I just bought a new 2017 Legacy from Peninsula Subaru. I drove around everywhere after this little 4" dump we had. On my way home from work that night there were a good 6 accidents along Hwy-16 on the way to Port Orchard. I had no problems at all. No loss of traction anywhere. I drove 40mph with complete confidence, and no problems on any of the hills near my house. I also went up a big hill by my house, then drove down on purpose and hit the brakes to see how well it would stop half way down the hill. From 25mph to stop, there was no slip at all. I literally stopped half way down the hill, and it never changed direction from where I was pointed. My '05 Corolla could never do that. I'm sold!!! This is without a doubt, the best AWD system on the market, right alongside Audi Quattro. btw, I think the Jeep was just waiting for you to come down, before he went up. That Wrangler could definitely get up that hill.

A vehicle is only as good as its tires. If that Jeep has nearly-bald tires on (which many do), then its just about useless in snow.

In the Jeep you have to stop and put it into 4wd and lock the diffs, then undo it after the climb, that's a huge pain.
@Condor1970
@Condor1970 8 жыл бұрын
On a standard production Jeep, you do not have to stop to shift into 4wd. Simply travelling under 25mph is all that's needed for safe shifting of the transfer case. The Wrangler comes with either a limited slip rear diff, or an auto locking diff, and you do not need to do anything. The front diff is an open diff, and the whole vehicle also uses traction control to shift torque between wheels for traction. Also for driving in snow, there basically no need to ever use 4-Lo gearing to drive around. 4-Lo is strictly used for off road steep climbing and/or towing a heavy load short distances.

I know its kind of far from your dealership, but if you really want to impress the Seattlites, take that car up Queen Anne Hill. All the way, bottom to top. No "running start". ...and then... Go down to the waterfront and climb Marion from Alaskan Way (or however close you can get to the water anymore) to 6th. Feel free to use the tires of your choice. IF you can make it up those two hills, in the snow, in your Subaru, THEN we (or at least, I) will be sold on the benefits of AWD. Good luck.

I saw a note on the Impreza from Subaru saying that when in snow, going uphill or down, you should turn off your auto traction control (logo of car skidding). The service mgr at Peninsula Subaru and a mechanic both agreed with this. If you don't shut it off, the computer (of course) will think you're losing control and start braking.

C’mon Seattle, a dusting of snow is nothing. Come over here to Leavenworth where we get 5-6 feet of snow every winter and navigate that into Wenatchee everyday. We have to put our Outback into Xmode just to get up our private road and into our garage during the winter months. When the whimps in Seattle get 2-3 inches of snow, the city goes insane and schools are closed.
@anthonyjulson8840
@anthonyjulson8840 3 ай бұрын
I remember similar growing up in northeast Washington. We essentially had an ice storm, and should have closed the school. Long story short, bus driver ended up sideways in the road and kept it rubber side down thankfully. As soon as she got it whooped, she called the bus garage to come put chains on, and lit herself a smoke. I thought she was going to beat the school superintendent for not closing or even delaying school. When he showed up.
@Doc1855

@@anthonyjulson8840 we have never had to chain up with the Outback, nor have we ever had to put studded snow tires on our (my wife’s) Outback. We always put 300# of sand bags over the rear axle of our 4WD pickup during the winter. Previously we Always had to put studded snow tires on every other AWD vehicle we’ve ever owned. Once on a great while the school buses around our area are changed up in the winter, but that’s seldom.

@@anthonyjulson8840 Didn’t you read what I said? I said that we’ve never had to chain up our Outback, nor have we ever had to put studded snow tires on it. We live in a very mountainous area of north central Washington state and we get 5-7 feet of snow every winter. We live 5 miles up in the mountains from town (1/2 an hour to the city) on a private road that we have to plow and maintain ourselves. We have to put the Subie in X mode just to get up our road and into our garage. If we have to go to Seattle and the passes require chains, then we have to comply.

@Doc1855 I did read what you said. I apologize for not making my point clear. Subaru is such bad ass AWD, you don't need chains. If you feel like you do, stay home. I understand Snoqualmie pass, and whatever the other one is may require chains. Thats a different ball of wax all together.

What I like about Subaru vehicles is that they have lots of glass all around you, so great visibility. The beltline on Subaru cars is lower than on most other cars so you can actually 'SEE' the ground in front of your vehicle where you are driving, and you don't have this high hood in front of your face preventing you from seeing the path directly ahead of your vehicle. That Jeep at 2:30 has worn out nearly-bald tires, so of course there is no way he's going to get up any snow covered hill.

The all season tires did amazing in unplowed snow uphill in the one blizzard we had last May. Do you think I will be ok in the mountains with the stock Continental all season tires? A bit disingenuous not to acknowledge at 4:31 that the jeep did in fact make it up the hill. When he was initially spinning wheels he was probably trying to go up in 2wd then shifted into 4wd high, then no problem. I've owned a Jeep Wrangler unlimited and just traded it in for a Subaru Impreza I know both and both are great in snow. Wrangler wasn't practical for me though which is why I traded it. And as many here have said tires are everything. FWD with snow tires will beat AWD with all season or summer tires every time.

Well a little self serving bull shit here and there. All wheel or actual 4 wheel drive will almost always be better in marginal driving conditions. Even with tires designed for more summer types of driving. I do like Subaru's as they are quite reliable and built well I have owned a couple. Four to six inches of snow is about the limit as unplowed roads and the plastic front end of that and most vehicles nowadays don't play well together. Ground clearance underneath where shift linkages, brakes and radiators freezing up can be fun too! Have fun playing.

better to petition for them and fight for change, safety is better than some ruts in the road, that's why many places stopped using them to save the roads from additional wear but look at the problems trying to save money causes! We have to have winter tires by 1st of December by law but you can install them by 1st of November if the weather is bad or even in October again weather dependent. Right through till 1st of April. So much safer especially for the ice.
