award winning actress Shelly Winters to Liberace, to even guest star vigilante Kato played by Bruce Lee; if I had to pick one story from each season to recommend ,they'd be: 1. Season 1, Eps. 5 &6...The Joker Is Wild/Batman Is Riled. 2. Season Two, Eps. 35&36... That Darn Catwoman/Scat Darn Catwoman (with special guest villain's sidekick Pussycat, played by Leslie Gore ["It's My Party And I'll Cry If I Want To"]; Season Three, Ep. 1...Enter Batgirl, Exit Penguin (by this time, most of the stories were single-part episodes), and Ep. 2...Ring Around The Riddler (with a cameo from Special Guest Villainess the Siren, played by Joan Collins[Dynasty]).

This movie was made waaaay before WB had anything to do with DC Comics. Not only did 20th Century Fox make the movie, they also made the TV show- for CBS. And with the zillion and one guest stars- half of whom were dead by the time DVDs came out- all having signed their contracts long before anyone ever conceived of home video, there were many of us who thought they'd never get all the royalties on the TV show sorted out in our lifetimes. (The movie was out on DVD by the early 2000s, but we had Blu-Ray by the time the TV series came out) The final obstacle was waiting out William Dozier's grand daughter, who had vowed never to sign off on a home video version of the show.

The 1966 BATMAN (both movie and television show) was inspired both by the two Batman chapter serials -- BATMAN (1943) and BATMAN AND ROBIN (1949) -- and by the cheesy Silver-Age comics of the 1950s and early '60s. Batman actually started out pretty dark in the comics, being heavily influenced by such pulp heroes as The Shadow. In the early comics, Batman carried a gun and wasn't above killing his opponents.

When I was a little kid this was like Shakespeare. You should watch the making of the show. You will see just how big this show was in the 60s. Adam West was loved his fans so much he made sure he slept with all of them. If you want to see how great Adam was watch the a scene from the show where Bruce Wayne talks to Batman over the phone.

Another fun quirk of the 60s series was the tilted camera for the villain's lair and fight scenes. Hope you have opportunity to watch some tv episodes... Same Bat Time Same Bat Channel!

This version was a classic…campy and fun. Note…there were 3 different actors who played Catwoman…Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt and Lee Merriweather. You guys should also check out the TV series “The Green Hornet” which had the same general production style and featured martial arts legend Bruce Lee as “Kato”.

It's good to see more people reacting to older movies.

Batman, Batman, Batman... West is the ultimate campy Batman.

Go back and check Batman Forever - Robin says, "Holy metal!" and Batman looks strangely disturbed - until Robin explains they're standing on metal with holes in it. Definite Easter egg for this version.

Of course she's Catwoman - even as Kitka she's wearing a leopard spotted outfit.

@SnoopersGonnaSnoop actually Batman started out as a dark character when he was first created back in the 1930s and actually killed people but then people started complaining about him being too dark for kids so DC comics went and made him family friendly which led to the 1960s Batman tv series starring Adam West. It wasn't until the release of the dark knight returns graphic novel created by Frank Miller in the 1980s that Batman became a dark character again.

Actually during the late 60's after the Batman t.v. series ended, the Batman comic books under Denny O'Neil's writing returned Batman to his more serious dark roots.

Having a movie budget gave the producers a chance to make the Batcopter and Batboat, footage of which was added to subsequent episodes of the series, to increase the production value.

I was five years old when I went to see this in the theater with my friends. After the movie was over we agreed the film was pretty good but that shark definitely looked fake.

I grew up in the 80s in the UK with this series on tv weekday mornings before school. I saw this film on tv about a year later, and have loved it since. This also includes my favourite version of Joker and Riddler. Thanks to Batman Returns, i have a different favourite Catwoman and Penguin. In the actual series Catwoman was played by a few different actresses, most often by Julie Newmar. Cesar Romero and Burgess Meredith always played Joker and Penguin. Frank Gorshin who was in this played Riddler in the majority of his episodes.

The TV show was so big that they filmed the movie between the 1st and 2nd season. You should check out the series. Check out Pop Goes the Joker. Might surprise you. You mentioned the Sinister Six. My 1966 Sinister Six for Batman would be. Penguin, Riddler, the Joker, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, and King Tutt.

The sixties Batman is a combination of wacky fifties Batman with the visual aesthetic of post-1964 "New Look" Batman. Then, after the campy Batman series was cancelled, Denny O'Neill and Neal Adams revamped comics Batman to make him darker and more serious. Then in 1986, Frank Miller revamped the character again to make him even more grimdark and gritty.

I use to watch the show when I was a kid. Didn't think much of the tone of Batman at that time and the theme was stuck in my head. This movie here is like a tv show split to 3 parts as you grow up and re-watching it. Adam West will always be known as the light knight Batman.

I'm so lucky I had this on DVD when I was in first grade in the early 2000s. I grew up on several Batmans Kevin Conroy Adam West's, And as a guilty pleasure George Clooney and Val kilmer, (we still had those ones on VHS) Christian Bale of course was the one I was saw in theaters as a kid.
