Yes, remember seeing him in 1913 before WW1 - he was impressive then but only got better with age 😂😂😂😂 - but seriously, he is a legend not only in Wales but in the game of rugby worldwide. I wish him well in retirement and hope he doesn't pay the price for his bruising no-compromise play over the decades. Diolch yn Fawr Alun ( and of course Justin as well - what a player )

A fitting emotional tribute to two great players, thank you from an Ospreys fan in Germany who has great sympathies for Wales! I remember the first time I visited Wales, I was in a pub in Aberystwyth and on all the walls they had posters for a lottery. The first price? A car? Money? A holiday? No: to have AWJ train your local team for one session. That said it all for me!

Two living rugby legends. Justin Tipuric is pure class, he is more than just a forward, he is a proper rugby man. But Alun Wyn is more than all the others, though, especially for his longevity at high and international level. I could see him playing in Treviso with the Ospreys and I remember I wanted to be there that day even because of him. And I'm italian. It'll be very sad to look at Wales' squad entering the field and not see AW as first of the row. Anyway, I wouldn't forget Josh Navidi as well, a great great player.

Well said my man, on all the points you made. Two of our true modern day heroes for their deeds on the pitch and equally for how they carried themselves. I rarely say such things, but it genuinely warms my ageing heart to see some of the wonderful comments from all parts of the rugby world that recognise and applaud them both for their fantastic contribution to our wonderful game. From the long ago, but many times when my grandad took me to the Arms Park as a young'un, and gave me the gift of not just understanding the game but, even better than that, truly appreciating the spirit and values that come with it, there have been few and far between such standard bearers for us to both cheer and applaud in equal measure, regardless of our colours

Even when rated as one of the best flankers in the world Tipuric is underrated. In the shadows of AWJ and Warbs he maybe did not shine as bright but boy did he shine with all round class. Possibly one of the best ALLROUND rugby players EVER alongside McCraw and Hill. He could run with the backs, pass and weave with the centres and grind shoulder to shoulder with the forwards. And at the end of the game Tips had a knack, when the stats came in "tackles made", "clear outs", "turnovers" .. you know his name was on it. Great service to Wales, Ospreys and a great service to Rugby.

As much as I love watching skillfully exectued rugby (can't do it myself but it sure looks good when others manage it) I would maintain that the heart and soul of the game is the "work-rate" player; the player who is always just there, hitting rucks, running support lines, carrying the ball into contact, chasing kicks, getting back to cover the backfield. Alun Wyn Jones is the Platonic ideal of that player, both in terms of how he played the game and how many games he played. He was always there. I only started playing and watching the game in 2005 when I was 20 years old (I'm a year older than AWJ) so for me personally Alun Wyn Jones has always been there in rugby as I have ever known it and it is hard to believe he won't be.

Both players gave their all for the Welsh shirt and every game they played for ospreys and the lions. Both are the embodiment of professional rugby players and should be the inspiration for any current and future players. I fondly rambert watching AWJ's first wales International and honestly thinking he was outstanding after years of thinking second rows were just giants with very little skill, he completely redefined the position and then adapted his game for the next 2 decades. Then there was tips, I remember that LV cup game where he was the ospreys shining light, and he truly grew from there to become one of, if not the best openside in world rugby at points in his career. He was the reincarnation of martyn Williams (in a rugby sense, he's still alive) blending great jackling and tackling, with the skills of world class outside centre. The pair were unbelievable and will be sorely missed but fondly remembered for their great performances and endless commitment to Welsh rugby.

AWJ would have his number retired if he were playing an American sport. I recognize that only happens in Murrica but what Squidge was saying about the Welsh 5 is the underlying motivation for doing it. Of course the downside is that there are teams in multiple sports where no player can wear a single-digit number anymore. I’m not recommending it, just noting it. Thank you Justin, thank you Alan Wyn and thanks for this Squidge.

Maybe I can hold a sliver of hope Gats will realise his mistake in telling them they won't be playing, and he'll call at least one of them up to the squad for one last run out on the biggest stage. Diloch boys, Tipuric perhaps the most talented player we've produced in recent memory, AWJ the hardest working. Icons each in their own right, the pitch will feel empty without the two of you.

AWJ is one of those players that were there playing ever since I was conscious. Across all sports on Earth, those are getting rarer and rarer. Many legends who were part of that crowd have retired in the past few years. Many retired cause they declined spectacularly until they couldn't properly play anymore. It wasn't the case for AWJ. He was still that guy, up until his very last games. One of the very few. There's only one such guy left actually, and when the only athlete I can think to compare him to is LeBron James, fuck if that doesn't mean something about how great of a player he was.
