I remember Silver Tips in .38 was the go to! But I also remember Gold Dot in .45 would expand to .75 caliber. Seriously know the manufacturer down loads the powder charges. That or the copper is not annealed (softened) or alloying the lead harder! Downloading makes more sense, less powder more profit!

Back in the day, the 2" snubby was commonly carried by Detectives or as a uniformed backup gun. One of the most popular loads for them was the wadcutter. My wife's .38Spl is loaded with Buffalo Bore hard cast lead wadcutters, and both of us are happy with that load for her heater. A test run of those on the channel here would be interesting.
@graywind4326

I run those too in my 442. They just punch straight through but the flat tip cuts tissue whereas conical bullets tend slip-it out-of the way but do make holes and those do destroy organs. Its not in clear gel but google that load on TNOutdoors9’s channel. He tested it a longtime ago. I also run buffalo bore 110 Plus P all copper hollow points. No test but have they would expand modestly due to all copper bullet and buffalo bore plus p velocity. They test their stuff.
@acid6urns
@acid6urns 7 ай бұрын
wadcutters are still a worse choice than a good expanding hollow point, which while a rarity in .38 (it’s just a low power cartridge, it’s sorta like .380 with a tiny bit more energy, but still very very slow) underwood and buffalo bore would be the two companies capable of selling them, but honestly for low power rounds like 380 and 38spl the underwood extreme defender is the best possible choice, you get good penetration but no over penetration, and still get a wound cavity better than fmj or wadcutter. another good option with 38spl is soft lead round nose, it will interestingly expand significantly more than any .38 hollow point

One of the problems with Plus P ammo is that they are not made to tell you exactly just how much Plus P there is in the bullet. It could be +P of a small amount or a very large amount so you have done the public a much needed service with these these so keep on doing them.

The FBI load as loaded by Underwood or Buffalo Bore is in my opinion the most consistent and devastating .38 round there could ever be if you don't mind the slightly excessive recoil. It's a 158 grain +P semi wadcutter hollow point. Just an exposed soft lead hollow point, a very wide and deep hollow point I might add. Very reliable expansion and energy numbers about double that of the ammo tested here. Serious stuff!

Its too damn bad the big ammo companies do not watch any of these tests and keep putting out sub par ammo in 38 and 44 special, I wonder if the public would not be better served by Winchester putting out a high velocity full profile wadcutter, lets say 800 from a snub, 900 from a 4 inch barrel in 100 round white box packaging as an example allowing people to practice and carry with the same round in their snubs. Just an idea

Keep in mind that today's plusP ammo is not really historically plusP, when ammo was loaded in the 20's, 30's and into the early fifties what we now call plusP was the standard loading. What we call plusP was off the shelf standard rounds back then, it began to be downloaded in the late 40's and early 50's over concerns of blowing up older guns and later over the lawyers getting involved. The plusP designation was added when defensive ammo began to be loaded hotter as a marketing ploy and in response to the wimpy rounds being sold and complaints from LE.

I wonder if the Remington HTP 125gr or the HTP 158gr + P rounds would expand. It would be nice to find a good 38 special round that will perform without breaking the bank. "Buffalo Bore SWC-HP 158gr + P work great but they're just stupid expensive. After watching your last "Underwood" 38 special test I'm feeling really bad about those now. And those are just as stupid priced as those "Buffalo Bore" Watching these "Silvertip" rounds under perform makes me feel like the company owes you a refund. Great video. Thank you for showing people what companies are robbing people with their fraudulent ammo. A FMJ does just as good if not better than one of those slower moving HP's. Keep them coming. I smashed that thumbs up. Peace.. Joe

Back about 50 years ago a police officer friend of mine carried a 38 snub for a back up and his load of choice was a 148 grain hollow base wad cutter loaded backwards in the case over about 2.8 grains of bullseye powder. Those things up close would turn wrong side out to about 3/4" on anything you hit with it. They are probably not politically correct for use on werewolves now days.

The HST load seems to have done well in tests from what I've seen. That Federal Punch load might (I hope anyway) work too.

I have a 357 mag/38 sp 3 inch Taurus. I carry 357 loads. If there was a 38 sp that reliably expanded at about 300+ foot pounds (9mm energy) I'd carry it, because 357 can be so snappy. Today's "+P" entrant was at 200 foot pounds - weak sauce with no expansion, but at least they solved that over-penetration problem, huh?

Remington stopped making the dead soft “FBI Load” 158 grain lead SWC hollowpoint .38+P a while ago. Those were legit hitters and expanders from a snubby barrel. (I know Remington still makes a similar product but I believe it’s a changed bullet and maybe a changed powder loading.)

it is cold where you are testing. cold weather does effect the powder. so the speeds can be slower. perhaps try this test in warmer weather and we can see. you have good videos , thanks for sharing.

Great video, even with sub-par ammo lol. The main thing I need to tell you is that I just happened to check and it said I was not subscribed. I've been around for a long time, even sent in some ammo for testing and I'm not subbed? Total BS! Maybe you should make an announcement in the next few videos.

Thank you for your videos. I have a Taurus 605 with 3” barrel. Disappointed these rounds don’t perform. I need to go through your videos to see if the Underwood worked better. I like the 38 loads for a nightstand gun. My wife can shoot it as well. Thanks again
