The worst is when you are sat with 3 other snowboarders all randomly goofy or regular! Pure carnage at times - sometimes with people who actually know what they are doing! 🤣 I ran with Switch step-in right from the late 90s so got pretty sloppy with my one-foot technique as it was never really needed - when my wife finally learned to ski however I finally cracked the one-foot technique through many chair exits where I held her from falling as she was terrified! Long in the past now though - she loves skiing (and chairs) now.

@PedroPlckleАй бұрын
You're the best, Malcolm. No idiotic American-type insanity. You remind me of Ed Leigh. Solid, clear detail. I would point out just one thing that surprised me you didn't include on chairlift exiting: straight line braking. When there are 7 French children on skis surrounding you on both sides, and they ALL stop along the exact same line and you have no option to shoot-off to the left or right past them and you need to stop right in line with them in an upright, straight-ahead position... Use your trailing toe or heel to grab a bit of snow with the tread of your boot by very slightly moving it over the edge to drag in the snow as a brake. This opens up any further option to steer as well as stop, without skidding or turning the board sideways. You were actually dragging subconsciously near the top of the run. Look at your back foot. At 16:20 you grabbed the board with the sole of your boot, and then used subtle toe and heel drags in the snow near the beginning of the run. It's very comfortable to do and boosts confidence to beginners worried about lifts. Lever your feet apart to define a tortional hold on the back binding with your boot. You can also use that technique to effortlessly force your weight over the nose...🙂

Thanks for elucidating my problem, counter rotation. I think i feel out of control so I want to stop and I end up pressing the (unbuckled) back foot out, but I cant get the force to the edge, so it slides out, trying to stop, then I end up in switch, falling, or some kind of flailing stop that saves the day but looks bad...

The two tips I have for one-footing are to push your foot up against the binding and to lift your heel when pushing on the toes and vice-versa. It can be difficult to get the edge to bite when you start and you might end up pivoting into a switch stance. Just keep looking forward and roll with it if you have the space.

Your videos are really helpful. It would be great though to see some more realistic situations especially getting off a lift with rather steep, icy and carved out slopes and a bunch of skiers next to you. I'm always scared and it still happens often that we all fall if my board turns a bit and all others fall over it, causing a chain reaction 😁
@NisSubieTechA29 күн бұрын
16:33 I hate these. The exit areas don't have a long section to slow down, so you have to turn and sometimes immediately on exit. This gets tricky on 4-6 person loaded lift, but the worst ones are the old 2-3 person lifts that don't slow down on exit. You unload at speed, down an incline depending on the conditions, and must turn sharply to avoid running into a wall. I can get a right sharp turn or toe side, but heel side going left is difficult on exit. Therefore, I just sit on the right when possible. Idno if you have these lifts in your area, but this might be worth doing a video. All videos I find online just show long exit area to slow down.

Hey Malcolm, thank you so much for your videos.They been helping me out so much already. As a total beginner I still have big struggles going over flatter sections. Even with both of my feet strapped in. I feel like loosing control very easily and feel scared to catch an edge when riding a flat base. Also don’t Wanne make turns because they reduce speed a lot. Also I don’t really know where to move my Center because I’m somewhere in between toe-edge and heel-edge position. Maybe you can help me out. P.s hearing your voice in my head as you give advices, everytime when doing turns.
@elho0012 жыл бұрын
The duck is cute, but "hiding" those Supermatics in there this time is even better. 😆 One more reason to pray for a massive load of powder before your review. 😉 For the skating, to me its always been in front of the board - simply because you start/stop on the (stronger) toe edge that way. Also, as can be seen in the video, foot behind the heel edge means pushing sideways, whereas in front of toe edge it can be facing more or completely forward - nice for that initial strong push as well as when going for speed, e.g. if its flat and you just need to accelerate with 3 to 4 pushes to then glide one-footed for a bit. That idea with the loose back foot is a neat trick! Another drill I would suggest is riding more drag lifts - the track being tilted sideways or bumpy or tracked out with skier tracks all help to challenge you, while the handle of the bar/disc can give extra stability.
@jimmymcelroy29522 жыл бұрын
First off great video like always! Only thing I disagree with is waiting for other people to ride off the chair before you do. Sometimes waiting for skier's and snowboarders to go first can result in waiting too long for other people to go (they might actually be waiting for you to go first) and then the chairlift will start to whip around taking you or others out. This usually happens with a full packed chair 3+. Lately, I've been looking to be the first one off the chair. I push off the chair as soon as my board makes contact with the landing ground and then push again with my back arm against the seat once I'm standing to go even further. Or I'll just ask the people beside me if they want to get off the chair first before I do and vice versa.

One tip that I've managed to learn for myself when getting of the lift apart from getting a grip sticker (maybe it's noobish of me to use it but I'm getting all the help I can get) on the board for your leg out of bindings (which helps a lot if u ask me) : try and push side of your foot against the binding thus giving you a little more grip/feeling that you are more securely standing if you don't have the above mentioned sticker. Also if it wasn't obvious (I think) you are suppose to stand more on the leg that's in the bindings. It almost feels like coming off the lift you slide mostly on the leg thats in the bindings whilst the back leg thats out of bindings is just for support/balance. When J turn stopping (you can kinda notice Malcolm doing it too) you can slide your heel/toe a little bit (not much, just the edge of your boot) out from the board and slide it on the snow (but still most of your foot is still on the board, like 75%-90% of it) to help you stop (but to the side you are turning towards, so heel turn, heel part of the foot out of bindings gets stuck out a little bit and vice versa). Hopefully I've explained it clearly... and well anyone more experienced/knowledgable can adjust what I've just said if theres anything wrong/untoward. Hope it helps :) also big thanks Malcolm, your videos were/are very helpful. Managed to improve my riding a bit when I was off on vacation for a week in the mountains, so about 6-7 hours of snowboard each day was quite intense (but fun) learning schedule - but I like it that way. Sadly no snow where I live so I can't ride anymore unless I go on vacation which would require me to .. I don't know maybe blackmailing my boss to give me more vacation time or something :D (joke of course). Cheers.
@longebane Жыл бұрын
both the grip sticker and pushing back leg against the binding is counter to the lesson here - weight goes onto the pivot point. i know you sort of got that point, but you still seem only half-way there. back leg is just a stabilizer, but a grip sticker and/or back-leg against the binding puts too much weight on the rear

I mainly do the one footer on T-bar lifts but for chairlifts I somehow like the maneuverability of just being on foot with the board in your hand, to easily slip between people and get that empty spot on the chair which otherwise would have remained empty. It takes a little more time to strap in after every run but i feel it saved me much more by just getting on the chair faster.

Malcolm is making a subtle movement in his back leg - it's not obvious - but if you look for it - e.g. at 20:18 his foot is slightly over the toe edge, and as he transitions at 20:20, the back foot subtly shifts to the heel edge. I knew to look for it because I've been using the same technique more frequently after I discovered how useful it is. I think this little detail is important as it gives you additional traction / balance if you need it. In my experience one-footed turning doesn't work so well on ice - be very careful and remain stacked as much as possible if you're getting off on an icy landing - the lifties don't always cover a landing with enough snow if traffic is high.

I have a question, I just got a new salomon pro 153. But after reading the measurements a 156 would be a better board for me. Do u think I should change it or try the 153. Tks

What should my front-to-rear weight distribution be when one-footing? I mostly have difficulty with washing out on the heelside.

60 front 40 back, but don't overthink it, it can be difficult to quantify exactly how much weight you have through each foot, but a bit more on the front and you'll be fine 👍

I just got a new board and my back foot is slipping off quite a lot which I haven't experienced before. I'm thinking to put some surf wax or something on top of my board for some grip there. Can anyone think of why this could be a bad idea or should I do it?
