Design concept definitely counts for a lot, people will certainly overlook a dungeon's weak or unfun attributes if it's a really cool concept. In the case of Jabu Jabu, I think that people remember having to carry around Ruto and get very annoyed, especially since if you drop her in the water you have to start all over again. Escort missions, especially ones designed back then, are often ridiculed. Funnily enough, Ruto is basically serving the role of the Iron Ball from the previous game's seventh dungeon, Eagle Tower.

I believe other pros to the Water Temple that helped save it from scoring last are the visuals and music. Those whom find themselves stuck, lost, and or tripping over their own boots will be a lot more forgiving when the moment-to-moment exploration is at least easy on the eyes and ears. Jabu Jabu's Belly is just... uncomfortable to be in. You're in a giant, smelly fish and the visuals, music, and sound effects reflect as much. It may be a fairly simple dungeon and you won't get lost for too long (if at all), but what little time you spend there you'll be wishing you were literally anywhere else- especially after coming from the much more beautiful Zora's domain.

@queenypie45432 жыл бұрын
I was among the people who voted for Jabu Jabu as their least favorite, and it really boils down to one thing: it's not fun. When you remember that the platform in the middle tower rises up, and you remember to go back to the hole on the 2nd floor where you meet Ruto, the water temple is actually very straight forward. Jabu Jabu's Belly though? It's not that complicated, but carrying Ruto sucks, even after all these years, not helped by the arbitrary times the game yeets her back to her starting point. Then there's falling down the right hole which has no good way of remembering where it was. Even past all that, the dungeon is mostly dull, music is forgettable, mini-boss is annoying, boss is annoying, and for its first 3d debut (and last until Wind Waker like 8 years later), the boomerang is sorely underutilized. As for the other dungeons, I'm not too surprised, besides the Forest Temple. Personally I find the forest temple kinda drags until you get the bow. Fire, Spirit, and Shadow temple are all pretty good, Deku and Dodongo are both great; Ganon's tower is sadly forgettable despite being the final dungeon. The ice temple sucks because ice physics, but it's saved by being mercifully short, while Gerudo Training grounds is kinda neat in theory but lacks in execution. With songs, I'm disappointed that Requiem and Nocturne are so low. I'm surprised sun song got ranked worst, but I guess if any song had to take the fall, it'd be that one. Ofc people like playing adult link, because you can do 95% of what child link can do, and then several unique things. The bow is an upgraded slingshot, the hookshot is basically just a better boomerang, and nothing else matters; the only thing that kinda sucks to lose is crawl spaces. Aaand another game to give my weird opinions, this oughta be fun~

I don't know if I'd call any of the dungeons ''bad'', per se. I think Jabu-Jabu's Belly is the closest to thing to a bad dungeon because I see what they were going for and it didn't really work, in my opinion. Jabu-Jabu was more annoying than anything else. The first two dungeons work because they're the introduction to 3D space in Zelda, and they were never going to be anything other than straightforward. The meat of the dungeons comes as adult Link.. The Water Temple is easily the most well-designed dungeon, it's a masterpiece. The only problem (and, yes, it's a big one) is the switching between boots in the N64 version. However, the dungeon in the 3DS version is arguably the greatest dungeon in Zelda history, IMO. The Forest Temple and Spirit Temple are next, they're not as intricate as Water, but they're just a lot of fun to explore and figure out. Fire Temple is fine, nothing special but still a good dungeon. Then, Shadow Temple, is totally mediocre as far as I'm concerned. It's super linear and basically a gauntlet of enemies with minimal puzzle-solving. It gets points for atmosphere, the boss and the way the dungeon item is implemented, but in terms of design it's just completely meh. I don't really consider Ganon's Tower a dungeon in the strict sense. My ranking would be: 1. Water Temple (Next two are really close) 2. Forest Temple 3. Spirit Temple 4. Fire Temple 5. Inside the Deku Tree 6. Dodongo's Cavern 7. Shadow Temple 8. Jabu-Jabu's Belly

Honestly, what made the Water temple okay in the 3DS remake weren't even the controls. All they did was add a little 1 second camera pan to the passage that most of us missed in the original, being in the middle structure when the water rises, right underneath the floating platform. That was the key that locked us out of progress and that was a very elegant solution.

I don’t think I ever thought about what my least favorite dungeon is in this game but I would definitely still say the Water Temple after putting some thought into it for the reason that, even if you’ve replayed OOT and the 3DS version multiple times, you may sometimes have a bad run of some dungeons where you’re thinking too far ahead and miss something as a result and I believe the water temple is the worst dungeon that can happen in. if you missed just one area you most likely have to spend time bringing the water level to where you need it for that area, and then spend more time resetting the water level back to what it was before so you can continue your progress whereas in every other dungeon if you missed something you can just run over to where you need to and get there relatively quickly and then run back to where you left off just as quickly apart from a select few situations

Many people say the Forest Temple is their favorite (myself included) because it's the turning point in the game when the game gets a lot more challenging and also resembles Link's maturation into an adult. In fact, I was also anticipating JJB to be the least favorite as I found it much easier than DC and rather forgettable dungeon. Although it's purely my speculation, I'm wondering if the developers specifically designed these two dungeons like this back to back because they wanted to express to the player that sudden rise in difficulty between JJB and Forest Temple to prepare the player for the rest of the game. I definitely remember playing this game as a young kid the best moment was conquering the forest temple and the first dungeon as adult Link. Edit: As for the Water Temple, it doesn't surprise me at all it scored higher than JJB because players would rather be annoyed at a very difficult dungeon than a ridiculously easy dungeon because of the sense of accomplishment. That and many Zelda fans probably agree Dark Link is arguably as epic as the final fight with Ganon.

The water temple is one of the best dungeons of 3D zeldas. All the hate comes from people not used to take notes.

I understand the poor UI choices, but it was 1998. It was so well designed that it made look linear the rest of the dungeons (aside from the Fire Temple).

I won't lie- I really didn't like the opening stages of the Ice Caverns at all, but just the sheer fantasy magical stillness of the wolf's den at the end really does make up for everything else. It was such an unexpected, peaceful yet somber area to run into (that I wished I never had to leave) that it became one of my favorite areas in all of Zelda

Just a side note I thought inside the Deku Tree was a fantastic introduction as far as what to expect in any subsequent dungeons.

I think the Fire Temple is so cool. So cool in fact, that I would play through the whole game up to the Fire Temple as a kid JUST to play it. I love the mystery behind the architecture and how none of it is actually Goron related. Makes you wonder about the true lore of Death Mountain and if Volvagia is even a villain. Super cool temple, I like ones that make you wonder.

Ive never seemed to have an issue in the water temple, I always got through it just as easy as any of the others

JJB is the worst dungeon, not even close. The whole cave is a fucking escort mission. That's why it's so low on the list. NO ONE likes escort missions.

I'm surprised there were no statistics for the bosses. If you were to revisit OoT I would love to see the stats for the bosses, dungeon items and non-ocarina songs. Would be awesome to see a similar format plus at least the bosses for Majora's Mask (or any other zelda game really).

Great video! Do you think you can do this with Majora’s Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess too?

People always say Water Temple, but the worst to me is actually Ganon's Castle first half.

Pls do the dungeons rankings for the rest of the 3D Zelda games, I'd be super interested in a Twilight Princess one since all the dungeons in that are great

At first I thought Dodongo's was my least favorite but I rethought it because I have fond memories thinking of the weird civilization that built the armos and thinking back to how link to the past had armos and what connected the two games at that point. I think ironically the worst dungeon is actually my favorite: ganon's castle is simultaneously loved and hated because it's a culmination of your journey and climax and signals the end and boundaries of the game, when you actually don't want to see the limitations of your adventure.

I would love to see Majorca’s Mask if this. Also, I didn’t really have any problems with The Water Temple. I understand the constant changing of boots is kind of annoying, but not enough to take away from the level.

I think there's two major factors to consider with this (at least with Water Temple) The first you touched on, the 3DS Remake helped a LOT of the things working against the Water Temple, just like Wind Waker HD got cleaned up a lot when that came out (I quit orig Wind Waker multiple times once I got to the triforce quest, NGL) There's also the modern internet age. I was playing OoT on the GameCube release, so it wasn't like, "Internet isn't a thing" by any means, but guides and video walkthroughs weren't nearly what they are nowadays (and my parents had shitty internet so video walkthroughs probably wouldn't have helped anyway, haha) I remember having a fucking fantastic walkthrough from GameFAQs my brother had found for me, and I do enjoy water temple knowing what I need to do, but I don't know that I'd enjoy it nearly as much going into it blind and without a resource to check like that.

I'm thinking the warp songs mostly being ranked lower is because they're mostly so short and underutilized in the soundtrack that they don't leave much of an impression. Bolero of Fire being the exception is pretty ironic considering the theme to the first Legend of Zelda was originally intended to be Maurice Ravel's Bolero before Kondo realized it wasn't in the public domain yet.

Honestly, requim of spirit would be my favorite, but song of storms is just so good

I think the inside joke of water temple being the worst also came from an issue that could occur where, if done in an "incorrect" order, you'd end up with a locked door and no keys and no way to get a key. Idk if they fixed this in the 3DS version though.

Honestly, I think the last time I played through the game, I finished the water temple within a day, it wasn't that hard. The other dungeons, I get lost in a lot though. And I'm surprised so many other people share the same opinion about Jabu Jabu's dungeon, it's kinda neat but there's too many annoying things in it like Ruto and constantly getting stunned. My absolute favourite song is Bolero of Fire, I used to just spam that song and not warp so I could listen to the entire thing. Loved the look of the red tunic. I liked the Fire Temple (except for the annoying fire maze), but it did make me feel kinda down because of the whole prisoner thing, but it wasn't as spooky as the Shadow Temple or well. Very interesting to see other people's thoughts and opinions about the game! I'm enjoying these polls.

The water temple was so annoying because when you played the song inside the tower, it wasn't very obvious that the block rising in the water created the entrance to the secret underwater room.

I think video essayists also turned people's opinions on the Water Temple around, because looking into it shows a surprising amount of depth (no pun intended), with a few bad mechanics coloring it the wrong way.

The water temple is actually one of the best. Beat it on n64 and 3ds.

My least favorite was the fire temple, once you get up to the very top it's like walking on a tight rope and since I was playing it on the Wii U, to me the emulation port isn't that good when it comes to controls so when I was playing it on the Wii U it was like riding a tricycle on a tightrope
@Shadbraw2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s pretty difficult to control Link with the Wii U controller, especially when you have a path only 3 feet wide to walk across.

Weighing in on the discussion - Shadow Temple is the most tedious BS ever. Random unannounced ambushes, just having to wait your turn to damage the enemy, dozens of random drops to your death, very little direction at some points, I grew up with this game and have tons of nostalgia for it and even I had to say thanks but no thanks. Hyrule is still waiting to be saved in that file

I think you should redo the water temple n64 vs 3ds. And I think you should redo all the songs and do it both based off of just melody and just usability then average them for overall and show all three!

...Hold on....Wait....The Ice Cavern is in 4th place!?? Except for the music, it feels so unfinished and basic.This cannot be. The Spirit Temple is behing the Ice Cavern? How?? I am truly shocked. The rest of the list makes sense but this, it's absurd.

Forest Temple was one of the few only dungeons in Zelda ever that made me think I was softlocked, making me restart the whole game so yeah not exactly optimal design imo edit: for context I was a young kid who was stupid but still not sure where to go I tried figuring it out for so long my 3DS went red battery

Dungeons: Gameplay for the Forest Temple is good, but the music really gets on my nerves! I'd say I like Water Temple best of all, believe it or not. I figured it out in less than two days all by myself. When my cousin told me it took him months to figure out even with the guidebook, I guess that made me really proud. Platform: First time I completed it was on my Gamecube. Link: I like Adult Link too. Only wish he didn't outgrow the boomerang. I can understand the slingshot, knife, wooden shield, and sticks, but not the boomerang. Tunic: Give me the classic green tunic any day. Arrows: I like the Fire Arrows too. Songs: I always liked Saria's Song best of all. It had a sort of exciting and uplifting Celtic vibe to it that I really liked.
