Kate shouldn't be compared to Paula Abdul or Janet Jackson -- Kate is more akin to Prince where her vision is clear and she follows her muse -- she writes all her own material, plays piano, Fairlight and self-produces, expresses herself through dance & video. She is a genius and has a great influence on today's music, many disparate artists cite her as a favorite. Her voice is incredible with tremendous emotion, power and range. Kate invokes the divine feminine energy. A true original.

Fun Fact: It's because of Kate Bush that pop stars nowadays have clip-on microphones. See, Kate Bush was the first pop star to use a cordless mic (handheld, but still, cordless,) and she asked some tech guys to make it for her, because she's not just a singer, but also a dancer. She wanted to hold a mic in her hand and still be able to dance, without being tripped up by a cord. And so, they created the Cordless MIc, for Kate Bush, and it took off. And now, we have tiny little nearly invisible mics that hang on our foreheads. All thanks to Kate Bush and what she requested to be able to sing AND dance at the same time.
@johnlongeway10372 жыл бұрын
Running Up That Hill is having a resurgence due to being featured in Stranger Things. She has now had top 10 singles in 6 decades! She wrote Wuthering Heights when she was a teen-ager and that vocal is intended to evoke the ghost of Cathey, howling outside the window as she does in the novel (and the movie that inspired the song.) I find it helps to realize that Kate is an artiste with a capital A and that music is her medium. And listen to that vocal range! Contrast this to the original vocal for Wuthering Heights! She isn't a pop star but a performance artist who uses music as her medium. She had huge success at age 18, built a studio in her home, and since that time she just makes the music she wants to make. The Sensual World is probably her most approachable album for the main stream American audience.

Because her voice is so distinct, and she's so artful in other ways, I often feel like the complexity and originality of her compositions gets taken for granted. She's as unique as Peter Gabriel, or David Bowie, or Lou Reed--but because she's female she gets classed as a 'unique singer.' Yet we don't think of U2 just being Bono's voice, as distinct as it is. But their sound is also about Edge's guitar and particularly the songwriting. Kate deserves the same respect. Like them or not, her songs could easily be identified as hers, and there is only a very famous few performer/songwriters that can say they are their own genre.
@patrickb47502 жыл бұрын
Running Up That Hill was solely written by Kate Bush, only the 30th top 10 hit of the last decade to be written by one person, and it's the first top 10 hit to be written by one woman since "Dance Monkey" by Tones & I in 2020. She also produced it by herself as well, which is VERY rare. The last #1 hit to be produced by one woman was "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys, which was released in 2001.

Jennifer Jacobs In some cases the lyrics don't help. Take "Moments Of Pleasure" for example. If one was not familiar with the back story of all the people she sings of, it could be quite perplexing. Kate doesn't always spell it out to us as if we're idiots. Her lyrics give the listener more credit. If you understand them, that's great, but she's always thought provoking.

What? You actually made me pull up the lyrics to see if I missed something. I didn't. There is no basis for your interpretation. This style of dance would be considered "Modern" and/or "Interpretive". The basic meaning of the song is to explore "what if I could switch places with someone else (or another gender), how much more would I understand about them?" Apparently she also specifically used the phrase "make a deal with God" because so many times in literature, this kind of concept is presented as a person who made a deal with the devil. Bush wanted to say that it's so much more powerful to make a deal with God.

so glad to see that Kate Bush is getting a fraction of the respect she has always deserved, when we listen to most artists, we tend to compare - 'oh, this sounds sort of like that...' - you can't do that with Kate, she is beyond reference points. she is challenging, but - if it connects - it is so worth it. Hounds of Love is wonderful, The Man With the Child in His Eyes as well, & her duet with Peter Gabriel (Don't Give Up) is breathtaking...

@vengeful_pluto55862 жыл бұрын
0-0 well you got the general tone. The main theme is that love and understanding can only go so far before it's limited by the lack of experience in the other person's perspective. She literally is asking to make a deal with God to swap places with the person she loves. "Running up the hill" refers to making societal progress, likely towards women's rights. This song was almost blacklisted when it came out, it was made in the 80s, which is when the last not stupid women's rights movement was made

Amber nailed it! Her early songs she used dance and mime to add a visual experience to her songs. The first song you did was a ghost talking to her lover from the Emily Bronte book. Kate's Breathing video starts with an infant in the womb, and the effects of a nuclear blast. Dave Gilmore from Pink Floyd discovered her when she was 16. The song The Man With the Child in his Eyes was a song she wrote when she was 14 years old. That's a great video as well. Glad to see that you are starting to understand her style. Her first six albums are packed with amazing stuff!

💕Kate Bush!!! This song is about making a deal with God to swap lives with another person. Bush explained in a 1985 interview: "It's about a relationship between a man and a woman. They love each other very much, and the power of the relationship is something that gets in the way. It creates insecurities. It's saying if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem." Bush wrote this with the title "Deal With God." Her label made her change it because they didn't think radio stations would play a song with "God" in the title. Bush still regrets letting them rename her song, but her previous album didn't do very well and she wanted to make sure the song got airplay.

This was the album that got me into Kate Bush. I knew of her before that namely through the fandom built around her in the comic book and fantasy circles, but never got into her whole "Oh, England, My Leotard" period. HOUNDS OF LOVE (where this song comes from) really changed my mind and I then went back through her earlier work and realized what I was missing. This song, dealing with wanting to help someone going through emotional distress by switching places with them and taking the burden away from them, is just perfection.
