@@VKrulikoski Alex had originally decided to make her roommate his girlfriend because of the math of doing so (she was a perfect fit) and while dating her fell in love with Tracy Pollan's character. She had a boy friend but they found themselves originally hating each other but slowly falling for each other. At a dance they shared a dance and a kiss, at which point she ran off upset. She was leaving to change schools to be with her boy friend and he chased her down to tell her how he felt. That's when the song was played, while he was considering whether to do that or not. He thought she had left on the train when she came out of the bathroom, deciding she couldn't leave him. The interesting part about the song was that it was used in the show but wasn't on a record anywhere, someone on the show had heard it and got a recording for it. Then people started calling in requesting it on radio stations to such a level that they quickly rushed out the live album with the song on it and it was a huge hit. Billy went on to do a couple of popular songs for the movie Blind Date as well as have a role in the movie The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai.

Hey. Thanks for your comments. I agree with your thoughts on “sampling without permission”. I could tell what you were feeling early on when you said something about chills and pulled your hair. I can’t find it now but somewhere on the internet there is something about the sampling, perhaps in the KZbin comments. I didn’t know the song when it first hit, but about 10 years ago the band I was in played it for a few years. I listened to the Billy Vera version a few times to get the sense of it, but most of the other 100 times or so was our band doing it. I loved watching the audience dancing to it then stopping and watching in awe of the last 30 seconds. Our guy, a trumpet player, nailed it. Thanks

Billy Vera wrote the song "At This Moment" in 1977 while living in New York. Vera was inspired by a younger woman he was dating who told him about her breakup with a previous boyfriend. Vera and his band, Billy Vera & the Beaters, recorded the song live in 1981 during a series of performances at the Roxy in West Hollywood. Used twice in Family Ties

The song was recorded and released as a single in 1981, where it went all the way to... #79. It was used In the 1985-86 season of Family Ties and became quite popular, but it was out of print at that point. Rhino reissued the single and it went to number one..Looks like the Bebe Winans song is from 2000 or so.

Billy Vera and the band wrote this song in the mid 70s. It never went anywhere, so when FAMILY TIES offered to buy the songs rights in 1985, they did so, hoping to cash in somehow on the song. After the prom scene with Michael J Fox and his date, This song was an instant hit. Billy and the Beaters never got any of the royalties from the recording, and the song is still owned by NBC.

I think it's cool when things are sampled as long as the original writers are given credit and asked for permission. You might be surprised if you look at the credits to the gospel song it probably has Billy Vera in it as a writer. I also think samples are good to introduce you to other songs that you would have never known about otherwise. Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve sampled an orchestra rendition of a Rolling Stones song. But my❤ favorite part of sampling is when someone puts in a part of a great song you had forgotten and even brings you back to your childhood and you discover the original artist all over again. For example, Flo Rida's "I Cry" sampled Brenda Russel's 80s hit "Piano in the Dark". It was actually a song I kept trying to remember the name of for a looong time (I was a child when it came out) but couldn't ever figure it out until the Flo Rida song came out. So there's good aspects to sampling.

Wow. I just looked up BeBe Winans' "Stand" and heard it. Ty, I don't know which song came first, but it is quite obvious that the similarity is unquestionable. I don't even want to know, now, who "stole" from who (but I have a pretty good idea). Both songs are about despair -- "Stand" is about hope; "At This Moment" is about heartbreak. Both are very moving. I think the second song (whichever it is) was inspired by the first, and it doesn't seem to me like a conscious effort to steal anything, but to take something and mold something else out of it. When artists do this, though, I think they should give due credit to the source. The original songwriter shouldn't have to take the second one to court and sue him in order to get that credit, and remuneration, if that's what they want. That's the way I see it, anyway. Enjoyed your video about it.

Billy Vera wrote this song and was singing it in clubs, it was recorded in one of these clubs live. He wrote the song in 1980, and was played on Family Ties in 1981, not sure when your guy did his similar sounding version, if my search is correct it says: "BeBe Love & Freedom" - Gospel vocalist BeBe Winans follows up 1997's Bebe Winans with a decent second release, entitled Love and Freedom. He aims to discover his own musical perfection while trying to ignore the massive success of his gospel singing family. Love and Freedom is spirited with urban loops and heavy soul, but BeBe lacks spark."
