I can give this Aquaman King of Atlantis show Some credit for only lasting 3 Episodes. Thundercats Roar went on for 50 Episodes, While Teen Titans Go lasted MUCH longer than that.

This is gonna be a real hot take but I honestly think the TCats Roar animation style looks way better here. There's more detail in the environment and the colors look better saturated here. I also like the expressiveness of the designs too. This Aquaman show overall has more going for it visually than TCats Roar honestly. That series just looked dry to me. Is it the best animation I've seen in a cartoon? Nah. But it is pretty decent and far from bad as other people say it is.

I didn't grow up with Thundercats so I gave Roar a go. The writting is worse than the art. There are no set ups, no punchlines, and no slapstick. Their idea of humor is running around, screaming, and off model faces. The characters were far too aloof to the situations they are in. Especailly Lion-O. No mater how stupid the situation is the characters should take it very seriously. If the characters don't care why should the audience. In the first epiosde they were flying away from their home plannet and they were smilling. What? Remember when Homer Simpson almost caused a melt down at the powerplant and he saved they day by playing enemy miney mininey mo. The whole town celebrated him and he felt like a fraud. Would you ever get that kind of emotioal depth from Thundercats Roar. The characters are too darn happy all the time especailly Lion-o. Humor comes from conflict. They don't all gotta be jerks but they are so goody goody. Nope. How do you get slapstick humor wrong? These people need to throw on some Looney Tunes. They also need to read Grafield and learn how to construct a joke. Someone falling down the stairs and being in the hospital in the next shot is pretty funny. If Lion-O fell down the stairs he would probably bounce off his butt and keep going. Its not funny the characters are made of rubber.

I think if Thundercats Roar was announced around the same time as a revival of the 2011 Thundercats with it being meant for the younger kids. I think the backlash would’ve been lessened. Amber Heard isn't in it. So I'm already more excited about this than the sequel. On the other hand, I miss the more serious action cartoons in kids networks and not just streaming services. Luckily, there's a seemingly serious action cartoon created by Genndy Tartokovsky called Unicorn Warriors Eternal (I think) coming to Cartoon Network and I can't wait to see it. BTW, that Aquaman pilot was made by the same guys who made Smallville, my favorite live action show of all time and eventually introduced its' own version of Aquaman, that will reach its' 20th anniversary next month

yeah...... Bland and oversimplified styles seem to be all the rage in Western animation rn. Perfectly round eyes, or dots for eyes. This chubby style that's at the same time SO different from Steven universe is just plain fun to watch. The expressiveness of the *entire* body is what really appeals to me. Almost never standing still, almost never only emoting only with their face or a shrug of the shoulders. No matter how simplistic the style is, it's a lot of extra work you can see showing through on the animator's part

For me, it runs into the same problem Roar ran into. It feels cynical. Like, *really* fucking cynical. Honestly, this feels a bit more appropriate of a franchise to do this with because of the timing - the spin-off is actually concurrent with the franchise. But it's still really fucking cynical. The art look like more effort was put into it, but it still has that 'calculated shittiness' that made Roar so visually unappealing. It's trying to be wacky and cool by giving a freehand, off-model, 'poorly drawn' style, but it still feels like the elements that make it so are calculated algorithmically rather than a genuine sense of style. Which might be why it seems so fucking cynical.

I believe the biggest flaw with this reboots it's the constant appearence of this 'goofy energetic and kind of unaware' character. Why every show stylized like this has to involve a character like that. And worst of all, aquaman, whom was changed not once, but twice with the JLU series and the snyderverse, making at least 3 personalities for the same character in the last 10 years. They tried to make him serious, then funny, then parody, then badass, then goofy. There's no fundamental core. Imagine if the only appearences of Darth Vader out there were Lego, robot chicken and clone wars. It just makes the character very unstable imo.

It's really not so bad. It'd fine if you don't like the Thundercats Roar art style, but I think they put it to better use here. There's actual care put into the more fluid action sequences. There's also weirdly some effort put into the story in the sense that they foreshadow things alot along with a big twist at the end that I thought was just a joke. My only real issue with this show is the dialog. It's largely the same hyperactive stuff we've been getting lately. It could use some more wit.

I feel it's a mix of the thundercats roar backlash (that stemmed from the Teen Titans Go! backlash) with the animation style trying to emulate Adventure Time and other similar shows with the fact that Aquaman was treated like a joke for decades that he was only now starting to shake that created this backlash. You even show in the video with the 2003 parody show how he was presented. I feel it was the wrong character at the wrong time to do this with, like if this was plastic man or even booster gold or some other more comedic DC hero this may have gone over better to a degree. It's also odd that WB would go this route because as I recall Roar didn't do all that well and got cancelled before its first season even ended, so why they'd double down on it is confusing from a business standpoint. But in terms of the video, I think your example is not great situationally with MaoMao, since MaoMao is (to my knowledge) an original property that is presented the way it was intended with no preconceived way it's supposed to be. In those instances, people tend to be more open to hearing it out, whereas this, TTG and TCR are based on existing properties with existing fanbases that like it the way it is, which is where the backlash comes from. A better example would have been pointing to an adaptation like this that you like as opposed to an original property in the same vein, since like I said before it's like adventure time visually and that was popular so it's not exactly the style or tone that necessarily the problem, it's the subject matter. You kinda got boxed into only viewing it from a neutral cartoon standpoint as opposed to a cartoon adaptation of something else, which makes sense since cartoons and animation are your focus. As for me, I don't have strong feelings one way or the other, I get the backlash even if it's overblown like always, but I'm not gonna partake in it. I get that sounds weird after how much I wrote, I just wanted to state my piece on this reaction specifically. But either way, keep up the solid work.

Just because I'd much rather have serious action shows doesn't mean I can't enjoy shows of a different tone and vibe. I just wish companies wouldn't try to stomp a show out the second we enjoy it. BONUS HISTORICAL FACT: aquaman was marketed in the original 40's comics to kids even younger than the normal superhero demographic at the time, and had a very slow and steady shift until about the mid 80s where he finally turned into the modern badass depiction more akin to his marvel counterpart, namor.

@@kingkong9892 but he’s become one, like in the justice league, super man and Batman the animated series, though I do mean the DC animated universe not really his comics. That’s why I think he does work in this kinda of stylised show. I’m mean just off the top of my head, Batman brave and the bold, even online and other media like SouthPark and spongebob have absolutely ripped into him. He’s an awesome character but the moment you bring up being able to control fish….. again I hate that the character has been undercut because I do like his powers and origins, but when I look at aqua man I do think of a water-based he-man. And again I love it! I think he’s super campy and fun. Aqua man was one of the few characters in DC that couldn’t break into the mainstream with his own origin movie or animated show. It wasn’t until recently he was revived, and that came with an entire character redesign and origins. Also double checking it, Wikipedia has an entire page dedicated to his pop culture influence, I mean just google “why do people hate aqua man” and you’ll see a lot of forums from 2014 talking about it

My problems with Teen Titans Go is with the characters and the lessons that gives. I've never seen Thundercats nor Thundercats Roar, but I'm sure the originals was a helluva lot better.

I don't mind superheroes getting wacky action shows, cause batman brave and the bold is literally that as well as justice league action, and dc girls shows those shows are wacky while being **good** and has an appealing art style. Shit like aquaman and ttg does not

I think you just lose the point. For me the problem is not the show is a wacky action comedic show, the problem is the art style. If the aquaman show has the same style as Teen Titans Go, I would love the show. But I just can't stand this art style. Everyone seems to be melting. Everything is very ugly. I don't want to watch something that makes me want to throw up.

I agree to a degree It's fine to not like the shows but some people take their hate so far they feel the need to send hate messages to people working on the show or attack people who like them. I think the reason shows like Thundercats Roar (which I never cared for plus I don't even care about ThunderCats) and Teen Titans Go (which I do like alongside the original 2003 show) are hated or overhated in Teen Titans Go's case is not because their simply comedies but because their reboots of beloved shows that were focused on action first and comedy 2nd and add in nostalgia for these shows, a lack of modern action cartoons on Cartoon Network and in Teen Titans case a cliffhanger ending those are reasons their hated so much.

jellystone is the example of a cartoon reboot done right, the art style may look very silly, but the show has actual funny, well constructed jokes, and not just a bunch of braindead characters running and screaming like some other reboots trying too hard to be funny (cough, cough Thundercats roar cough, cough)

How could you refuse a cartoon from the creator of such monumental classics like Pickle and Peanut and Thundercats Roar? But for real, it would have been cool to see an Aquaman show with a similar tone to Young Justice. People already have enough trouble taking the character seriously. It feels like CN is desperately trying to find a new Teen Titans Go since the buzz around that show has long fizzled out. Thundercats Roar failed miserably, so I have no idea why they think this will work since it just looks like it's going to be more of the same. *Also, it's really strange seeing James Wan's name is attached to this, considering what he's mainly known for*

Out of all the artists and show writers that don't have degrees they picked him to ruin another franchise _twice_ ? I guess if you want to pay someone as little as possible for their work this is a way to do it, but I guarantee they probably will also pay the people that are just doing their jobs working on this less than their other projects as well :/

I feel the reason why teen titan go and thundercat roar are so hated is becuse they had to live up to previous shows that were so loved and, lets face it no one like the aquaman shows from the 60s. The show can be good alot of shows that i like have bad artstlyes(well in my opinion).So lets just wait and see if the show is good or bad.

I think the issue with Aquaman is the tone, it's weird how sure the early 80/90's series was a joke and goofed on, but then they tried to make him a more serious hardass king of atlantis and now they are reverting him into a punching bag. It's just a weird way to play with a character, makes you wonder why/how this got greenlit in the first place when it felt like they were trying to make him more serious. Think people would be more receptive if say they did it with the Wonder Twins. Not like it's any skin off my nose, it's just something to look at and shrug.
