I have a lot of unfinished projects too. I used to feel bad about that but I think it''s normal for a lot of artists. If the unfinished work is on paper I put it in my collage folder. If it is a canvas or board I just paint over it letting the energy and texture from the unfinished piece become the foundation for the new.

I have several pieces of unfinished works put away. I’ve come to realize that over time (days or even years) I do come back to a piece because I have a new sense of purpose for it.. like maybe a new skill or technique that the piece needed and I have since acquired or a particular challenge I’m now ready to tackle that maybe I wasn’t really ready for at the time of starting the piece or just a clearer vision for the finish. I have found that each unfinished piece will speak to me when I’m ready to ‘dance’ with it again. Sometimes my lack of sufficient interest in coming back to complete a piece is me saying ‘not interested anymore’ so I respect that and carry on. Thank you for your insights and creative talk ❤

I particularly enjoyed the graphitint swatching. I'd be interested to see what you do with them! Also since you asked about ideas for winter videos - I'd like to see tips on using fineliners, and if you ever use charcoal or tinted charcoal pencils that would be fun to see too! Thanks for the video, I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with your content and art this winter.

Swatching videos are so relaxing to watch- plus, it's how I see what colors/sets I may want to try which saves me money on supply mistakes so thanks for that. I'd love to see you swatch your DS and gouache too and labeling them or including their numbers so we can get the ones we like if offered open stock would be helpful also. Sometimes I forget where I am when swatching too. Try swatching color #1 and setting it aside, then swatch color #2 and place it back in the box in space #1, that creates a gap to help you see what color is next. Continue down the row to the end and then simply move all the colors in the box to their correct position and replace color #1 in its original place. Hope that's helpful.

I love swatching videos. I have the graphitint watercolor set and the pencils. They are lovely in landscapes. I also have the neocolor 2. Just bought some neocolor 1 and I just adore them. They work great with so many mediums. I too do not always finish art projects. I find working in my small sketchbooks helps me finish an art piece in record time. When I feel fatiqued or unwell I grab my Tombow and Ecoline Markers for a quick sketch. Also I use my derwent or micron pens to outline or put in fine details. Looks amazing. 😊

Art is seen as a hobby in modern days. There was a time when fine artists' lives literally depended on selling or patronage. You have many media to dabble in. Set hard deadlines for yourself like you are the boss and life depends on it. When sickness or family needs you, that is the exception. Personally, I am a watercolor, mental heath, hobbyist.

I absolutely adore water soluble graphite and i have it in pencils, sticks and powder. I NEED the graphitint paint pans...already have the pencils! I have a hard time staying motivated as well..I sometimes lose interest halfway through a project...or like you said, life happens...then i find it difficult to get back to it. I really enjoy your channel and love that you are into so many different media. That is right up my alley. As for the snow...keep it with you! Im Canadian but fortunately I live in a part of the country that doesn't get much snow..it looks pretty but so awful to navigate through and deal with. Have a great day in your snowy wonderland! I look forward to your next video!

I was thinking about your comments about motivation. I am no where near as experienced or professional as you so please factor that into my comments I am taking art classes at my local community college. I often find it difficult to stay motivated on those projects because they take more time so I do start stop. But I am finding that what brings me joy is doing small paintings (got the idea from one of your earlier videos about the book One Painting A Day 😊). I do small mixed media works in an inexpensive sketchbook which frees me up to experiment and not pressure myself to strive for perfection. Even if I only do some ink doodles for 15 mins it keeps me in the habit so I never have to get up momentum to do art again. Of course in my case I do have to be careful to not use up all my creative energy on my fun sketchbook and then not have anything left for my more academic art class work. Btw I love your chatty vlogs and I love swatching. I also really enjoyed your chatty “paint with me” live stream with pastels you did a few weeks (months?) ago.

I have about 12 unfinished Gnome paintings. And that's a shame because it took me hours to come up with their look and design. Having a channel to share some of those paintings has helped me as well... the desire to share has pushed me to sit down and finish it in one go. But I do understand you and feel bad for my Gnomes in that pile that will most likely never get done. I did share 2 or 3 though 🤭

Thanks for the video! It was strange seeing all that snow-stuff where you are - here in Florida I've just spent the last week cutting back some shrubs by the house that had 'got away' over summer I was working in temperatures in the high 70s/low 80s range and, funnily enough, there wasn't a flake of snow to be seen. I'm not normally a fan of swatching videos but I did watch the part of this one where you were swatching out the Derwent materials - I'd love to see them being put through their paces in a actual sketch - either just using the Derwent items or alternatively as a mixed media combo with watercolour or gouache? I hope the weather treats you kindly - at least until you get yourself those new snow shoes Take care, Brian..........

i love graphitints! i have both as well. their drawing pencils are nice and muted too, but of course they aren't water soluble.. as for finishing projects, it comes and goes. i try to keep my projects short and simple when i know i am in a phase. no fail stuff. and i totally get what you mean about the fear of failing blocking the ability to even start. i have learned to keep plenty of inexpensive supplies that i can happily burn through. my most recent was a set of Mielang watercolors. All my paintober watercolor paintings were done with them. my cheap paper is the Bee cold press Jumbo pad. Tape it down and go to town. its my fave cheap paper. whatever you use, its the perfect time to use those non-lightfast and cheap supplies,.

I STILL haven't started that big expensive sketchbook I got to do loose paintings in. I look at it almost every day and then don't paint in it because I'm afraid to skew it up. Have you ever heard of Carol Tuttle and Dressing Your Truth? It's an energy profiling system. I know there are tons of personality tests like Myers-Briggs, etc and color dressing profiles, but in my opinion her system is spot on. I'm a Type 4 in Dressing Your Truth, so I have to finish stuff because it's my nature. It helped me a lot to understand why I am the way I am. I think it's all about an individual's nature and embracing and accepting who we are.

The Neocolor I are fun; they are a different texture from the Neocolor II and other crayons - a little harder (maybe waxier?). I have also noticed they are more prone to breaking than the 2s, so that's something to keep in mind. I have the Mobius & Ruppert Neocolor Wax Crayon Sharpener from Blick to go with my Neocolors, so that I don't have to work with blunt ends and a cheap palette to put the shavings of my 2s into so that I can just use the shavings like watercolor (a tip from Lindsay Weirich).

I have so many unfinished things its unreal. I have health issues that will stop me doing anything at all and it is hard to get going again. I sometimes will just sit in my studio to wait for the inspiration to come, just play with my art materials even if that’s just doing some swatching. I’ll also look through the images i’ve taken and something will grab me and make me want to draw it or paint it. Then I’ll b off again. Another way I find works for me is being project based. Ideas or themes I’m working through and how I want to express them. This is a great way as I’ll still b thinking about ideas and more than likely making notes on my phone of ideas to try when I’m well enough to get back to it. I’m a designer by trade so using the design process for art is great. I could go on but I won’t or it’ll b an essay lol

I am pretty new to painting and I get very confused on particularly when to use watercolor versus gouche but would like if you care to your take on when and why you chose your medium to create. Like I have been doing a lot of watercolor just because I’m unsure of how to “use” The gouche plus now I’m confused by acrylic gouche versus what I thought it was which is a more saturated watercolor.

I have quite a few Derwent products and love them (Inktense pencils and paint pans, the pastel paint pans, tinted charcoal paint pans, their Coloursoft pencils, drawing pencils, National Trust watercolour pencils) and have been considering the Graphitint for a while so really happy to see you swatching them :) I have so many unfinished projects in painting, colouring, scrapbook layouts, crocheting - I find if I have the time and my health is stable enough for me to continue then the project gets finished, but if I have an interruption of Fibro flare and have to stop then it's rare that I go back to them and I don't know why. I have often found that if I 'force' myself to go back and finish a project I'm not happy with the completed piece. It can be so frustrating and annoying especially when it's something I was so motivated to do and was enjoying when initially working on it. I love my small set of Neocolours II's and now I've seen you swatch the whole set I'm so tempted - love the vibrancy of them and the colours are beautiful. Hope the weather doesn't get too bad for you and you all stay safe!
