The original plan for Live Aid was for Mick and David to perform this song live from the two Live Aid locations; Mick at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia and David at Wembley Stadium in London. Unfortunately technology of the day made that impossible; there was too much of a delay. They couldn't sync up. So that's why they had to pre-record the video ahead of time

It's awful and beyond cheesy. It goes against both artists’ talent and previous work. Bowie went commercial after his Berlin years, and Mick became a caricature of his once-great self. It's an undeniable low point for both.

The reason they vibe together so well is by this time they'd been friends for decades. Not just friends, either; they've both confirmed they were one of each other's conquests back in the anything-goes days of the 70's. So they have an extremely comfortable and meshed vibe in this video. They probably didn't even rehearse.

Mick performed it with Tina Turner at Live Aid, there is footage of that. Around the same time period there was a duet featuring Elton John & Millie Jackson (no relation) called "Act Of War". Millie was popular on R&B radio, mainly in the 1970s, she didn't really have any Top 40 pop crossover. Check out "Sun City" too by Artists United Against Apartheid.

This is a cover from the early 60s Motown hit song from "Martha and The Vandellas." It was a great song. Mick Jagger and David Bowie are (were) tight friends (Both are British) and worked on one another's songs, and albums over almost 50 years, until David's recent death a few years ago. I'll never forget the interview I heard with Mick Jagger talking about the time David Bowies' wife came home unexpectedly, only to find Mick and David in bed together. That isn't my cup of tea...but I like their music.

The song is about riots in the 60s.... Politics in music was banned in music during the Vietnam war period

When this cover came out, some smirked. But most of us just loved the funk and the fun they present in this song/video. 😊

don't think i've watched that since the time period when it was new. I watched the live aid broadcast on tv with my mom. They played that video alot in between stage acts. It was my introduction to a lot of bands at the time. I was thrilled with Jagger, he also did a stage performance with Tina Turner, in which he was similarly animated. My mother was most impressed by "that guy with the mustache.... he could really sing!" i was 9 at the time.

I'm sure they basically had 1 night when they could get together to do "a video" due to commitments, they raised loads for live aid too. Please please watch Queen's Live aid performance 🙏

I can't hear this song without thinking of the Family Guy episode when they showed this music video and Peter said, "1985 brought us the gayest music video of all time". Then after the video he said, "That happened, and we all let it happen". LMAO! Still, it's 37 years later and Dancing in the Street is still one of the silliest and most fun music videos to watch. Thanks RSR!

This was originally done by Martha and The Vandellas in the early 60’s. You should watch their video. Old Motown songs that rock bands covered.

I can remember watching the Live Aid concert when this came on my dad called from the other room "Is that Mick Jagger singing Dancing in the Street?". He came and watched this while he had ignored every other performance from Live Aid except his favorite Beach Boys.

“That happened. And we all LET it happen.” - Peter Griffin - That you two guys are slightly younger than me enough to not have the 80s allergy that I do … I suppose I envy you. It was things like this, Billy Ocean and also that diet coke ad with Elton John and Paula Abdul that made Nirvana feel like salvation.

This cover of the song originally by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas was recorded for charity in 1985 as part of the Band Aid/USA for Africa campaign and the video (filmed in just a few takes in less than two hours) premiered in the middle of the Live Aid concerts at Wembley and Philadelphia on the 13 July 1985.
