Paldies google translate. Unfortunately, my trip to visit Latvia and my grandmother's hometown of Saldus had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus. I was so excited to try tons of real latvian foods during my trip, and now I must wait longer haha. Love your videos!

Rye bread soup is one of the best deserts :) in Estonian we call it Leivasupp Though we eat bread soup typically with milk and fruits in them as well. With milk bc it's very thick and hard to swallow without milk. Also that premade bread soup's packaging looked very familiar to our Tartu Mill packaging lmao :D I hope you had a good birthday and wish you the best :)

I lost 7 kilograms in the first two months after moving to Latvia. Let's say the food didn't entice me to overeating. I was rather surprised at being offered Latvian Balsam (the real thing, not the weakened and sweetened blackcurrant thing) for Sunday breakfast at my love's parents. Well, they are both impressively vital for their age. My thought: if they start the day with it, it might do me good too!

Although I don't cook, when I was in Riga I just adored Black Balsam, especially the original variety. So delicious! Maybe some nice lady will make me bread soup someday if I bring the liquid refreshment.

Manna vecāmāte bieži taisīja debesmanna. Man sevišķi negaršoja. Kāpēc latvieši tik daudz lieto dzērvenes? Not a big fan to this day. I’m 75! Yikes! I’m sharing these delightful videos with my American children, who love all things Latvian. They are thrilled to hear these quirky stories, some of which they remember from my mom. Thank you. You are delightful.

anyway- love bread soup! Caviar used to was seen as peasant food, nobody wanted to eat it. There was time when prawns were very unpopular food (still is with some people). There are European countries in which people do not eat buckwheat. This is despite buckwheat and millet being the earliest cultivated grains. People have lost their connection to nature and lost knowledge of variety of foods. Keep it up- someone somewhere will appreciate it.

Ceru jums bija ļoti laba Dzimšanas diena! Kā bērns uz USA atbraucām 69 gadus atpakaļ. Latviešu rupjumaize nebija bet Vāciešu veikals pārdēvē pelēku rupjumaize kurš ļoti garšīgs bija. Kad skatītāšanās beidzās video es domāju tā pelēka maize zupas būtu arī garšīga. Šeit visi priecājās kad es pīrāgus tāpat kā māte taisīja, bekons,sīpolus, salts un pipari.

Germane - kā mēs Amērikā saucam Lielas vārdi es nezinu tos, bet varu izgudrot un tad saprotu no kas rakstīts bija. Ir četrdesmit gadus bijis un ar cilvēkiem nerunā Latviski vēl. Ja runāt mēģinu man vajag lēnām to darī. Latvieši diežgan tāli no manis dzīvo un viņus nezinu. Jūsu “site” es “copi ed and pasted” un aizsūtīju dēlam lai viņš varēt saprast kā apstrādājām un ka auseklīti to dzirda. Jo; redzu jūs labākā mācītāja kura pavisam pareiz to dara. It's a bummer that you had to celebrate in quarantine, but if you follow latvian stereotypes, than maybe staying quiet at home is not so bad hahaha but may your dreams come true. second, es gribu maizes zupas maisījumu, tāpec rye bread is almost impossible to find here in Brazil and i'd love to share it with my mom, whose family is from latvia! when me and my siblings were younger, she could get hold of rye bread with the elderly but she would almost always make fried bread, which i love and miss a lot. i love it also when she makes salda zupa, and it's quite fun to see her satisfaction when she does it and remembers childhood. she still has quite latvian taste buds. so it would be nice to have a shortcut to experiment something latvian i never got to try and to get closer to my roots, specially on the quarantine, the most excellent time to experiment on the kitchen. lots of milestibu un veselibu to you!
