As a springbok supporter, I can honestly say it is the win that I have felt the most conflicted over. The game was so good that no one deserved to loose - and the utter disappointment that the French players and fans must have felt is heartbreaking. I cringe every time I see any Bok fan poking fun at the French loss or posting derogatory meems - it just doesn't show the respect both teams deserved from that game alone - let alone the 4 years of games that preceded it.

There is not a lot of French fans saying this game was that great, because that's a painful one... At least we loose in best way we could, that's what you expect from the hosts. As a Bok fan, the most remarkable thing about this game is how many of us survived what felt like an 80 minute heart attack. The ‘95 Final was tense, but at half-time you could feel something was in the air, this game, when Eben scored, it almost didn’t register that somehow the boys weren’t just still in it, but they were in front. Like Bongi said, FOR SOUTH AFRICA! Condolences to France, it takes two teams to make something that special, and they were utterly brilliantly breath-taking.

In 1995, what was "in the air" was the huge scandal that all rugby fans remembered. You can give O'Keeffe a beautiful gold watch. As with William Derek Bevan in 1995, after the final won by South Africa against New Zealand and having refused 4 tries to France in the semi-final (all rugby fans remember this scandal), he receives as a gift from the SouthAfricans, a gold watch. Subsequently, Derek Bevan was charged with serving the South African cause.

@@girodleo31 I'm with you AND I'm also a South Africa supporter! I watched the game with an eye on the ref and also thought; "Whoops, that doesn't look right!" And much like the times when the Springboks have had a rough time with the ref, I've walked away from the spectacle and wondered what could have been. That is why I like Rassie's posture towards referees. "Let's make it easier for them to ref the game." because in all honesty, the rules have made it more difficult to ref while the spectacle and safety have improved immensely, so the only thing the players can do is to play in a manner more conducive for eliminating controversy.

They obviously did. Congratulations to South Africa, they are a great team indeed. But all non french fans have to understand that this game, in the french collective psyche, nourrishes a feeling of a prevalent unfair treatment by the refs in this sport. 1995, 2011, now 2023 were hard to take, to say the least. And it's not about being sore losers. France' sport history is full of iconic beautiful losers. In cycling, Raymond Poulidor, who never won the Tour de France, is much more revered than his rival Jacques Anquetil, who had 5. In football, same with Saint-Etienne team in the 70's, which never won the european cup but kept an indefinable aura... It's not about the fact you lost. It's always about HOW you lost.

As good as your analysis is, Squidge, I still don't think people understand what a great game of Rugby we witnessed. France were incredible. They managed to tactically deny the Springboks of scrums & line outs and; combined with aggressive physicality, dominate the collisions. Add in slick passing and you can understand how France scored 3 beautiful tries. On the other side we had the Springboks who absorbed the French onslaught and deprived of their main weapons, sought to use quick counter punches to stay in the fight. Ultimately the great defences of both teams took over and the result was decided on a 52m kick. This has to be the greatest World Cup game ever. It's sad that someone had to lose.

It is illegal to support your bodyweight while performing the jackal. In my view, at the angle we saw, it could go either way. It certainly looks like he's resting on his right hand before he goes for the ball, but then he's able to have both hands on the ball without moving his feet foward. @@kjlovescoffee well inconstency is the major issue when talking of this WC refereeing. Many similar actions ended with a penalty for the defender. At this moment of the game and such an important one the ref can decide the outcome of the match when it should have been the game itself. Again as J.Stransky put it "I thought a few decisions went our way. You have to take the luck when it comes and I would imagine that, for once, Rassie Erasmus is not going to be making a video." And these decisions all along the match went mostly the Boks way as Erasmus has entered into Ben O'Keeffe''s brain. He is still very young and he hopefully will learn of this as well. As a frenchman, I can only salute the Springboks efficiency when it came to punish any mistake made by France. The outcome of the game was so uncertain till the end, I couldn't breathe. This was, yes, probably one of the most epic games of rugby I've ever watched. I wish I had the strength to watch it again, because it deserves it, but I don't. Yet this results in being among the most heartbreaking games in my nation's rugby history (we had our lot already, didn't we ?). Four years is a long wait. Devasted but proud.

I expected the Boks to win, but with a very severe testing by a French team with massive credentials and deserving every respect. What I did not expect to see was a game that from minute to minute was totally unpredictable; a spectacle never to be forgotten and in which every single player from both sides had moments of sheer genius or herculian ability and skill. France did not lose this game, it just did not win it, and SA did not win this game, it simply did not lose it. I am 76 years old now and I do not expect to see the equal of this game for the rest of my life. I certainly have not seen the equal of it before and I have always been an avid union player and supporter across a few continents and a lot of years. And while their were some ref issues (as is always the case) it was shared by both teams. Amen.

This is objectively one of those matches where "It could have gone either way" and it is not disingenous to say. I think both teams worked hard to negate each others strengths and that is really it, this French game plan was copy and paste from the All Blacks Vs Boks game at Mt Smart. Keep the pace extremely high in the first quarter of the game, blow them out then bring the subs on and hold out. It has to be the best rugby union match ever played, it simply has to be. The ability of the Boks to counterpunch in this game as opposed to that one kept them in the fight and in the second half they just slowed the game down to a trickle. Bringing on subs, chicanery with the HIA's and just every last bit to not allow the French to get into a rhythm, plus the sheer depth of their bench meant that they did not have players on their knees in that last quarter like France did. At the end there Dupont was basically walking and their collisions just lacked the oomph.. they were tired. Same as Ireland vs NZL, they played 30 phases but at walking pace and that is why there turned over, guys were so tired they couldn't get to the clean out and it cost them the game. They just did not have enough quality off the bench. All the teams in the upper echelons are going to have learn one thing from the Boks and All blacks, this is now a 33 man game. Develop your depth so there are no noticeable dips in quality and performance and there is no subsitute for "battle hardened". NZL and SA both brought on world cup WINNERS to close out the games. One thing I saw that reinforces this, I saw on another channel someone point out that for the game against England this weekend, Lukhanyo Am did not make the 23, neither did Canan Moodie, Jean Kleyn, Big Andre, Trevor Nyakane, Jasper Wiese and Grant Williams. All of them would walk into the English starting 15, whilst not a single English player would crack the Boks starting 15. It is honestly mind boggling.

As a French fan it was indeed heartbreaking. I really think France was on top of SA. Just look at how much line break they did. SA really did a great job adapting and canceling French attacks. The way Eben locks player into the rucks is amazing. And the forwards trap to isolate French from their supports was genius But still France keep attacking and keep the ball for the most time. I think France had their chance but lost too many occasions on small errors. But with all the mistakes and all the counters they only lose by 1pt. It shows the determination they put to game. About the ref... France is crazy about it and i am curious about what you as an impartial watcher think.

Mate ! How much do you absolutely love rugby? For a scrawny little bugger you have an amazing rugby brain. Love you. Keep going. We are enjoying your channel.

One major fact is that the French completely failed to adapt to the ref (I’m not talking about supposed errors or bias), especially his interpretation of ruck laws; this is a professional fault for both the coaching staff during the preparation and the captain during the match as they had the Uruguay match to learn - Dupont wasn’t playing so he can be forgiven for lacking first hand experience. I reckon the Saffa tricks (scrum on clear from 22, the tap&go, etc.) kept them baffled and unable to focus on getting back in the game in the second half when they lost momentum. Another thing is the relative lack of experience of the French compared to the South Africans, even if players from Toulouse and La Rochelle know how to handle knockout games; players like Penaud, Bielle-Biarrey or particularly Jalibert were a bit off at times and it may not have been just opposite pressure but also the weight of the occasion. All in all, a great match to close a great weekend of rugby, as a Frenchman I’m obviously sad of the result but I’ll gladly cheer for the Boks on Saturday. The only really, really sad thing (it’s only sports after all) is that we don’t get to enjoy more of France, Ireland or Fiji (or Japan or Portugal); too bad there is no Plate or Shield side competition as for the 7s!

A much more balanced view. A 1-point defeat is the toughest thing to experience, because there are so many factors in a game that could have changed it. I agree that a plate competition between the next 6, instead of a meaningless bronze medal game, would be much more satisfying. I really do not like O'Keefe's interpretations, and I am very worried about him reffing the semifinal.

The French team plays too properly let's say. In top 14 referees are really strict, while international rugby is way too subjective and you see teams like South Africa that use that subjectivity and adapt to it. It's good for them but I find it sad that we do not have the same rules everywhere and that you have to "adapt" to the referees, aka understanding that you can make fault when the referee do not punish them.

Yup. The All Blacks and the Spring boks really showed the depth of what they can do, because as rugby nations their players have just been playing a lot more rugby from a much younger age then the Irish and French. These two tests really showed that you it's hard to beat that kind of experience no matter how much money your government pours into astroturfing a sport.

Great analysis! Spotting things that us normal rugby lovers don't see. Cheers Mate! Go SA!

As a french i can say if the SA score 2 or 3 tries after a bick kick thats ok, if ramos kick touches the sticks and we miss 3 points that s ok but now we have all the footages available about the player who is running towards ramos and we can clearly see thats th SA player is starting running from his own line (we say embut in french but i am not sure about the english word,) he s starting to run at least 5 seconds before ramos is blinking an eye, we can see him running 22 meters and ramos didn t move ok guess what no TMO That s another robbery, so is it unfair game with a yellow card or at least do we play the kick again . We can see that fact on many footages that s a fact and for those who think that we will win the next cup in australia, never.....

We have the footage yes. Him and Ramos use to play together. Use your brain. For what I am about to say next. Kolbe knows ramos, they played together, he knew when he was going to kick. NONE of the footage show that anything illegal was done in repsonse to Kolbe. Take defeat like a man not a bitch. If you can tell me what foltage shows Kolbe was illegal a d it was , i will agree. But you no evidence you are just mad

A beautiful game it was. If you're not french or south african, you've enjoyed it If you're Southafrican it's a fairytale. If you're french, you're mind is f*cked up. I'm a frenchman. I'm just leaving a comment here, as usual, because I love your vid. I will not look at it this time because it's too early. I haven't look at anything about this match for the moment. I won't be able for a long time. I won't even look at the semis. Nothing matters anymore. I love rugby but it's not sane for my brain, a break is needed

can someone show this to Mike Tindall! tell him to watch the 2nd half again. it was a masterclass of recognising the problems faced in the 1st half, addressing those and countering. if progression to the next round was based on flair, jacques and rassie would select accordingly. the bottom line is that the boks controlled the 2nd half after being somewhat shell shocked in the 1st. it was controlled right down to Faf's kick on 79

It's not springboks, it's warthogs. They are not able to get up in the ruck and they even play anti-play by catching the ball carrier while lying in the mud. warthogs
