This was the very first scene I had ever... seen... of Star Wars. This was the scene that started it all for me. And YEAH. AGREED - The motion of the music just hits a certain nerve. It has a sense of tenacity or “won’t give up”/“We WILL accomplish the mission” that’s infectious. So glad it was thoroughly used in Shadows of the Empire in the Ord Mantell/train level

There seems to be a rule in modern cinema, that under no circumstance, can a minor character behave like a human being, and do the right thing in a situation. They all have to run away or act dumb so Tom Cruise or The Rock can save the day. This scene highlights one of the things that makes the original saga stand out from so many modern films: 1. Showing us this world through the minor characters’ points of view. 2. Allowing the minor character to make choices that could affect the narrative. Where most movies, even some of the recent Star Wars films, present the characters as background noise or cannon fodder, These films present them as real people who have their own stake in the story they’re apart of. This guy, The Rancor Keeper, the pilot who smashes his ship into the Super Star Destroyer, or even some of the clones in the prequels. Star Wars feels like a true universe, as every character, big or small, has a motivation and a story of their own to tell within each frame.

It also helps reinforce the main characters. Notice how initially he doesn't seem to react to the fact he was being responded to, but he grins when he hears Han's sarcastic comments. He's probably expecting to find them almost freezing to death, and he's elated to hear that a night in Hoth's sub-zero tundra hasn't done anything to break Solo's spirit. It tells it's own little story about how these minor characters know and interact with the main characters

The amount of planning and effort that went into this scene in particular was huge. It was filmed in Norway, on top of the central mountains in the middle of nowhere. The one local hotel had no idea what hit them when Lucas and the film team turned up. The footage is mostly from helicopter, flying super low, and slightly sped up to increase the effect of the speeder's skimming and gliding close to the ground at high speed. Absolutely awesome. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6bEZWR3fbubobs

That intro, flying over the snowy mountains, hearing the engine of snow speeders, and then music starts as they brake off. Pilot that is just an ordinary man, believable face in the cockpit, no need to over do it with a cute actor or actress, just a regular military personnel guy, a face of the rebel. Star Wars was just that, an ordinary people in extraordinary space fantasy. No new movie will ever top this, not the Disney garbage for sure.

Edit: it was 1981 and I was having an awful time in third grade at a new school. My mother decided to give me a day off and take me to a post release showing of empire at a theatre in Bondi in Sydney. I was a huge fan of the colonial vipers from galactica. I loved that downward sloping wing. To see the snow speeders in the first trailers blew my mind. It was like seeing a vehicle I had built for myself to fly in and have adventures in. There was a hobby shop in Sydney called hobbyco and they was Star Wars models of x wings and a snowspeeder. The modellers that used to display things in hobbyco always put an interesting spin on things. An x wing pilot with an eye patch and a section of the nose blown out. Speeder pilot figures with interesting helmet designs. This was creativity that ILM could have used.

There is a lot of good dynamics in the scene. -The Speeders fly but are shown bouncing over the mountains -The scene is designed to build suspense (especially with the music) -It also serves to introduce the fighter for the battle to come -It further introduces Hobbie another pilot who is lost in that battle making the world seem wider. -This is also a narrative tease on the End scene using the same music as they attempt to get away from the Super Star Destroyer but this time without Han Solo. All just in 1:09 seconds of scene a lot was done. That's what is called Good Economy of Story.

This is what I love about the OT (or Star Wars in general). EVERYBODY in the whole Alliance is working as a TEAM with their equal share of responsibilities, and even the Heroes (despite the plot armour) know that they need each other. Heroes are not walking back to the base heroically making the rest look like useless dumb cannon fodders. Minor characters are given respectful screen time to show that they are Crucial to the Alliance, that their decisions and actions equally have stakes, and concequences.

I'm a 46 year old helicopter pilot sitting in my office, grounded because the weather is bad tonight. Seeing this scene while searching for Star Wars scenes I love literally brought tears to my eyes for the literal perfection that it is - the flying, the tension, the MUSIC! Just pure magic! This is easily my favourite piece of music from all of the movies. It also made me realise just how AWFUL Disney Star Wars is, as they have failed to capture the magic that my brothers and I felt as kids growing up with it. My kids (8 and 14) have ZERO interest in the new Star Wars, and that's sad for someone who had so much love for it. Disney had a golden goose, and they've murdered it! I'll never forgive them for that!!!

It's kind of funny now in terms of Star Wars movies, the Snowspeeder has only ever appeared here; once in Empire Strikes Back, yet for me this has got to be easily in my Top-10 most iconic Star Wars vehicles and ships list =D

Best music and scene in Star Wars!

I absolutely love this musical suite playing in the background. It’s light and uplifting like the Star Wars of old! I remember they used it in the Knights of the Old Republic game as well. I believe on the part where you attempt to takeover an imperial train. Great memories!

You mean Jedi Academy? Because there is no train and definitely no Galactic Empire in the KOTOR games.

I told my kids to go close to the tv screen just before this scene happened.

Rogue 2 is the GOAT. If he wasn't there, it's game over.

His real name is Zev Senesca. Pretty cool guy, appeared in some of the Star Wars comics around this time too. I hate that the imperial walkers later in this movie killed him.

Good old Zev.

The snowspeeder pilot’s POV is still sick after all these years. I can only imagine the g-forces in the cockpit.
@jeremyfrost263610 күн бұрын
In the books they go into more detail about the tech. Most vehicles have things called inertial dampers that make sure pilots don't feel any G-force, so Zev was probably fine.

The Snowspeeder is probably my favorite ship in the Rebel's Arsenal.

This scene is one reason why this movie is so good. That sense of urgency and tension you feel along with the music. I also love the pilot's expression while searching it's those little subtleties that go a long way. You won't find this attention to detail in the sequels or prequels.

Amazing. This scene alone was better than all the prequels and sequels post trilogy.
