Hi Rob Squad! I haven’t even watched this yet but wanted to jump in. I worked with Mr. Stafford in the early 1980’s on a TV Show he co-hosted called Those Amazing Animals. My fondest memory is I was in charge of the runners on that show on shoot day. But I also was able to get an assignment to pick up Mr. Stafford at LAX on Sunday night and take him home. So I took the company Caddie and went to the airport. Greeted him and took him to the car. It was Sunday evening in Los Angeles in the 80’s. That meant Dr. Demento was on the radio. So I tuned it to the station and we had a nice drive to his home. Chatting and laughing at the songs. He was great to me and I have fond memories and I do have his album from the 70’s before I got to work with him. I already know you loved it, how could you not? Check out; My Girl Bill, for more greatness. Joe Edit: I watched the video Amber & Rob. As expected you loved it. Jim was magical and a cool guy and still around. ❤️ If you saw my story, first hand experience. I left a suggestion above for a funny. But you also, said you’d like to smile. I got another for that category. I know you love Carpenters, like me. I’m an OG fan from 1970 with my Close To You album. A song from that album which I believe you’ve reacted to is; We’ve Only Just Begun. What I’m recommending is for the first time in 54 years a proper cover of that song was created. Oh, no one can properly cover a Carpenters song, you say? I beg to differ and I’m OG. So I’m older and can be taken seriously. Get ready to smile, or stare or however you will react, just feel the wonder. James Wilkas created this cover with musicians from around the world and it features Tori Holub on lead and backing vocals. 300,000 views on KZbin, 4 Million views on I G. No autotune or pitch correction as verified by Wings Of Pegasus. We’ve Only Just Begun (Cover) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGqYnZmAptRsjLssi=HgF_NnAGjIMriV1E .

"Spiders & Snakes" is a 1974 hit song recorded by Jim Stafford and written by Stafford and David Bellamy of The Bellamy Brothers. It was the second of four U.S. Top 40 singles released from his eponymous debut album and also the highest-charting at number three. The lyrics in the verses are spoken, while only the chorus is sung. The song begins with the narrator being asked by a girl, Mary Lou, to walk her home from school, which he accepts. She says that she would like to spend some time alone together instead of going right home; the narrator agrees. They go to the swimming hole. While there, the narrator catches a frog on a hollow log. He shakes it at her saying "This frog's for you." Mary Lou informs him that she dislikes spiders and snakes. She adds that his actions are not the way to bring about a romantic response from her. After a while, the narrator phones her to get together again. She says that she'll see him after school. He is nervous this time, thinking of another scheme, when Mary Lou again tells him clearly of her dislike for spiders and snakes, reiterating the same unromantic reasons. “Spiders and Snakes” finished as the #53 song on NYC Radio’s 77 WABC’s Top 100 of 1974.

Randy Newman's "Short People" from 1978 is hilarious and actually caused some controversy. That's because some "short people" took offense to the lyrics. One artist you haven't done from the 60's is folk singer Phil Ochs, who was a contemporary of Bob Dylan. He mostly wrote about civil rights and other major issues of the time. One anti-war song he did actually has an amusing take on the then-military draft. "Draft Dodger Rag" is amusing and will allow you to dip into his impressive catalog of songs.

“The Streak” by Ray Stevens. In the mid-70s, streaking (running naked through a public place) was a big fad. Ray capitalized on this phenomenon with a hit song. A streaker even ran across the stage during the Academy Awards in 1974! David Niven was behind the microphone and made a priceless quip. Yes, it’s on KZbin. Also hilarious: “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot!” by Jerry Reed. This popular song became a catchphrase. Jerry tells the story of a crap game with his buddies.

Years ago, my wife volunteered as a midwife in Haiti for a couple of months. She said that Hatians love to catch banana spiders and make temporary pets of them, the way American kids would with caterpillars or something. She said the Haitians found it hilarious that she was completely creeped out by spiders, in some of them would make it a point to bring over the latest one they had caught just to screw with her. Then she found out that there is some sort of long-standing taboo against frogs in Haiti - Haitians are completely terrified of them for some reason. So naturally, the first frog she saw, she picked it up and brought it over to one of the Haitians who had been laughing at her about spiders, and he screamed like a little girl. 🤣

Has anyone else noticed how much these two have mirroring each other lately? I mean, they must be in love and happy. Imagine that. Two people in love with each. Three beautiful children. Discovering and sharing great music and movies together. Passing said music down to their kids. Sharing their experience with an audience of fans they made by simply being themselves. An audience that is over a half a million strong. Just like at Woodstock. And all they ask of us is that WE go out and make somebody smile. You two are the best ambassadors of the music and movies of my youth gone by. I am proud to be a card-carrying member of the Rob Squad and tell most people I know how much I enjoy your reactions three times a day. Four, if you include the movies. God Bless You. Jim Stafford grew up in Polk County Florida, I sold burgular alarms in Polk County in the 90's and got a call to go to his old home which he built after he was famous. The new owners wanted to add an alarm. I knew it was Jim Staffords old Home, as I approached the front door the bushes on the front porch were cut into perfect cubes and on the cube right next to the front door was a Black snake curled up perfectly in the middle of the cube. I thaught that was pretty funny to put a fake snake by the front door. (the old home of the guy who made the song Spiders and Snakes). I rang the bell and the snake departed. Obviously not fake. It was a strrange House, it had 13 glass double french doors and absolutly not one window in the whole house. Opend up on a lawn and about 100' down the lawn toward a lake was a large swiming pool.

Back in 1987, (yes, I'm old), I got to watch a live episode of "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" the Dirty Dancers were the guest, but Jim Stafford was the guy that talked to the studio audience, and he was hilarious.

Jim Stafford plays amazing classical guitar music as well. He's hugely talented and doesn't get nearly enough credit for his skills as a musician.

I think the song that put him on the map was more mainstream than this. Called "Swamp Witch". "Spiders & Snakes" came later.

That chika-chika, wakuh-wakuh sound is done on a guitar. This song was popular when I was in 6th grade....and we loved it! My wife would concur, in that she doesn't like spiders and snakes either!

There are a ton of humorous Country artists and songs. Roger Miller - Dang Me, Do-Wacka-Do, Chug-A Lug and You can't Rollerskate in a Buffalo Herd. Jenny C. Reilly - Harper Valley PTA. Johnny Cash - I've Been Everywhere. Jimmy Dean - Cajun Queen, Little Black Book & Sam Hill. Porter Waggoner - Wake up Jacob. And I recently rediscovered Tom T. Hall - A Week in a Country Jail, I Like Beer, That Song is Driving Me Crazy and my new favorite - Faster Horses. Also Roy Clark - Sally Was a Good Old Girl and the Great Pretender, where he does all the vocal parts LIVE. And even Hank Williams - Move it on Over.

Ok you guys have to do Robert Palmer's famous medley on his album Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley. Little Feat are the band recording with him on this album. The medley was a radio staple back in the day consisting of Lowell George's Sailin' Shoes into Hey Julia and right into Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley. You did Power Station and you did Palmer's 80's hits now it is time to get funky. Oh and I love Spiders and Snakes. :)
