Tip: I always grab a bunch of sticks and twigs roughly 12” long. Then I stick them into my snow cave all around the top and sides of the exterior. That way when I’m digging out the interior whenever I come to the end of a stick I stop digging. This ensures that all my walls are about 12” thick. 👍

Just a tip. When it's cold enough to see your own breath, you should not blow up your bed pad with your own breath. The moisture that you blew into it, will now crystallize and will make the mat cold. Most times there is a pump or pump with the bag it comes in will attach to push air threw.

Having slept in a Qunizee in my youth. -32C, I know this experience. It was hard to tell if you had something covering the entrance or was it open? Spruce bows blocking the entrance would have added insulation to your design or put something to mostly block the entrance. You can poke small air holes through the ceiling or leeward side for additional ventilation.

when i was a kid the best winter activity before i learned to snowboard was tunneling. myself and a dozen other kids would steal our parents heavy duty spaded shovels and garden shovels and go to a parking lot that was plowed and dig into the mountains the plows made. idk if people would believe or could imagine how elaborate our tunnel systems really got. it would be 8 tunnels leading to a 4ft high dome room and a twisty slide from top to bottom that never really worked out. even as kids we took collapses seriously and luckily no one ever got hurt badly.

Spent 24 years in the Army roughing it under most extreme conditions all over the world. No more spending five days in a snow cave at an 11,000 ft pass in blizzard conditions. These days I prefer to enjoy my camping experiences.

Cold because your floor is lowest point, when I built my quinzee we dug down first and then in and up to the floor so the cold air stayed lower. Also we used trekking poles punched in to the mount to determine the thickness of the roof so it is of proper strength/stability. It ends up being pretty warm but the inside of the roof tended to drip a lot over the night. We also had 3 dudes in ours lol.

If you Poke foot-long sticks around and through the whole shelter like a pin cushion ..you hollow out the inside until you see the sticks, that way the shelter wall is the same thickness all around..great video, job well done

Built a Quinzhee in my backyard in Erie, Pa in 1994. It was -22 F. and my 12 year old daughter and I slept in it all night in comfort with winter sleeping bags and Thermarest pads. First we built it B/C she wanted to see what it would look like. Then, to my surprise she wanted to sleep in it. I put two 3 season mummy bags together for her and used my -5 F.winter bag. Great experience for both of us bring our 1st time in a Quinzhee. We were remarkably warm with inside temperature at about +5 F.

Great video Mav. New subscriber here. Just a tip: make sure the door is lower than the inside where you sleep. Not only for more heat while you sleep but for any of those propane fumes to ventilate as well. Propane gas is heavier than air.

You should study the winter snow shelters that the military does. You create a raised platform of snow so that the cold air that creeps stays below you. Much warmer. Great to see your choice in buddy camping. Hannah is A1 in my book. Always game for an adventure.
