Christmas traditions are not inherently a bad thing, but the same Christmas movies year after year becomes so very tiresome, especially in a culture which starts blasting Christmas media at people before the jack-o-lanterns have even been tossed out. If you've ever found yourself yearning for a different kind of Christmas movie, have I got the video essay for you.

I don't know... I grew up in Michigan and I never reached the point where I didn't love the snow. That really only became an issue for me when I lived in an apartment building where I needed to dig myself and my wife and my elderly neighbors out from beneath the mound of snow from the snow plows, and even then, I enjoyed the work so long as I didn't have an abusive boss who constantly harassed me for the time I was late after a dump of 4 feet of snow.

"What kind of sick freak wants that much Elf in their life?!" 😆 At certain points, the monotonous consumerism and the negativity around it just brings many people down during the holidays instead. This was an amazing essay and perspective to combat that. Snow Westerns have always been fantastic to me, from Anthony Mann's The Far Country to Sydney Pollack's Jeremiah Johnson. Thanks!

A few years ago, I actually put off watching the film Ikiru until December, because I assumed it was set during Christmas. This was due to the most famous image from the film being Takashi Shimura swinging in the playground in the snow. It was a bit awkward to realize that neither Christmas nor the holiday season was mentioned or alluded to in the film, but if you really think about it, the film spiritually falls in line with other Christmas movies, in themes of community, life and generosity. Also the snow being an obvious indicator.

My friend Brianna Zigler wrote a really good essay analyzing the film's Christmas themes, which influenced the Eyes Wide Shut section in Kubrick's Books. In essence, she argues the film uses the Christmas setting to make an anti-consumerist message. I also had Eyes Wide Shut footage cued up to use in this video but I ended up not needing it.

@@EyebrowCinema You know, I stumbled upon a video that says The Shining not only works at Hallloween, but also Christmas, and I was thinking to rewatch it. Speaking of that, I realize that just as A Nightmare Before Christmas, the Harry Potter films arso serve as well in Halloween and Christmas, I remember TNT streaming the Harry Potter films in Halloween and Christmas, they're kind of a bridge between both holidays, in that case, Tim Burton films like Batman Returns (no problem), Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are also holiday-ish. Also about Halloween, it's been so referenced in american cinema, that the youngest here in Latin America (and other parts of the world) have ended up adopting, asking for "trick or treat" at every door, every year (when many times we don't even have candies), young adults have taken advantage of it just to show off their cosplays (some very good) or watching horror movies.

I do have one favorite christmas movie that rarely ever gets talked about, Remember the Night (1940), which is also the first film starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray together, written by Preston Sturges. I think one of the big reasons it's rarely talked about (other than being very old) is that the beginning of the film is stained with a very racist stereotype which does make it hard to recommend sometimes. But once you get past that it's a wonderful film with one of my favorite performances by Barbara Stanwyck. For anyone who wants to check it out it just got added to the Criterion Channel!

The Hateful Eight was released on Christmas IIRC (as was Django). The film is absolutely Christmas as hell. Bob is imperfectly playing Silent Night on the piano as Sam Jackson is murdering Bruce Dern, who is pretty much your old racist uncle you're forced to spend time with once or twice a year turned up to the max. The Hateful Eight is about strangers who hate each other, what is more familial than that? Somebody has to get this video to Mr. Tarantino! I have a feeling he'd agree with you. P.S. I did kinda find Violent Night to be a pleasant little surprise of a movie. And given that Die hard is such considered a Christmas classic I can't believe that no one thought of Die Hard, but what if John McClane was Santa before this. And the thing I find mostly a pleasant surprise is that depsite the premise of the movie this Santa isn't a bad guy. He is jaded about the holidays, and is a bit of a hard drinker to get through the this, and that he is a former viking, he is still fundementally a good guy. He is there beating up the bad guys because a little girl is in danger and he can't stand by. And the thing I admire about the movie is that it gets that a R-rated gruff loner outsider saves the day die hard riff and a big hearted the magic is real christmas spirit kids movie kinda run on similar very base level emotional energy when you think about it. You know the fantasy fullfilment of watching things work out the way they are supposed to, that there is someone out there who will come to save the day, that if you do the right thing things will work out, that the bad guys will get their comeuppance. Let me make this clear, this is a very simple movie. About Santa violently killing thugs because a little girl is in danger. And that's kinda what I admire about it so much. This is a simple wholesome story, and leaving the cinema I was feeling more in holiday spirits than I have in a long time. Like if this wasn't so violent I would honestly considered it a uplifting family film. ALSO SANTA WAS A SLEDGEHAMMER WIELDING VIKING BACK IN THE DAY!!! Oh god I adore this movie so much >w

In "The Specialists", the main hero is also in his weakest state just when the bad guys arrive, and he has to save everyone in the worst moment imaginable. Thank you for talking about the consumerist idea of Christmas influenced by American cinema (something even pointed out by Charlie Brown, or any other Peanuts holiday special for that matter) I saw the lighting of the lights in a park, there were many people in the square and an orchestra playing Christmas songs from my country (Venezuela, where there is only snow in areas like Mérida) but they also played part of the American Christmas songbook, as if that were not enough, a girl sang a translated version of "All I Want for Christmas is You" (imagine how much money Mariah Carey earns, she wouldn't even have to work anymore), nevertheless good concert. Thank you for demystifying Ron Howard's The Grinch, I find the film entertaining, mostly because of Jim Carrey, but you pointed out the problem I have, how the film looks, "visually hideous", it looks as if the lens of the camera were blurry, being from the year 2000, it looked like a movie that was filmed 2 or 3 decades prior, NO, that's an insult since there are films from the 70s, 80s and 90s that look better even to this day, including the year 2000. If anything, is better than the Illumination's Grinch (did you saw that? I personally didn't), amazing that Jim Carrey would later play Scrooge in Robert Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol, seems like Bob really loves christmas. P. S: 13:23 Now THAT was a screamer, it wouldn't be so terrifying if it was a good Kevin Spacey movie.

i pretty strongly disagree with the idea that there's no good xmas lineup without relying on non-traditional xmas movies. there genre has a lot of bad movies, but there are also a ton of great xmas movies, certainly enough to fill the december xmas movie night calendar. You can double feature the shorts for 2/night: - the original animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas - A Charlie Brown Christmas - Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (admittedly mediocre but like, in a fever dream way) - A Very Possible Christmas (Kim Possible xmas special, and it rocks) - Shrek the Halls (best shrek since shrek 2) - Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special (has no right to be as good as it is, and I don't even like marvel) - Christmas Every Day (fairly odd parents xmas special) And then it's just a parade of 1/night until xmas: - Home Alone (it's...fine. that's why you watch it the day after thanksgiving) - Going My Way - Remember the Night - Miracle on 34th Street - Fanny and Alexander - Scrooged - The Santa Clause (the original) - Lethal Weapon - Holiday Inn - The Thin Man - Klaus (beautiful animation, heartwarming fun) - Love Actually (some of the storylines are very entertaining, come at me) - Elf (elf is a good movie, don't lump it in with santa claus 3 and jingle all the way) - Die Hard - It's a Wonderful Life - White Christmas (xmas eve) - A Christmas Story (xmas day)

White Christmas hardly has any story whatsoever. Its just a film with a bunch of decent numbers and nothing more. Its the prime example of a very weak, very mediocre musical which there were so many at that time as the genre was really beginning to take off and completely dominate the Box Office in the 50's. It lacks any interesting characters and there is any hardly any magic in it. Something that is absolutely crucial to any great musical be it Top Hat (1935), Swing Time (1936), Singing In The Rain (1952), An American In Paris (1951), A Star Is Born (1954), My Fair Lady (1964), The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), etc

@@taliamason7986 White Christmas is a vibes movie and it's really good at it. And it's so fucking quotable too. All the movies you've listed are terrific movie musicals (though Singing in the Rain has a bizarre derailment halfway through so Gene Kelly can do a 10 minute avante garde dance number that has nothing to do with the plot -- something White Christmas parodies with "Choreography"). But I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with vibes movies when done well. White Christmas wasn't made for us, it was made for 12 million servicemen coming home, and their families. And yet watching it I still feel some echo of those feelings. I think that's because it basically has no story and the only conflict is a misunderstanding plotline, so you're left to focus on the vibes alone, which are really good.

Why not, the video makes good points. The problem with Christmas movies is that they're only bearable if watched on Christmas with your family. In fact I'd prefer not to consider those Western movies as actual "Christmas movies" which may be a bit insulting towards them, but instead as replacements in order to get rid of this very notion. lol We shouldn't watch crappy movies any day of the year.

Is On Her Majesty's Secret Service a Christmas movie?

I do not like ‘Elf’ or Grinch though Chuck Jones’s version is awesome. Give me some Die Hards or Gremlins 😂 or Muppets A Christmas Carole.

Ah, The Great Silence. I hated this movie so much when I first watched it. Now I consider Corbucci's masterpiece. With all that being said, I will get you for saying that Jingle All the Way sucks

You lumped Elf in with a bunch of mediocrities- I’m telling Santa, and you sir, are going on the naughty list.

Interesting introspective... I regard Christmas movies with the same approach I have to country music - it's a genre that sucks so much that if I were exposed to a non-stop run of such, I would actually commit suicide. (No seriously, country music is the music genre most likely to result in suicide - there was even an episode of Spike TV's MANSWERS saying so.) If there are any other particular niche Christmas movies that really do it for me the same way snow westerns do for you, it's either horror - with THE CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE (1944) or BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974) being top-ranking examples - or sci-fi, with Terry Gillium's dystopian BRAZIL (1985) being my Top Favorite movie set during Christmas and one that I watch almost every Christmas now. Hell, I even have a list of certain top favorite titles that I watch for particular times of the year that not everyone would prefer to watch during those individual periods.

Hallmark movies are so bad that my mother watches them mainly to have a laugh at how silly they get. Also one of my favorite snow westerns has always been Breakheart Pass, which nobody else seems to like that much.

My mother also watched those movies (like she used to watch reality shows), dang, they're so generical and boring, I asked myself "why all of these films look the same, are they all by the same studio", now I got the answer. Now that we're talking about low budget tv films, you know the Aurora Teagarden saga? I don't know how many movies they are, but that sh1t is like infinite.
