Ok to describe the talk box. Its a box with a speaker built in it. A long 1/2 inch tube going to the mouth. So what yur hearing is the sound he's playin comin thru the box thru the tube into his mouth into the mic. The was a studio crowd very small an very lucky.

Kathy here - love watching the younger generation discovering the music I grew up on! He is using a voice box tip he puts in his mouth to emulate the guitar and sing. Joe Walsh also used it. Loved your reaction and the smile on your face my generation of music gave you. By the way, I am 68 years old. Also, the radio version of this was over 7 minutes long, the album version is over 14 minutes!

The “Frampton Comes Alive” album was very popular during my high school years (Class of ‘78). Everybody knew every word and note on it. I’m so glad you got an introduction to his live work. Frampton is 9 years older than me. In 1976, I was in the age group who were not really (then) aware of his earlier success with Humble Pie nor his previous solo work. When his live album was released it was the first exposure to him for millions of kids my age. Rather unusual for a live album (but we could not help ourselves 😀 ). It hit us like a combination of a freight train and a huge breath of fresh air. Thank you, Sarah!

The talk box device takes advantage of the unique qualities of the human mouth and vocal tract and lends them to instruments. I was at the 7/2/77 show in Oakland. Frampton was the headliner, and did a great job, but most of the crowd that day was there to see Lynyrd Skynyrd, who stole the show. It was kind of sad to see maybe 2/3 of the crowd leave after Skynyrd finished. The Outlaws and Santana were also there, before Skynyrd. Frampton always gave a fantastic live performance of Do you Feel Like We Do, but somehow I've always liked the original studio version the best.

The Talk Box looks magical, but it's simpler than it seems. His guitar output is split between his amp and the talk box, which is seen on the floor by his feet. Inside the talk box is a small speaker that pipes its sound through the tube that extends up Peter's mic stand. When Peter puts the tube in his mouth, the sound is reflected into his microphone. He can change the sound by changing the shape of his mouth. Then, that sound is recombined with the guitar sound in his guitar amp, making Peter's guitar speak.

If you ever tried this, you would learn real quick it's not simple. It's not overly complicated, but you can't make noise except on consonants, or it sounds awful. It takes quite a bit of practice to just get that part down, otherwise everyone would have been mastering it, not just Peter Frampton, Zapp and Roger Troutman. There's a girl I seen do it with a violin, lol. Anyways, I love the sound and wish someone would bring it back because Autotune sounds like a very cheap imitation of it.

Unfortunately Frampton left the band after the “Live at the Fillmore” double album was recorded (an awesome album by the way!). Dave (Clem) Clempson formerly of Jon Hiseman’s band Colosseum replaced Peter, and he is the guitarist on “Black Coffee” - which is certainly worth a listen!

Old style voice synthesizer. It was one of the first songs using synthesized vocals. It was a "talk box" connected to his amp. Aerosmith used one on their song "Sweet Emotion" the year before Frampton. The whole song is about a hangover... waking up with a glass of wine and not knowing how he got there or where the wine came from .

The Midnight Special was a TV production with a somewhat controlled audience reaction. This song on his album "Frampton Comes Alive" is a little longer but with great crowd interaction and is definitely wort a listen.

I remember back then, the audience was told to keep the noise to a very low level or they'd have to leave. It didn't work for Ed Sullivan when the Beatles were on his show!

The Midnight Special was a regular television program to present then contemporary rock artists. The producers wanted "clean" presentations for air - no audience interference which is why they are seated and quiet for the most part. I agree, that was just simply wrong for Peter Frampton and this song!

The comment made by MEC is a good description of the talk box that makes Peter's guitar sound like a voice. I would just add one thing. It can be used with any instrument played through an amplifier, although it's usually used with guitar.

It’s called the talk box. ❤ there are only a few artists that used this amazing technique. There are some R& B groups in the 80’s that have used this too. Check out midnight stars Freak A zoid, I guarantee you will love it. It’s one of my favorites. You can’t stop moving when you hear it.

The original voice box / vocoda was invented way way way before the modern digital version. In simple terms this is how it works. There's a box on the floor at the bottom of the mic stand. in that box is a small speaker. When a foot switch is pressed it diverts the sound of the guitar to that speaker. The sound then travels up a plastic hose attached to the mic stand and into the mouth where it can be shaped and change by the guitarist. That sound is picked up by the vocal mic and amplified in the usual way. A simple device, but it takes someone to think of the idea in the first place.

My older sister was in high school 3:30 and every girl fell in love with him and me as a younger sister did too lol! He is and was so amazingly talented and a hottie. Great Reaction. The WORST example of audiences being told not to react live on a music TV show is Deep Purple's "Child In Time" which is manic and played to a non-responsive crowd which was weird and it is on KZbin.

It was a TV show called the midnight special , and they had to keep a certain decorum for TV viewers , that’s why audiences couldn’t let loose and be free to feel like we do ! 😊

I saw Peter Frampton play this live at least 3 times when he was touring with "Ringo Starr and His All-Star Band". He was bald by that time but still played the hell out of his guitar. He was not the first one to use the Talk Box but he was one of the best at it. The Talk Box had previously been used by Joe Walsh in the song "Rocky Mountain Way" and by Aerosmith in their song, "Sweet Emotion" (probably others too?). I was a sophomore in high school when the "Frampton Comes Alive" album came out and most of us went out and bought the album.

The best versions are the ones from the - Frampton Comes Alive - Album. "Show Me The Way," - "Baby, I Love Your Way," - "Do You Feel Like We Do" There is also great video versions from the 7/2/1977 - Oakland Coliseum Stadium concert.- Peter was also in the Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie along with an amazing group of stars from the music world. Including the Bee Gees and Aerosmith.

The reason the audience seemed so quiet is that, during a period from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s, it was considered uncool, kind of out of fashion, to really go wild at concerts. The screaming and fainting that occurred at Beatles concerts of the early 1960s was considered kind of silly by this point and audiences got to where they just sat rapt and sort of contemplative at shows, even at hard rock shows like Led Zeppelin, where they'd just nod their heads to the music. It's not that they were adopting cool, distant, inscrutable poses, as was sometimes the case in the eighties. The seventies were a very sincere period; audiences really did pay respectful attention. It just wasn't the thing to go wild. Some people say it was because they were so stoned, and that may have been part of it but it wasn't all of it. They would clap and wave lighters in the air, which can be pretty moving when done by thousands of people at once, but that was about as far as it got. It's not that people weren't enjoying the shows. They were. It's just that the times and fashions were pretty mellow.

I love his performance here but the audience is a dud. It's like they stood outside the studio and grabbed people off the street and made them listen. You should listen to the recording of this from "Frampton Comes Alive". No video but it's much better...and the audience goes crazy.

They're playing clean here but for me this version lacks the raw energy he can put into it. The end solo is a bit clunky and awkward compared to Frampton Comes Alive which just flows with perfection start to finish
