*The "Clairvoyant girl" question's explanation:* Namgung Minsu's daughter tells Curtis she is a train baby. Train babies are babies who spent their entire lives on the train. So they have an uncanny ability adults don't have: they can clearly tune out the background vibrations and machinery in the train and distinguish the presence of living people from them. They are better at picking up signs of life like breathing, footsteps, people shifting their weight alternating between legs, etc. That's why she can put her ear to the door or floor and make out what's going on in the other car.

"Orlando" was a pretty ordinary role for Ms. Swinton. An English Queen gave Orlando an order: "never grow old, never wither, never die." Being a proper 'mascot', Orlando obeyed the order. This involved decades long 'sleeps' where Orlando doesn't age, but does sometimes he/she changes gender. All those close to Orlando fall into the same sleep, and so they don't age either. Orlando and her people form an odd sort of time-travel group, leaping forward in time decades at a go.

When this movie was going to be released in the US, the studios said for it to get a wide release they would need to cut all the backstory and exposition so that it could be a shorter action experience about getting to the front of the train. But Bong Joon-ho refused it and they said if he were to leave it as is, it would only get a limited release. Glad they didn't do it. I pirated the film before the announcement of it's release in the US and then saw it in theaters in Manhattan. Bong Joon-ho passed by me after a Q&A and i told him "I freakin' love you dude" He laughed and said "Thank you". Great experience.

A nice little detail to show the Ego of Wilford is his line "You're the first human to walk the full length of the train, tail to engine" it subtly reveals that he's never been to the end of the train, he's only seen it from cameras. But even then when he tries to connect at the beginning of the movie the feed is breaking up so he might not have ever seen it at all, he says he cares about the balance of the train but how can he talk about balance when he doesn't even know about whats beyond the first few cars. He sees himself as an all knowing Deity. This adds more layers to class separation in that the people in power talk about how they want to help those that are less fortunate, but they don't know what it's like to actually BE less fortunate.

The metaphor in this movie is more than just the train being a stratified society, and engine being currency or the power currency allows you. It's also about how people are deceived and frightened into thinking there is no other way to live, because the outside world is too hostile and it would be impossible to survive without being in the train. The ending is just telling you that you don't need to ride the train, there is life out there, another kind of life, one which though difficult might not necessarily be worse than being in the last car, living in squalor, barely surviving so those above - or in this case _ahead_ of you, can live like royalty. The natural world is out there, and if we just stepped away from the engine, if we destroyed it, life would go on. Different, but maybe better and more equal for all. Like you said in the beginning, there is enough for everyone in the train, but what we're taught from an early age, much like those kids at the school car, is that the engine is needed, it's all powerful, it must be perpetuated and it is akin to God. You can't disrupt it or challenge the order of things, challenge your place in the train or the sacrifices that must be made so the train can keep going when certain parts of it break. Restructuring the train could only get you so far. The challenges would be too many, certain less pleasant tasks would still need to be performed, and eventually it would all go back to how it was before. The only solution is to blow up the door and get out. Curtis is the most honest and raw form of humanity, one who does terrible things to survive, who cannibalises his equals because he sees no other way, but whose internal sense of justice is unbroken and willing to sacrifice himself to make the world a better place, even after being offered total power. We all need to let our inner Curtis come out. But maybe leave out the eating babies part 😉

Pretty much. Its representative of how the bourgeoise tell the proletariat that a system outside capitalism is impossible, when in fact it isnt, they just don't want it because they'd lose power. Unfortunately people are too stupid to realize.
@ri31212 жыл бұрын
But I think part of that analogy has to be acknowledged. When they did destroy the engine and break away from that corrupt system, everyone except 2 (most likely) died. To me it creates an interesting situation where the question essentially becomes: Is it better to live in a corrupt society, or to get out of it at the cost of many many lives?

Not-so-fun fact: It was shown in the movie that the protein bars they eat were from cockroaches; however, it doesn't make sense for them to be extremely revolted by that knowledge since they used to eat actual babies, right? That's because the protein bars were originally supposed to be made by... Wait for it... The feces of the rich. Yes, it was originally supposed to be feces. The thing that I always think about with the ending is that the polar bear clearly sees them as well. It's not like they have guns anymore, all their ammo is effectively gone. So to me it adds even more ambiguity because there is a chance they can kill and eat that bear, but also maybe that bear came down there and ate them if it was hungry enough.

I always thought it was interesting, it didn’t see them as a threat probably cause it’s never seen a human so wouldn’t have been taught to worry about being hunted. But yeah I suppose it could’ve eaten them, though with no humans, it’s food source was probably in abundance

Much like Parasite, this movie is also about class, but it's more on the nose about it. While most people will have a ton of nitpicks, like how do the bugs get there, this movie is one huge metaphor. I remember seeing the trailer for this back in 2013(?) and based on that I was excited. Sadly, the movie was very overlooked, but the people who saw it loved it. The concept of the head and the tail starting a revolution to be basically a move for population control was interesting. A unique and unforgettable movie. Also the green screen backgrounds didn't age well would be my only real complaint about the film making, but the shots were interesting, especially the night vision brawl, it added a chaotic nature to it without it being shaky and hard to follow 8/10

He isn't some gallant hero fighting for justice but a man who hates himself for what he's done to survive and wants to punish the one responsible for his circumstances. YES!!!! One of my favorites!!!! Edit: I adore Tilda Swinton. She is a chameleon. She can be anything. She often plays weird characters too, so this role was not a shock to me. Keep in mind, also, that this movie is based on a 1982 French graphic novel "Le Transperceneige" (aka "The Escape") so her character is likely meant to be exaggerated and over-the-top as comic characters often are, especially villains. If what she gave us is what they were hoping for, then she is the only actress that could have portrayed that character that way. I thought she was great. Weird, yes. But I love that, especially in the context of a "comic book" movie. I could imagine that character coming to life on the pages of a graphic novel. If she makes you uncomfortable, that's okay. I'm betting that was part of the movie's intent.

Much like Parasite, the film is another metaphor for capitalism. In this one it’s more clear with the sections of the train, but the message is the same. Particularly in the conclusion, in which Curtis realises that his goal of taking over the train would need him to continue oppressing the tail section. Through the film Gilliam encourages him to move forward, ascend in the metaphorical hierarchy and take Wilfreds place. The profile shots of Curtis reflect this, showing how he refuses to look sidewards, only focused on moving forward. Curtis’ goal is just another part of capitalism, the false hope of class mobility and self determination. But even if you do make it, someone has to be ground under the gears for the machine to proceed (or in Parasite, live in the basement). The engineer is the only one who sees the solution, not to move forwards, but sideways, the direction Curtis doesn’t look towards. In that, escaping the cycle of violence and oppression in the train (capitalism) one must move in a dimension perpendicular to it (the outside). Everyone on the train is told that there is no other way, that the outside is death. Yet life is shown to be able to survive, and thus life without capitalism is achievable. Bong Joon-Ho= genius

To be perfectly honest, at first I was expecting no more than your typical sci-fi, post-apocalyptic B-type of movie with some interesting things here and there, but my initial indifference to it was completely blown off as soon as the revolution started advancing through this massive train car by car, every new car was a different experience altogether and contributed to the world-building and the story of the train itself and its passengers in a way that I did not think was possible with such limited space to work with (I mean, the whole movie is basically just them going through a long hallway of different sets, aside from the very last scene with the woman and the little boy walking up the snowy mountain at the end of the film). And last year I was yet again positively surprised by the most recent movie - "Parasite", of the same director - Bong Joon-ho, and although this time I was more familiar with his work it still managed to get me practically speechless by the end, so many twists and turns and lots of questions in my mind when it was all over. If you're up for it, I would also like to recommend to you some more movies. Last time, after seeing your reaction to "The Shawshank Redemption" I recommended both "Interstellar" and "The Lord Of The Rings" Trilogy, but you told me that you've already seen them and that they were also favorites of yours. And so, at that time I gave you 5 other movie recommendations instead (of which, you've already seen 2 of them - "Fight Club" and "The Green Mile"). Today I'd like to add a few more to that list if you don't mind, as seeing you react to Snowpiercer made me think of some other movies, a few of which I will now leave here as a recommendation for your later viewing: - 12 Angry Men (1957) - The Silence Of The Lambs (1991) - -Fight Club (1999)- - -The Green Mile (1999)- - Gladiator (2000) & - Oldboy (2003) - Mad Max (1979) - Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) - Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985) - Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) I rather not talk about Oldboy at all, I think it will probably be better for your reactions later on if you know nothing about it, but I'm letting you know right now that it is a Korean film. As for the Mad Max movie franchise, well what can I say, it immediately came to my mind as soon as I heard you say "love me some post-apocalyptic type premises" at start of this video. The 2nd and 4th films are my favorite of the franchise and those 2 are what I'm more excited about to see your reactions to, but I still have to recommend watching the remaining films because they are a part of the whole Mad Max story. Especially the 1st film which, understandably, is a much more slow paced and low on the action movie than the rest (and it's not really that entertaining watching it today, in my honest opinion) but it is what lays the groundwork for all the other movies that come after it, I don't think it will be nearly as engaging watching the sequels if you don't know the origins of the main character by witnessing the foundation of the whole franchise.

I LOVED TIlda Swinton in this movie, just my opinion. But she was so unique!

I just found your channel today from your Shawshank reaction-- I just wanted to say that I love your videos! Your commentary is always so well thought out and you take the time to really think about what the directors and producers are trying to convey in each scene. Just subscribed, keep it up! Also, if you haven't seen Park Chan-wook's 2016 film "The Handmaiden", HIGHLY recommend.

7:00, fun fact. Originally what they were eating was processed sewage. But apparently they decided people would not be able to handle that so they CGed bugs over the top. You can actually see the sewage if you look close. It helps to explain why their reactions were so intense. Bugs are bad, but honestly not that bad.

Snowpiercer has a style of its own. I did feel the same way as you did about Tilda Swinton’s performances here, but in retrospect, she fits right in perfectly within the world. As you had mentioned, she may have been one of the surviving children who worked the gears in the engine, and maybe that is why she is the way she was. I would agree to that in some compacity or how else would she have known the precise movement with the demonstration of the shoe and reiterated by Wilford. Anyhow, when looking at all the characters as a whole, for example, the teacher was also pretty much over the top in her scenes with an almost religious fervent with her class. Wilford’s righthand woman was odd as well, so in conclusion, Tilda’s character was just not exaggerated. It was perfected.

12:10 I think tilda swinton's character just contrasts with the back of the train in an anachronistic way, but when they move up she seems to fit in a lot better with that environment and color pallet.

I recommend "Scent of a woman", a GREAT film, music by Thomas Newman who also did, The Green Mile & The Shawshank Redemption and you can really tell, it sounds like those and gives the movie a little bit of a similar vibe at times but I like it more than Shawshank.

Not sure if its been answered (officially or by others), but I always assumed the "clairvoyant" was a child that had grown up after working in the engine room (as was everyone in that car). They were discarded to the back when they got too big (or assigned elsewhere - made a soldier for example), but not sent all the way to the very back to prevent them from telling others what they saw. This is why they knew so much about the workings of the train, and were so socially awkward / acted broken, because they've been isolated and essentially slaves since childhood. Not because they were drugged, as we eventually found out. And I assumed this is why she was introduced sleeping / living in a drawer, hinting she was at home in a extremely confined space. Maybe there was a line in there that I missed that confirms or totally disproves this that I missed? Two other tidbits: 1) The polar bears are a red herring for survival. They actually represent danger (they were better off on the train). The bears are in their element, at the top of the food chain. Humans, despite our egos, are not. The stare down shot at the end is the bear recognizing the survivors as food. Not the other way around. There's probably a psychology paper in there somewhere about how we all assume a relatively happy ending for those two, when all the evidence up to then points to literally everyone dying. 2) The movie was adapted from a French comic book (also available in English). I've looked into out of curiosity, but never picked it up or read it. But I do understand the comic and movie are extremely different. But again, can not confirm this with 1st hand knowledge.

All the acting in this film is intentional. The exaggeration or complete lack of emotion was intended to show how the front section didn't have independent thought, and only behaved as they were told. The rear section had independent thought and rebelled against being told how to behave.

Train to Busan is another great movie that takes place (mostly) on a train. I recommend it!

Not sure if anyone has said yet but originally, the bugs in the food bar grinder machine thingie weren’t actually bugs but human faeces. Weinstein forced them to change it post production to bugs, hence the weird CG. This also delayed the release date by a while and was never actually theatrically released in the UK or many other cinemas.

This movie was based on a French graphic novel, though the story is different from what I heard (not the basic premise, but the story that they wrote on top of that). There is also a TV series currently running produced by the movies producers. The story there is different from the movie and it is quite good (based on the first four episodes I've seen). Here in Europe it runs on Netflix, no idea who broadcasts it in the USA. In the TV series the train consists of 1001 carriages and there are more classes, so it isn't just poor people vs rich people.

It amused me when another movie came out not too long after this called High-Rise that had some similar elements but was set vertically in a building instead of horizontally on a train. Snowpiercer was the better of the two and had a more interesting concept. High-Rise might be worth checking out though. Tom Hiddleston was pretty good in it.

apparently the protein bars were originally made from the human excrement of the front passenges, which is why this reaction is so shocking. but it was switched in the final cut to bugs 🐛

If you watch the pilot of the now started series, there is a small flashback of how the people got on the tail end of the train. It kinda explains why they treat them like that.

Brandon, you gotta check out George Lucus' very first film he ever directed and produced called THX 1138, which is about an underground society that has forced it's citizens to be slaves and forced to take drugs daily to keep them docile and calm. Robert Duval plays in this movie who inadvertantly goes off his medication and he decides to escape his captivity. This movie came out around 1970.

at its bones, Snowpiercer is a classic 'tower block' story with sprinkles of Soylent Green, Game of Death and a bit of Star Wars too the fight scenes though, few films can carry such intensity
