I just started MTB and I’m 40 next month. Love it, love ur videos. I’m pretty comfortable doing single black diamonds but scare of jumps. Where or how should I start training for jumps?
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
Welcome to this rad sport! I started just *after* I turned 40. 😆 Where and how to start training for jumps? This is a whole conversation, but I think you can start by working on pumping. Look for any little dip or bump on the trail that you can pump and gain speed with. If you have a pump track nearby, all the better. Learning the timing involved in pumping is a great way to start. Long pumps, short pumps, pumping through berms, and even working on the flat-ground cutty. The basic idea is to gain a strong understanding of how you can *actively* get heavy then light then heavy on your bike. Hope that helps. I really need to do a video on this.
@yeeher16714 жыл бұрын
MTB ALAN thanks that really do make sense cuz I don’t know how to pump and by riding these last couple of months. I’m able to go faster I just naturally go down on some turns or spots and pick up speed.

@rcranston34 жыл бұрын
Alan, If you could pick a trail in either snow summit or skypark for practicing jumping fundamentals, which would you choose?
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
Summit: Partywave to Westridge. All the jumps are fully-rollable except for 650b, and it has a go-around. And there are so many jumps with so many different shapes...and no gaps. Snow Summit is supposed to have a new trail called Blue Steel, and it is said to be a more beginner/intermediate trail with jumps. I know nothing about it other than that...don't even know if it's open yet. Looking forward to riding tho. Skypark: for the purposes of learning, I'd say Upper Arrow. You'd think I'd say Neverland, but with Upper Arrow, you can get back to the top pretty quick and make it more of a session. Also, the two tables after the very first wall-ride on Arrow require good technique to clear well. You can't just use speed because that will cause you to over-jump the first one, lose speed, and then case the second one. Hope that helps!

Hey Alan, it appears your wrist is 100%. Good onya mate (read with an aussie accent). These video series are a great idea. Although Summit is only open to season passholders right now, I can watch this over and over and mentally learn the trail. I'm sketched out by the jumps because of the speed required so I need to start small and gain confidence. The challenge is to find an area specifically designed with smaller, more gradual jumps that progress to moderate and larger jumps. Do you know of a place like that? Bob T.
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert! Wrist is at about 75%. This vid is from last year pre-injury. :) Glad you dig the series. I'll keep 'em coming. I didn't know that about Summit's restricting access to season pass holders. Good to know. As a note, the jumps on Partywave to Westridge are actually all totally rollable (except maybe 650b which has a go-around). It's a great trail for people to learn on. Also, I dunno if it's open yet, but they've been working on a mellower jump line called Blue Steel. Sounds like it's more along the lines of what you're talking about. I'm looking forward to trying that trail out!

So I (and others I talked too) had a problem timing/ being in the right spot for the last 2 jumps in muscle beach. Seems like u have to really hip/ almost whip (not in my wheel house) the 4th to get the last one right. But the sandpit berm still makes 5 feel sketchy/ slow. Any recommendations on that section?
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
Wuddup Tucker! I love this. Yeah...those series of jumps are a little bit of a puzzle. I find it's also about jump 3. I scrub it or kinna manual it so that I have better speed and setup for 4. And I pretty much hit 4 in the center and only lean a little bit to the right. It's kinna like a right-hand version of the second jump after the two wall rides (09:13). But I don't think it requires a whip...just hitting it a bit of an angle. If it is like like a whip, it's one that you never have to bring back because of the turn. I've not really experienced much of the sandpit berm before 5. I hit it pretty far left and early so that I'm higher on the berm and out of the slough. And yes indeed, jump 5 is a vortex imported from Sedona. What direction will I be facing when I come out of it? LOL! It goes from mellow on the left to more steep on the right. I try to come out of the berm and actually go _a little_ across the face of the jump from left to right...out of the berm and towards the center of the lip. But there's still some air-bending that has to happen after that. Hope that helps!

Great job! 2 questions, 1. Can you tell me how you drop these step downs, and 2. Do you drop your outside foot when riding berms?
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
Good questions. Step-downs: First you want to make sure your speed is good All the step downs on Partywave to Westridge are doable with medium speed. And the motion is pretty much the same motion you'd use coming off of a curb but done more slowly to account for the height of the step down. If you're comfortable you can use a sort of bunnyhop technique to get more air. Foot position on berms: You only need to drop your outside foot if you're also leaning the bike over while keeping your body upright (bike & body separation). When hitting a berm at high speed, you can usually be lined up with your bike while totally leaned over because of the g-force. And in those cases, I keep my feet level. Hope that helps!

This is a great video! I will be trying Tidal Wave next week at Snow Summit. Its goimg to be my first black diamond ever, i cant wait. Is it okay if i go slow or is that make me annoying to others?
@mtb_alan2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Party Wave is a really fun trail, but it's a pretty fast one. You might annoy some people, but try not to worry about it as long as you're not stopping on the trail. When you do drop in, it's best to do so right after a group of faster riders drop in. A lot of times, if a slower rider drops in, faster riders will wait and let the slower rider get ahead some. So, by dropping in right after a faster group, it makes it easier for the next fast group to leave a gap. I'd also suggest riding Blue Steel first and seeing how comfortable you feel with the speed and jumps on that trail. If you're doing good on that trail, then head over to Party Wave. Also know that at a certain point, Blue Steel merges with Party Wave. This happens shortly after you come out of the trees. Make sure and go right there. And after that, you'll come to a rest stop. From there, as you continue on, the trail splits again. Over the bridge will take you to Westridge (as shown in this vid). Under the bridge will take you to both Miracle Mile (black diamond) and Turtle (blue). Do know that Westridge has been updated and has some new big and more challenging jumps. See here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYSZc5SVopaDrbM Hope that helps.

I do no stabilization in post. I have a recent vid on my GoPro set up if you wanna check it out. I have no real interest in the Max as it can’t out put cropped 4K.

what do you think is the minimum suspension you would need to ride summit and trails like this? i have a newer fox float and fox shocks in the front but ive heard that my bike wont be able to hang. i just wanna send it.

Got it. Generally you'll be fine. How much fun you'll have will depend on how strong you are and how good you are at jumping. If you're strong, you can handle the chunk and braking bumps. And if have good jumping skills (meaning clearing bigger jumps and landing smooth), you can handle Partywave to Westridge.. Maybe don't hit Miracle Mile or 10ply. As a note, there is supposed to be a new trail called Blue Steel which is said to be a more beginner/intermediate flow trail. I don't know much about this trail other than it's supposed to be mellower than Partywave/Westridge. But really, take your bike and have fun. I used to ride a 29er XC hardtail with 80mm travel at Snow Summit, and I had a blast. But I stayed off of Partywave, Westridge, and Miracle Mile. 10ply wasn't there at the time. Also, my buddy Katy took her 29er hardtail up there all last season. And similarly, she stayed off the aforementioned trails and rode mostly Going Green and Turtle. She also had fun on the trails on the backside: Pirates-Plumbers-Fern and Fall Line. Hope that helps!

What casings do you run on your Maxxis tires? looks like dhf front, you have a dhr2 on the back?
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
Correct. I was running EXO on this day. I now am feeling out EXO+.
@motoxrdr44 жыл бұрын
MTB ALAN how do you like the exo+ so far? Worth the extra weight?
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
Hard to say. I’ll need to ride more chunky stuff to know. TBH, in multiple years of riding chunky rocky stuff, I’ve yet to slash a sidewall. I am trying the EXO+ more for a firmer tire that’ll allow for possibly lower PSI and a more planted feel over the chunder. As far as weight, I can’t say that I notice. It should be said that each tire can vary in weight a fair bit above or below the advertised weight. The variance from tire to tire is enough to possibly have an EXO weigh more than a Doubledown. 🤷🏽♂️
@motoxrdr44 жыл бұрын
MTB ALAN I’m the same way. Have an exo out back and slashed one in 5 years of riding. Totally get it about the weight, I’m running a specialized grid trail casing right now and it came in ~100g over stated weight 🤣

Hey Alan! Jerry here...think I’m good to ride these two trails with my SC 5010 w/ 130mm travel? Just got it and crossing my fingers that I won’t bottom out if I take big jumps. :) I weigh 155-160...
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
You should be fine on Partywave to Westridge...maybe get a little rattled here and there. Also depends on how well your suspension and tires are set up. Miracle Mile might be a bit a boxing match for ya but don't mean it can't still be fun!
@jvasquezito4 жыл бұрын
@@mtb_alan Would you elaborate a little on "how well" my suspension is set up? I'm pretty green at this point. I will receive my bike this week and will have to set up my suspension on my own. Bought a shock pump for that. I'm trying to soak up as much knowledge about suspension setups. If it helps, It will roll on Ibis Carbon 742s (35mm inner width - tubeless) with Maxxis DHF 2.5 front, and DHR II 2.4 rear. Much appreciated, Alan!

jvasquezito u can seriously injure yourself or destroy ur new bike, by riding these advance trails if ur not setup correctly, U need race ready enduro bike if u want to have fun. No pun intended.
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
That’s a pretty sweet setup. If you’re pretty green still, you won’t be pushing the bike to it’s limit on whatever trail you ride. I’ve what a 5010 can do in the right hands, and it’s a capable bike. Your tires and wheels are good! The main thing is to set your sag correctly. There are plenty of vids on this but basic setup is about 25% sag fork and about 30% sag in the shock. Some people will do a pound of air pressure in the fork fir every KILOGRAM you weigh and a pound of air pressure in the shock for every POUND you weigh. I weigh 63kg which is 160lbs. I put 63psi in the fork and 160psi in the shock. These are just guidelines mind you. Fork high-speed rebound: somewhere in the middle. Shock high-speed rebound: slow, like if you have 10 clicks total, wind it all the way clockwise and the back it out 3 clicks. Basically about one third of the total clicks. This a good STARTING setup. You can adjust from there but if you do, only adjust one thing a little and ride like that for a while before making more adjustments. Partywave to Westridge doesn’t have much chunk so a 5010 should be fun on that trail. Hope this helps!

@@mtb_alan Oh man this is super helpful, thanks! Can't wait to set it up and ride up there. Hope we cross paths one of these days so I can try to keep up with you. Btw, those guys from SSB are buddy's of mine that I ride with at Glamis (sand dunes near the Mexico border). Vinny is another guy I'd like to chase down these trails. :) Thanks again, Alan! Cheers!

You mentioned PSI, what do you have it set on your way down?
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
I normally run front 26/ back 28, but at Snow Summit, I will run it more like 28/30 or 30/32. But I've got a bit beefier tires this year (Assegai/Minion DHR), so we'll see what pressures I can run. I was running Minion DHF/DHR last year.

Heck yeah! I've only gotten to try the new meat on a few runs at Skypark and it was wet and sloppy. Looking forward to hitting Snow Summit on it! Question: do you find that you gotta lean the bike over a little more in turns? Like with your normal lean, the turning radius is a little bigger? It might have just been me or the conditions, but it felt kinna like that on the Assegai.

what's your air pressure and rebound like when u go on these type of trails
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
I run about 2 more lbs. in the tires. I don't change my rebound.
@xodanny29554 жыл бұрын
MTB ALAN I have my rebound at the fastest setting should I go around middle and I run low pressure on tires for more traction should I generally air up then
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
I can't say whether you should run more or less tire pressure without knowing what kind of trails you normally ride or what kind of tires you're running. Re: rebound. Are you talking about your fork or shock? And you have it in the fastest setting? Like wound all the way out?
@xodanny29554 жыл бұрын
@@mtb_alan yea both are at fastest I ride more tech stuff never flown like this stuff or jumpy
@mtb_alan4 жыл бұрын
Got it. I am reluctant to suggest anybody make any major adjustments, but in general on flow trails and jump lines, I would run slowish HSR in the shock and medium HSR in the fork. As far as tire pressure, I actually run my tires a tad bit harder, like 2lbs. more than normal. This is because it's more high speed and I want to avoid tire squirm in the berms and hitting my rim on square edges. Also, it's easier to hold speed. As far as traction, if you're hitting the berms early and high, you'll stay out of the loose stuff and will have better traction...basically ride where the dirt is the lightest in color. And across the paver berms, grip is generally really good. All of this is of course predicated on the assumption of good braking and cornering technique. 👍🏽
