Improve your snowboarding turns and snowboarding technique by employing 'Torsional Twist' into your riding! In this video I teach you how to become a better snowboarder by using your knees and ankles properly. This important technique is often used by beginner snowboarders when they start learning, but then forgotten about as they progress. However it is very important when creating grippy short radius turns on your snowboard.
If you would like to have snowboard lessons with me here in Alpe d'Huez, France, then take a look at my website below to find out more:

This is explained alot better than in most other beginner videos. You explain how to get the board on edge perfectly. Many videos say "use your shoulder" to initiate the turn which is bad, because later you want a complete seperation of upper and lower body. Turning with the "levers" (lower body) is an awesome explenation

Great videos Malcolm, I’ve been snowboarding for over 20 years now myself but I’m not an instructor and I can’t explain properly how I do what I’m doing. I have just bought my 11 year old son his first board and teaching the very basics is easy enough but this lever analogy for torsional twist is genius Malcolm. I didn’t really know that that’s what I do when I turn! But now I can explain this better to my son. I’ve been watching a few more of your videos now and you explain everything clearly and well. Great job, and thanks.

Hi Malcolm! I'm a beginning snowboarder and I've taken some lessons and watched lots of KZbin beginner snowboard videos. This is easily one of the most helpful. I've not seen turns explained like this before. I gave this a try today and the responsiveness from the board almost startled me the first time I tried it. Everyone says "get on your toes" or "get on your heels" and that *sorta* works but the technique in this video works on a whole higher level. I felt much more in control today after working the board this way. Thanks from a grateful newbie.

Can you make a video that focuses on tight, short turns? It feels like most videos on YT focus on wide turns which are great for when the slopes are empty but most of the time, they arent. Short turns with a focus on speed control would be a great video, thanks for the content man
@malcolmmoore
@malcolmmoore 4 жыл бұрын
Sure thing, I will try and do that over the next couple of weeks. The movement in this video of using your feet and knees independently is essential for short turns. The second key ingredient is getting an early edge change before the fall line, so that you are achieving grip early in the turn, and not just skidding it around.

@@Yawnz2 skidding can work on the piste, but it definitely doesn't work when it comes to riding off piste, whether that be perfect powder or just some chopped up terrain. Malcolm Moore Yes, I have heard of the “gas pedal” or “foot pedaling”, but those analogies have never worked well for me. When you demonstrate your lever technique, I can see clearly that your knees are bent and that you use both your knees and hips, which are bigger body parts to manipulate with. Torsional twist is hard, if not impossible, to see for the students, so it’s brilliant that you can signal with your hands using the lever analogy which foot you are using to twist and untwist the board. This analogy just clicked! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😄😄😄

@@veronical8103 glad to help! I prefer not to call it foot pedaling, or gas pedal, because implies you actually slam your feet down, but it is much more effective when using your knees! Tortional twist doesn't quite have the same ring to it though!

my first time snowboarding was surprisingly easy. not because I'm some prodigy or beginners luck, but because of the physics shown in this video^ and all my years beforehand riding a Ripstik. that was about 10 years ago and i've since used Ripstiks to teach my friends the basics at home so we can make the most of our time ($$) on the mountain. Being based in Florida (contrary to popular belief, it doesn't snow here), caster boards and practicing torsional twist are probably the best tools to build a foundation for snowboarding on the cheap.

Malcom, great channel! Lots of very good instruction videos and explanations! Unfortunately Alpe d'Huez is a bit to far away for me 😞 I love your lever analogy and dry run exercise. My snowboard teacher back years ago explained it by foot movement but your lever visualization is much easier to understand from my point of view. Along with your open/close door visualization it created a four step mantra in my head "open - door - close - door" which I will remind when practicing your posture drills with ski pole. Good to have your beginner and advanced snowboard tips playlists in advance before I hit slopes again in two weeks 🙂 But there's one thing I still struggle with: sometimes in steeper choppy terrain I'm "over steering" my backside turn (no issue front side), pushing my back leg way too long and too much lean aft (already seen your videos on back leg potential and before/aft lean). Leading to slow down a lot as I often face slightly uphill, loosing my line and rhythm. I know it's hard to rate it on distance without any video or such. But maybe you have an idea of what I'm doing wrong in case it's caused by a "general reason" like wrong posture, stance (riding +15/0). Or maybe you know some corrective drills 😉 Finally, I like to watch your riding style but as soon as Indy is appearing I'm distracted and watch him. Great dog! Going to send you a tip for going out and get him a goody.
@malcolmmoore
@malcolmmoore Жыл бұрын
Hey Olly, thanks for the support and I appreciate the tip, it will go staight to some treats for Indy 🐕😁 As for the oversteering, it's difficult to say without seeing you ride. It could be a bit of counter rotation, check your arms stay in line with the board and the back arm isn't coming out at the end of the turn. It could be too much weight only on the front foot. Or something else! If it's not happening on more mellow slopes focus on what you're right there, and see if you can take those movements onto steeper slopes!

The thing that said it for me was when you were teaching this when you make the turn it's like pop pop, pop pop like each foot going. One two one two and I started doing that. Feeling that the different timing of the pops, or when. Whe the toes going from the bottom of the boot to the top of the boot turning onto your heel side. And then pushing them down from the top to the bottom not in unison, one at a time. It's awesome

Awesome video. As a beginner, can someone help me understand why it's ok to switch your edge before your board is straight in a traverse? I thought this would catch your edge and send you flying. Is this only true when the board is more horizontal? I'm struggling to understand exactly when it's ok to switch your edge and when it's not. Thank you!

Awesome video, I had been feeling pretty comfortable making S turns where I'd patiently wait till my board was pointing downhill to switch to the new edge. Essentially the board was riding me, instead of the other way around. Went down a black diamond yesterday for the first time, and that method didn't work. I need to do a better job of controlling the board onto the new edge immediately. Can't wait to try this on the hill next time! Thanks for the tutorial!

I’ve just come back from my second snowboard trip ever and I was actually better the first time I went. Felt disappointed coming home from the latest one. Wish I’d come across your videos before I went 😂 but seeing them has made me excited to get back out and practice again. Are dry slopes any use in learning? They are all I have access to outside of a ski trip.

If you've heard of a ripstik I think this kind of helps with this since the only way you can turn on that is with pushing that knee forward.

Thank you Malcolm, by watching your video I've finally knew how to change my edges after a long time being a falling leaf player. However, I found a problem that i can't figure it out myself, which is I can't put my weight on the front foot, even i can feel my gravity is shifting to the front but still not feeling my front foot is taking control. Always back foot feeling exhausted.

I find it harder to do it on the toe edge than on the heel edge. It feels a little awkward and more difficult to press down on the toe to get the turn around. Do you have any tips? Thank you for putting out these great videos.

A little summary for myself: This video is a detailed study into maximizing the use of torsional twist in order to accomplish low friction and tight turns. prerequisites: good posture Video starts with ineffective tight turns: 1. MM revisits the beginner drill called falling leaves. - focus on using knee lever action to accomplish the drill. just use one knee lever. 2. S turn: use the second lever once your board is pointed down the hill to switch to toe slide. To fix the skid and make the turns more high performance. 1. add a 2-4 second traverse between each turn. 1a. this gives speed. greater speed allows you to switch edges more and more before the fall line (due to centrifugal forces). this allows you to have grip a high fraction of the time, which is a requirement of high performance snowboarding. 2. eliminate the traverse for quick tight turns. keys to focus on: - no skidded or washed out turns. Issues I had on my first day: - my toe side traverses end up skidded for a couple seconds when I first get into it. Maybe because I'm weighting my back leg out of fear? my posture is probably all wrong too. Takeaway: - make sure feet are evenly weighted - focus on spine position over edge.
