That is called a talk box. It is a tube connected to a little box that is also connected to your amp. You can get those really cool sounds while you play your guitar or keyboard. You just put your mouth on the tube and move your mouth. You don't have to blow into it or anything. 🔥🔥

Had the chance to see him a few years ago……he was having so much fun. It was easy to see the 20-something kid in this video standing there…and I was suddenly 16 again, at his feet singing Do You Feel with him and having him smile down at me. One of a kind beautiful person.

I saw his Never Say Never show a couple of months ago. He’s 73 and has to sit to perform because of his muscle disease but he sounds exactly like he did in 1976. He’s amazing!

The Voice Box is a small echo chamber type device that feeds the guitar notes through that tube to his mouth. You can change the pitch and tone of the note by changing the shape of your mouth in front of the vocal microphone. I was 12 years old and playing drums when I saw this live on The Midnight Special. It was the most groundbreaking and revolutionary live performance we had ever seen up that time.

This performance was just before Frampton Comes Alive was released. He was still not well known at this time. His record company was hoping the live album would be his first to go Gold, 500,000 copies. But it sold 20 million instead. ❤ The folks watching this performance were watching history in the making

Great choice - Frampton Comes Alive was one of those albums that everyone had in their collection back in the day, and was the biggest-selling live album for a long time, not sure if it still is. It's a voice box. the guitar amp sends the sound through the tube then the singer manipulates the sound with his mouth. Then the tweaked sound goes back into the microphone and into the pa system. The singer does not make sound with his vocal cords. Just hold a small speaker like a headphone up to your mouth while music is going through. Then move your lips and mouth in various ways and listen to how it affects the music. that sound would then be rebroadcasted into the PA system. I don't know who came up with the idea but it's real damn cool.

Peter Frampton is a top notch guitarist. He doesn't display it much in this song though. I actually saw this on the Midnight Special back when I was in college. He was the first that I saw use the "talk box". There were others but I believe that he brought it to the main stream.

The device Frampton is using is called a Heil Talk Box. Peter hits a footswitch on the floor, and the guitar audio is routed through a piece of surgical tubing that goes into the mouth, and the microphone picks up the audio coming out of your mouth - your mouth literally shapes the sound. What's amazing is how FAST he switches back and forth between using it, getting that tube in and out of his mouth so he can sing or play through the Talk Box. 🙃

I saw him in 2019 during his farewell tour, which is still happening now due to Covid delays. He has a rare disorder that will make it more difficult for him to play guitar. Great show great performer with one of the top selling albums of all time, Frampton Comes Alive. Good dude also.

He is still playing the notes on guitar, he's "singing" through the Talk Box at the same time, so yeah the difficulty goes way up. It's something that requires a lot of practice.

A talk-box, a tube taped beside his mic that runs to a speaker or other device (idk, lol) he can take in his lips and combine guitar and vocal sounds. More widely used at various, and earlier times than you might expect. Check out "King Family, talking steel guitar." Other users include Jeff Beck, Joe Perry (Aerosmith), and Richie Samborra (Bon Jovi).

Frampton is great. However, you want funk, watch and listen to the Prince cover of Play That Funky Music at, I believe, the Hollywood Bowl. Even if you don't cover it on the channel, it is worth a listen and view on your own time. He is very natural and Uber entertaining in this earlier performance. 🇨🇦🤗
