Just a note - She writes all the songs, plays the keys, arranges, produces, and is heavily involved in her stage and video productions. Her songs are often about unusual topics, interesting stories or little pieces of poetry. She really is a fantastically talented person beyond the typical pop singer.

One fact that blows my mind is that she was the first ever singer to use a wireless headset microphone. Her stage engineer designed it out of a wire coat hanger for Kate as she was so determined to dance freely while she sang during her tour in 79. Britney has a lot to thank them for!

They keep referring to the original recording that they heard initially…I wish they would listen to the newer version on “The Whole Story” album. It just has smoother sound to it, and it makes a huge difference. Either way, I absolutely love this song, and the book is one of my favorites of all time, so there’s that. Really wonder why newer teachers these days don’t know more about the classics in literature.

Appreciate you guys for giving Kate Bush another chance🔥 Written by Kate herself, "Babooshka" (1980; the word in English is translated to "grandma") is a story about a woman who "tests" her husband by writing anonymous, perfume-scented love letters. After seeing him enthused by these parcels, the wife continues the ruse by arranging a meeting with her hubby in disguise. Throughout this situation, husband (not knowing that it is his wife) is reminded of his significant other when she was young and passionate. Kate is a musical genius/artist through and through: singer-songwriter, dancer, mime, pianist, actress, produced, musical arranger, etc. I think it is long overdue for you both to listen/watch the song/music video "Don't Give Up" (1986). This is off of Peter Gabriel's iconic 1986 album "So." "Don't Give Up" is a duet between Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush that is, without giving too much away, a powerful and uplifting song that everyone can relate to, especially in these hard and uncertain times. Elton John was noted to say that he listened to this song religiously to help him conquer his addictions. I myself listen to this track whenever I am down and going through rough patches in my life. I know you both will love this collaboration between these two iconic and legendary artists of Art/Progressive Pop/Rock

I like the idea of Kate’s world being an “art museum”, because that’s exactly true. She has what’s called “auteur” control over her vision, movement, and sound. She’s a total artist whose complete vision is unmistakable. Similarly, David Bowie and Bjork are considered auteurs in the music world.

This is one of my favorite Kate Bush songs. The thing to remember about Wuthering Heights is that it's about a piece of classic English literature. That may seem presumptuous to the American audience, but to the Brits, its much more of a piece of pop culture - everyone knows it. If you're not familiar with the story, maybe check it out before your next listen. The book is quite a read. There are many film adaptations from 1920 to 2011. Or there must be a synopsis on KZbin somewhere. Basically, it's a Gothic ghost story. The ethereal voice fits much better when you know that.

I was fortunate to see her concert in 2014, and holy… er, goodness, was that a wild ride. She started and finished with sets of her old faves (~3,000 people singing along to Cloud-busters will blow your mind). But the middle section of the show was two mini-plays she’d written around new songs. I think the first one started with recordings of bird-song, and Kate Bush repeating the notes back 🤯. Then her son sang the part of a painter, singing about beauty and so forth, and there was a person-sized puppet of a drawing mannequin, and she sang the part of the mannequin 🙃. And then the second play was about a family who’s wife/mother is lost at sea in a plane crash - and for part of that performance, she was back-stage floating in a big pool with life vest, and they filmed her singing and fed the live feed to a screen on the stage 😱😵‍💫 You certainly can’t accuse her of being boring.

I think some people may not realise how much Kate Bush does, she is not just the singer. She composed both the music and lyrics, played the piano and the synths on it, jointly produced this song and the album, did the choreography of the video and also as it happens sang the song both lead and some backing vocals. On the currently popular "Running Up That Hill" it's a similar story, composing both lyrics and music, playing those "strange 80's" sounding synths many like, solo producing it, singing again both the lead and backing vocals. That RUTH video was choreographed by Diane Grey though. The Babooska story is the case of an originally very happily married woman as she ages a bit thinks her husband has lost the longing for her so she decides to test his love by sending him secret, flirtatious, 'love' letters where she calls herself Babooska. "She wanted to test her husband. She knew exactly what to do: A pseudonym to fool him. She couldn't have made a worse move. " He doesn't know who it is writing to him but he gets a little excited as they do remind him of his wife when they first met. Sadly for her he does seem to like receiving them, although he is still in love with the woman he originally married and these letters do remind him of her. The wife decides as Babooska to invite him to a restaurant to see if he is faithful, sadly for her he turns up and the strange smashing sound is meant to be the wife throwing most of the restaurant at her husband. The end of a marriage due to a mis-step made by both partners.

Happy Birthday Amber! I hope that you have had a wonderful time today? By the way, Kate Bush is a Leo too, as am I. 🙂 Babooshka, is Russian for Grand Mother, the story is about a woman who is feeling old and unattractive so she tries to test her husband to see if he is loyal to her so, she writes him romantic letters signed 'Babooshka', something in the letters he finds attractive, what he finds attractive are the qualities of his wife when she was younger, the sounds at the end are of her smashing the glass which is hiding her as she reveals herself to him. Kate Bush started song writing at the age of 13, she studied mine and interpretive dance with Lindsay Kemp the man who taught David Bowie amongst many others. Another one of hers to check out is, 'Sensual World', and her duet with Peter Gabriel 'Don't Give Up'.

If you revisit ‘Wuthering Heights’ try the 4K remastered video of her 1979 live performance in Manchester (the closing song at the end of a 3 hour concert). A bit of context might help you better appreciate it. She is portraying a ghost, hence the affected high pitch vocals. This was a 19 year old young woman winning her fight with the record company on what song to release as her first ever single. EMI wanted to release ‘The Man With The Child In His Eyes’ first but Kate insisted it should be ‘Wuthering Heights’. EMI relented thinking the song’s expected failure would teach Kate a lesson. Instead it went to No. 1 and stayed there for four weeks.

Happy birthday Amber 🥳🎂 I adore Kate Bush, but you do have to be careful where you start. I wouldn't say she is an acquired taste, but I would definitely say that it's good to allow your appreciation to build. If I may, I would recommend Night of the Swallow, off The Dreaming. Fantastic song, and a cool story.

Happy Birthday Amber. Love Kate Bush performances. I remember this as a teenager when it was released. Great song about wife testing husband and he falling for her incognito, which was who she used to be. Loved the second costume which is taken almost exactly from a book cover of Raven, Swordmistress of Chaos. Sword, dagger and ridiculous “armour” 🤣, although a bit more of the latter or it would have been banned!

Kate is simply wonderful. She has such dedicated fans in the UK. She releases new albums rarely and they always sell out straightaway. She toured once in 79, and then not until 2014 when she did a few concerts. Apparently these sold out within 15 minutes! Her music is always evolving and just gets better and better. So many artists have wanted to work with her. And on top of that, she seems a very humble and genuinely lovey human being. One song I think you should definitely try out is Cloudbusting. Again, a very interesting story and video to go with it.

So many female artists have drawn inspiration from Kate Bush, she really is a true artist and was always pushing the boundries of 'acceptable' pop music. 'This Womans Work' and 'Dont Give Up' are def both awesome songs for showing her talent as a singer but I also love the Hounds of Love album. Its def worth listening to the second half (the Ninth Wave), esp if you have read up on what its supposed to about first...its like free form poetry set to music.

I would say that from all the music I have listened to Kate Bush is the most talented female artist, a difficult one to get into at first but when you really start listening she is magical. And she won't get you on the dance floor 😅 but it's all about the music with Kate Bush.

Also her duet with Peter Gabriel, ‘Don’t Give Up’ (an intense yet simple vid clip goes with it). May need tissues with that one. This is a great song(and video) I got into Kate Bush after watching your reaction to "Wuthering Heights" 😀 In The video and song for "Wuthering Heights" she's playing the Ghost Cathy from the Classic novel "of the same name. Her singing in that song is supposed to be the ghost of cathy singing to Heathcliff. I read the novel after watching ya'lls reaction and then totally understood the song. There is even a Kate Bush "Wuthering Heights day where people dress like her and dance to the song 😀 There's videos of it here on You Tube 😀

I'm really glad Wuthering Heights is still taking people to the original novel, thanks for posting that Stephen. Like most people I didn't know much about it when the song arrived in 1978, I had that vague knowledge of it being a dry Victorian-era novel of awkward clothes and awkward manners and I think my knowledge was as much informed by a Monty Python's Flying Circus sketch from earlier in the 70s which involved Cathy and Heathcliff signalling to each other across the wild and windy moors of Yorkshire using semaphore flag signals ("O.H. C.A.T.H.Y." in flag signals from him, and then the camera zoomed in to her on another hill... "O.H. H.E.A.T.H.C.L.I.F.F." she replies in flag signals... it was a slow sketch, but very funny) as much as by the novel. I eventually read it years later, maybe in the 90s, and was amazed to find it was an easy read and a great ghost story, I would recommend it (but then, I enjoyed War and Peace, twice) btw, I've always had a sneaking suspicion the Monty Python sketch influenced Kate's video for Wuthering Heights, easpecially at the end when she waves as she fades away. Monty Python was *huge* in the UK in the early 70s, I'm sure Kate would have watched it on a Sunday night and talked about it on Monday morning at school, we all did. I don't think people quite appreciate Kate's sense of humour...

You're both right about Kate Bush being a true artist, and this is quite a subversive and dark song. It's the story of a wife testing her husband's fidelity by assuming the role of Babooshka, an exotic other woman. The wife sends him "scented letters" first and then "arranges a place to go" where she dresses incognito as the Babooshka character, all to see if her husband remains faithful to her. I don't think he passes the test!

You pretty much have nailed the story line of the song. There are certain songs by Kate Bush that you will notice that she will use key words to express a specific emotion. In this case Babushka, the word is used to express outrage and almost hysterical anger. Of course she plays a completely different character during the chorus where her eyes get big and wide. This is definitely a song where the video is helpful in the story telling.
