gonna be honest....Ya gotta choose a side in the 90s. I was NOT a nintendo person growing up, I've only recently gotten into Mario, so this is THE PERFECT thing for people like me. I can actually be UNBIASED when I talk about this movie. Whereas with Sonic, sure I was a little bit biased, I grew up with Sonic, I loved Sonic, still love Sonic, first game was Unleashed incredible....Mario....I didn't really get into him until I got the switch. Late bloomer. I played Pokemon and Kingdom Hearts as a kid. So for ME to be like "wow this actually looks REALLY good" I don't know if that's good or bad yet lol. They want the general audience to be able to enjoy this like with Sonic so I think they're nailing that aspect if even I can get into this just by the trailer. Animation looks incredible. Especially for Illumination.

i love how seriously they portrayed Bowser. sure, there was a touch of comedy at the end of his portion of the trailer, but the trailer immediately established how powerful he is, how evil he is, and sets him up to be a serious villain. i expected them to make him like Robotnick in the Sonic films but i’m glad to see he’s more serious

If Bowser is invading the ice kingdom at the beginning, that implies it's a separate place from the Mushroom Kingdom. That's great. I always liked the idea that the Mushroom Kingdom looked like what we saw in the first Super Mario Bros game, with environments consisting of brick roads, water zones, long bridges, tall mushroom platforms and castles. The NSMB series retconned it and made it seem like the Mushroom Kingdom had all kinds of different environments like deserts, ice, swamps, lava, etc, which never sat right with me. I mean, when Super Mario Bros 3 introduced all those environments for the first time, they were explicitly different neighboring kingdoms, not the one Princess Toadstool rules over. As for Mario being from Brooklyn, I always liked that origin story better than the Yoshi 's Island retcon. The idea of a fat, middle aged, overworked plumber accidentally stumbling upon a pipe and being transported to another world, and getting to become a hero, is just really heartwarming and cool. It fits the bizarre universe of Mario and makes you root for his success.

It's extremely faithful. I kinda love it. The vistas look amazing and it's insanely detailed. It puts the fear back in Bowser. He's that perfect mix of intimidating and self-pleased like in the RPGs. The fact they used the classic penguins for some reason is the hook that tells me they're really using the Mario property well. The penguins being in a serious war and the Toad freakout did feel the most like "generic kid movie" that Arlo criticises. I did get big Illumination vibes there. But, it also kinda feels like they'll have their own charm as the movie goes on. Personally, the word that came to my mind when Mario said "what is this place?" is *whimsy.* I feel like this movie will just be really fun and light and enjoyable, even if it feels a little tropey in parts.

One of the easiest ways to build empathy and connection to a character is to have them explore a new setting with the audience. By making him unfamiliar to the Mushroom Kingdom, it gets the viewer on his team if you will. If he is already familiar with the world around him the viewer has to catch up to the action instead of playing along with them. Probably why they did that.

Mario has 3 different origins depending on were you go. Origin 1. He is from New York and was transported to the mushroom kingdom. This version is also jumpman from donkey Kong Origin 2. He was born in the MK suggested by the yoshi games. Origin 3 (basically 2.1). Continuing from the yoshi Origin he was apparently raised in New donk city (the Mario world equivalent of New York) were he is still jumpman and the one who saves pauline (before just coming to live in the MK; I guess?) That last one is the current origin supported by Mario odyssey while the first is supported by the og game's game manual
@Noisy_Cricket2 жыл бұрын
Could be that there are some limited number of people that can transit between the world the Mushroom Kingdom (and New Donk City) exist in and the "real" world. Mario could have been born in the MK (although a stork is delivering him to his "parents" so we don't actually know where he was "born" in YI), but raised in the real world in BKNY. I think this would be an interesting concept to explore, but I definitely don't trust either Nintendo or Illumination to handle it well, as it would just end up being another poor 80's style trope- which is basically what the original movie was (although the cartoon did okay with the concept).

Also your nephew's reaction was hilariously cute.

So I was rewatching the trailer over and over last night and came to a realization. I believe there is a very good reason as to why Chris Pratt is using his “regular voice”. If you listen very very closely to Pratt’s Mario, he has an ever so slight New York accent, especially in the “Mushroom kingdom, here we come” line. Now think. In the original lore of Mario, he was a plumber of Italian decent but was born and raised in Brooklyn. The only reason that he doesn’t sound like one today is because Charles Martinet crashed the Audition and decided to do something different then your stereotypical grouchy New Yorker, and they loved it so much they gave him the job. Couple this with the fact in the Trailer Mario clearly doesn’t know what the Mushroom Kingdom is and seemingly arrived by accident. Pair that with the fact one of the first leaks we ever had of the movie was Sebastian Maniscalco revealing that he is playing the character Foreman Spike, a human construction worker from the game Wrecking Crew, and claimed that the character is “Mario & Luigi’s Boss”. Mario has a normal, New York accented voice, because he’s just a normal guy from Brooklyn. He’s not a fanciful mushroom kingdom wahoo man, at least not yet as of the story of the film. Mirroring the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, Jim and Luigi are just dudes from New York, this is just their origin story. I think we could very well see Mario & Luigi come from an animated New York and arrive in the Mushroom Kingdom via some magical pipe or sewer tunnel, and they clearly get seperate done the process.

Arlo… we’ve always known, the bros are from Brooklyn NY. Not sure if this specific canon was just related to the cartoon from the 80s/90s(don’t remember the year), but they were just regular plumbers from Brooklyn, until they were warped to the mushroom kingdom during a call to fix someone’s plumbing. Even if that wasn’t the case, the instruction booklet that came with Super Mario Bros. always stated that they were brought from our world to the mushroom kingdom, and it’s likely going to be that origin for the movie.

The lore about them being from Brooklyn specifically was more of a concept by Nintendo of America and the Dic cartoons than from the developers like Miyamoto and Tezuka. Mario has the Brooklyn accent, but it remains to be seen if they straight up name drop Brooklyn or decide to say he's from New Donk City to keep things removed from the literal real world. Even so, the accent is a nod to the Brooklyn origins no matter where they decide where Mario's homeland actually is. There's that old anime that I believe is the first Mario Bros. adaptation ever where he gets sucked into the Mushroom Kingdom through his TV while playing his Famicom, so who knows lol.

I genuinely heard kind of a New York inflection in Pratt’s Mario voice. I genuinely think they’re going the Super Mario Bros. Super Show route of Mario and Luigi being from Brooklyn. I know that may make people upset, but I grew up with that and I love it!
@orbic5212 жыл бұрын
It might be an equivalent where he's from New Donk City (?)
@Riptide272 жыл бұрын
@@orbic521 Could be! But my 30+ nostalgic self is hoping for Brooklyn. Animated Brooklyn, of course. Not some lame real human gets sucked into a pipe and turns into animated Mario or something that stupid…

I'm glad Pratt didn't go over the top for Mario. The "Its a me!" voice would be irritating for a feature length movie.

I’m really excited to hear more of what they do with Bowser’s dialogue, Jack Black is doing a great job expressing him! They really captured the power of a king of koopas and it’s nice to see his villainous personality highlighted here. I could definitely see elements like the battleships incorporated really well.

I had low hopes since it was Illumination, but I must admit that they have done a solid job with the rendering and animation.

nephew vision is such a trip… mostly, we’re all grown up, unable to turn off the cynical, multilayered way in which we watch this things. Producers, financial incentives, actors reputations, promotional deals, timing… Nephew just enjoys the product detached from the real world. Child wonder :)

Mario's face immediately reminded me of the 1986 animated movie. It's a bit different but I like it.

I'm also a grump about movies, but this trailer won me over too. I thought it was gonna be sarcastic and hokey, but it looks genuine. I'm here for a heartfelt Mario adventure.

"We've never seen the penguins from Mario live in a city!" - Arlo, of all people, forgetting about Shiver City from Paper Mario.
@MistahFox2 жыл бұрын
I don't know how, but they made Bowser and Mario look like their voice actors while still being faithful to the artstyle

I like how Arlo brought in his nephew for this. Older fans tend to forget they're not the target audience any more, so it's nice to hear an opinion from a kid.

Mario lives in Brooklyn in the movie. So he might have came from there Also I'm pretty sure they didn't pitch anyone's voice. Which means Keegan did the the actual voice
@DonkeyBoyVids2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was pretty sure Keegan just did that, though it might be difficult for him to actually do i believe that he could make his voice do that

@@DonkeyBoyVids there's a video of him going so high pitched he sounds like Toad from modern Mario games. Prettt sure this is, if not close, to a cakewalk for him

Did they say he's from Brooklyn? He's probably from New Donk City which could have it's own version of Brooklyn. But I doubt he's from "the real world"

The hardest part is doing a voice for Link. How do you overcome that facet of Link’s entire persona?
@BrianWalker932 жыл бұрын
Its very likely we will get one considering Nintendo just bought an entire film company. We're very likely seeing the beginning of a Nintendo Cinematic Universe. Which, if they do it, they could easily have a grand excuse to make an actual Super Smash Bros. movie out of it all.
@Joshfour42 жыл бұрын
@@Novarcharesk Giving Link any voice would take some getting used to, so it’s either that or just make him mute and have that be a part of his character.

I agree that this looks great but with Zelda I would prefer either live action or studio ghibli style.
@Yee-erOfHaws2 жыл бұрын
Honestly having a Mario movie that looks like it'll do amazingly will most certainly open up the door for so many other Nintendo movies to be made, especially if that Donkey Kong movie is also being made. We could get movies about Zelda, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Metroid, or even Splatoon, given enough time. Eventually it'd probably feel like Illumination's milking another cash cow but it'd still be awesome to see different Nintendo reps getting their own movies.
@neonbeta10122 жыл бұрын
This makes me hopeful that Nintendo can crank out GOOD Nintendo movies. I really want to see a Metroid movie in the future, I feel like that would be their magnum opus if they play their cards right.

he's OBVIOUSLY coming from the 'real' world. there's no reason to assume he doesn't when that's BEEN his origin story in different adaptations and the fact that I don't think he'd be so shocked seeing the mushroom kingdom if he already lives in this fantasy world

It looks so good to me. I’m a huge fan of how they appear to be taking major inspiration from the super show from the 80s, but adapting it into a modern kids movie with modern Mario designs and characters, and super huge voice actors and actresses. Super hyped. Also it just looks SO BEAUTIFUL!
