Last Saturday, France completed the set: Under Fabien Galthie, they have now defeated every single tier one team, as they sent the Springboks spiralling towards a second successive loss. So what can we learn from these two teams in one of the best tests of 2022?

As a French fan, I agree with the analysis here, the Boks are probably the strongest team at the moment. Our coach Galthié, insists on the bigger collective experience this team has compared to us. 14 out 15 on the pitch were world cup winners and it shows. The French are building up cohesion,, lucidity to win games as well said here, and momentum but this SA side will be very hard to beat...With Ireland being strong and the AB and England probably arriving ready next year, exciting games ahead whatever happens!

One of the things I love about Squidge's videos is...the explanation about why seemingly controversial, dodgy moves (that winning French try) are not as iffy as they look. Or the breakdown of Kolisi's miraculous try. I actually think the Bok captain appeared out of a puff of smoke in mid air to score that. But that's my theory...

One thing you didn't mention on the first French try : if you look at Mbomanbi a bit before, he miss a line throw, he's completely out and doesn't do much in defence for a bit (and what he does, he does it very late), then leaves the field for a comossion. He probably took a hit to the head a bit before, and that's probably the reason why the space is as big as it is...

I think it was planned. Remember the try that Eben scored where the referee gave the opposition the penalty instead? We are trying things but we are doing it subtly.

The mix up between Kolisi and Mbonambi for the French try was very much to do with the fact that the Boks had a red card, it was a numbers game at that point. Failing to point that out seems a bit disingenuous, but I know it's Squidge, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt 😅 As a Bok supporter, it's strange, but I came away from that game thinking, I'm pretty happy with that (with the WC in mind), there is a lot to build on, and I feel we only lost because of our mistakes, and feeling we had won almost every head to head battle (especially physicality), but paid for a few stupid moments (including the red card). I think with 15 v 15 for the full match, this is a very different game. But only time will tell. Thanks to Les Bleus for a great game!

Always love your videos, but I have to wonder about the French try that you do not see as double movement. Fair enough that you state the French player's knees do not touch the ground, but his head and elbow did making him "tackled" and off feet according to world rugby laws since he is off his feet. Saw the same in yesterdays came when England was awarded the try in the 72th minute.
@darrylleeroberts
@darrylleeroberts Жыл бұрын
Exactly - both he and the ref got that call completely wrong. According to the rules, a player is deemed on the ground if any part of his body other than his feet touch the ground and support his weight. Quite clearly that French players head touches the ground long before the wriggling to cross the line. A blatant double move. Shocking that Barnes got that so wrong.

Great analysis again mate. One question , 11:03 Isn't his knees touching the ground? Yes I am South African so obviosly I am leaning towards double movement, and I am aware it's easy to spot in slow motion and with his body position he is not propelled of that knee like the rule suggest, but if you watch this in real time one can clearly see he was stopped twice before crawling over the line, it was not momentum like the rule suggest and if you are French you will argue his knees did not touch the ground. But he did not support his body weight and his momentum was stopped. Does this mean as long as your ass is in the air, knees not touching the ground and you are leaning on the ball in a ruck, you are allowed to crawl around a rugbyfield like a catapilar, remembering if the opposition try to tackle your legs it can be justified as side entry. To many grey areas and world rugby needs to look at it. The solution is simpler than one think, if the momentum is stopped and you cannot place the ball across the line, it's a ruck and those rules apply. Othewise we will have a lot of unhappy fans next year in the World cup. Great content keep them coming.

Firstly, clearly there is something going on with the particular TMO personal in this game as the same TMO personal cost New Zealand against England to the similar try except it was "grounded on the line" but there was no clear angle of the ball being grounded, I really could not care if New Zealand won or lost the game I do care when the TMO and referee "Professionals" make stupid mistakes and just guess/assume what happened, and please don't say "I am just calling match fixing because my team lost." This is not the first incident that has happened in a VERY short space of time, also I play rugby at club level, I have read the rules published by World Rugby, that last try against South Africa was at least 2 if not 3 movements then a shove, which is allowed, shoves are allowed but not double movements. Also I am happy to accept sometimes teams out play the Boks, what would the point of winning all the time be, unless it is in the World Cup then yes, win every game.

100% agree. Also the comms went down convenient when the TMO was supposed to check it. It only came back after the conversion. Coincidence… I think not. I was in Marseille at the game and they didn’t even show the replay of the try on the big screen! Can you imagine not showing the replay of the try of the home team. Even the French were complaining until they realized something was up and then they started booing … unfortunately Barnes buckled under the pressure of the crowed.

@@kesivan This is the first positive feedback I have ever had on this topic, So there you have had first hand experience of the wrong things going on in World Rugby, and it's sad to see, I think they could be trying to get the Boks down emotionally and psychologically ahead of the World Cup next year, maybe they just don't want South Africa to be the second country in the world to win two Rugby World Cups in a row, hence all the banning of Rassie after he clearly states he is not blamming the Referees, because when we have Rassie in as Coach we win.

Squidge, while I love your analysis of team tactics and how they aim to break teams down, the rules are not your area. If you are supporting your body weight with anything other than your feet, you are deemed off your feet. Why do you think jackaling players cannot lean on the tackled player when trying to steal? You can create a tripod with your feet and your head but the moment your head touches the ground you are off the feet and must place the ball.
@iabnatgeo
@iabnatgeo Жыл бұрын
I was wondering that too. The law says the player is brought to ground if he is lying, sitting or has one knee on the ground. He isn't lying or sitting. It's semantics, I know, but that's how I'd read it. But what the ref also needs to assess is: - to what extent is the ball carrier's forward momentum affected by the player bound on him driving forward and the defense pulling at him to access the ball ( both are clearly happening). Had it not been a try we have two penalties against SA including no tackle release and whatever Barnes stuck his arm out for.

Great vid as always. Would love the Boks to focus more on the game. Only error is at 15:23, it's neither DDA or Fourie, its Marx at number 16. The haircut is a giveaway.

Hard video for a South African to watch. But I also had the sense that: 1. SA is playing differently. More positive. 2. The two losses were more South Africa's fault than Ireland or France's brilliance. Taking nothing away from how brilliant Ireland and France are playing. And maybe what a scare they got playing South Africa. Maybe they are better off for playing South Africa. I am concerned that SA's mauls are not as succesful and SA is NOT scoring when they are 5 meters from tryline. Every other team is ABs, Australia, France, Ireland, and even England.

I need clarification on Ruck, Maul and Scrum rules.. Seems every Ref has his own ideas of what's legal and what's not. For me there's a clear leg lift in the maul for Arendse's try in front of Barnes? And the moment when a French player plays the 9 early and no penalty is given. And forming a wall in front of a player catching a high ball, is that not obstruction? At this point I have no idea what's allowed anymore..

I disagree France is very far from the peak, they did not play very well against Australia and SA after 6 months without playing together, Dupont and Ntamack (back from injury) were average. They did not win the usual french way but they won it a little bit « dirty ». (English style LOL) that is not our usual gameplay.

Tinny amendments!? You mean, like a genuine flyhalf and an reliables kicker as for the game against Ireland. Mate, b4 elaborating sophisticated analysis, watch to simple basics. In the first two games, excepting LeRoux' interventions, I basically didn't see no proper distribution of the ball in order to put them on the front foot for gaining momentum and disrupting the attacking - defense balance or parity, excepting individual breaks performed with a huge effort and spent of resources. As about Willemse's kicking game (South African playing foundation) , absolutely deficient... even against Italy. It must not be a coincidence if things radically changed when Libokk came on the pitch. After missing more than 10 kicking "kickeable" points in their previous match against Ireland, they understood that, in order to win, they need to score tries and for that they need to build up their attacks. This is the real reason they changed their game and also probably it was a matter of prestige and pride. Too many South Africans in France which know very well the local prejudges about Springboks' game ; well they wanted to prove that they aren't just buffaloes, but fine tacticians and spectacular ball players, which they did... As about the best team in the world, this is debatable, but from frenchies' feed back, it looks like they really are the best team in the world or at least the toughest to beat. Once again Springboks are rarely beaten or defeated (mostly by the ref), they usually are just loosing it (which is not the same thing) and with few exceptions this is the history of their failures for decades... PDV, Meyer, Coetzee eras are witnessing - 10 years of incompetence. This is coming from a Bleus supporter which is not in love with his own fantasies... Or, maybe, is seeing what you can't / refuse to see, just because you want/need to publish ridiculous vids based on assumptions and or delusional convictions (Rasie if you are watching this!?!?!? 😂😂😂😂😂)

Boks are their own worst enemies for sure. France is really good and it is excellent for next year's world cup. It's a shame how the world cup draws are set up, having Kiwis, Boks, Les Blues en Ireland all on the same side. Damn shame.

How can you make a video analysing a game and not know simple rules of rugby like being grounded is not just limited to the knee being on the ground. It’s also very easy to jump on the popular narrative and criticise Rassie and make fun of him without addressing the points he was making which you barely even touched upon. The pass wasn’t forward, the turnover at the end was illegal and the try was a double movement. World rugby has a huge problem with refereeing and it’s absolutely not limited to the Springboks however, people like you are part of the reason why things won’t change.

Congratulations to France. The single biggest eye opener from this test, would be that the Boks dominated a strong French pack with one man less for 70 minutes, and even with an additional forward sent of in the last 10 minutes. If they can get their full strength pack back from injuries for the World Cup, expect lots of pain coming it's way towards the other nations.
