I am lucky to have a Latvian of my own. Found it hilarious at first when I met his family or friends how they would answer “normal” when I asked how they were - it was always either without expression at all, or with an expression of vague discomfort at the unuttered suggestion that somehow they could be anything other than normal. Also, I can’t help imagine a normal innocent Latvian being questioned by a non-Latvian over a crime; “Tell me exactly what happened that day.” “That day, everything was normal. I was normal, and….my friends were all normal too.” Would sound so suspicious 🤭

I thoroughly enjoy your irregular Latvian lessons. I’ll use this when I visit in June for Jāni

Tas ir normals (adj) or Tas ir normali (adv) I am a little confused why DeepL returns Tas ir normali for that is normal. Help! :)

I think I have heard 'nenormals' a lot more than 'normali'. Viss Kartiba is a great latvian expression. There's another english word that everyone is saying all the time now. You could also talk about the overuse of Ciao. I'm half Latvian, raised in America, and I don't think I will ever properly assimilate into Latvia, and that's actually OK with me. I'm glad I'm American to be honest, except that I've had it with America, and living in Europe likely permanently. I need English however, so I may have to live in the UK, which I also don't want. Maybe Germany or somewhere else will work out. Latvia is cool on many levels, but it is weirdly hard to take it seriously, even though this would depress my long departed grandparents. I would not want to be stuck in limited horizons. This is the power of the USA. Too bad it's a complete crap show.

When are we going to sit down? "Where are we going to find a bathroom" is a big New York question as well (as you've probably noticed). This coming from un Čikāgas Amerikāniete.

Omg especially the bathroom. It was a real issue sometimes, as it was so hot I also tried to drink a lot. 🏃♀️ but still - amazing adventure :)

It seems a lot like the literal English concept of normal, the Russian concept of normal, and the ironic online concept of "having a normal one."

I teach English in Latvia, and I don't understand why my Latvian students tend to add i when replying to me with qualitative adjectives. This/That is normally (not normal). This/That is fundamentally (not fundamental). Is this an adjective plural or adverb ending?
@subtlewolf7 ай бұрын
It may indeed be used as an adverb ending. "Tas ir normāls" = that thing is normal "Tas ir normāli" = this process/manner is normal

"Normal" has made its way into Japanese too, but it means "heterosexual" lol
