I think the Boks got too comfortable in thinking a penalty was coming their way anytime they had a maul. As a South African, I am equally infuriated by our constant discussion of refereeing decisions long after the game has continued. That's not to suggest I believe referees should be immune from criticism, but I think that nit-picky armchair analysis on a marginal call is quite tiresome and quite self-righteous. South African fans used to be (and still largely are, hopefully) a likeable bunch with a decent camaraderie with rival fans, and I hope arrogance isn't taking over. With that said, thoroughly enjoying the Boks at the moment and huge respect as always to Wales, one of my favourite Boks opponents who always give us a brilliant test!
@LB_die_Kaapie3 жыл бұрын
Critiquing the ref =/= arrogance Regardless if its correct or not. Its passionate fans batting for their team any way they can. Maybe other teams just don't care as much as us and tbh thats good because like Rassie says ' when they stop talking about you then you have a problem'.

Great analysis yet again! As a Springbok supporter, the most frustrating part was discovering you are indeed correct in your analysis of the disallowed try. There was momentary advancing by Marx (and only Marx, who had the intent to move toward where the ball had been kicked).
@juanpbotha3 жыл бұрын
Don't agree. Do you and Squidge expect a player to immediately predict that the ball won't travel far and immediately retreat? That's unrealistic!
@RobertFall3 жыл бұрын
@Juan Sipho Habdad Botha It doesn’t matter what you think is unrealistic, it is what the law says. If you are in front of the kicker you MUST RETREAT. Marc knew he was in front of the kicker and still advanced. The law may be stupid but it’s the law as it stands and the ref followed it.
@StevenBenjaminAuthor3 жыл бұрын
@@RobertFall The law also says something about the team being penalized 'if the player directly interferes with play'. It's on the same level (in my mind anyway) as when a ref tells a player to stop and back of. From trying to compete in a ruck. If the player backs off, its play on, but technically in that moment he was in breath of the law, but the ref decided to use discretion. But yeah, feel if the roles were reversed the Welsh would also feel a sour if their try was disallowed. I'm pretty sure the Boks will go over the retreat law in practice this week tho
@jacovanniekerk7613 жыл бұрын
The call against the Boks is poor, but the example against the Welsh guy is worse. Both are very pedantic. If they police it like that 80% of kicks will result in a penalty against the kicking team. In both cases the players had 0 impact on the game...so fair play. Marx even retreated after he realised what was going on.
@juanpbotha3 жыл бұрын
@@RobertFall but then kicks by fly halfs (half backs) or any other back player, where forwards advance before being put onside, should also be penalised. You'll see the exact scenario happen at 3:08 on this link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5usZGxsrtmWftE (i.e. full game). There are just too many rules in rugby. @wesleycoetzee71363 жыл бұрын
Entertaining vid Squidge, but i have to take you on on your "addendum" at the end... You say Malcolm is advancing. Ok fair enough, they might be, but all players advance for like a split second because the kick might still go beyond the 10m as the ball is behind their backs for the split second they begin to advance. No way they could read it immediately that quick after the kick. Once realizing "oh shit ball not travelling far enough", they all immediately retreat. Your example of the equivalent for the ref consistency is also flawed, because Jenkins has a full view of the ball at the exact time of the kick, and even more time to have the kicking player put him on side. He mistimes his run and thus clearly off side. So not exactly the same is it? If we are then to strictly apply all laws at all time as per your requirement on the Bok try, including ruck laws, your praise of Beard being "smart" is also disingenuous. I know you are a Wales fan and if you wanted to be partisan about, I give you that, but please be honest about it.

its so clear you're a welsh fan. Beard did so many illegal things to bring down mauls, probably deserved 2 yellows. and for the try that should have been given, Marx begins to retreat as soon as he realises he's offside so he shouldn't be penalised.
@derekaarts49973 жыл бұрын
Squidge got that wrong. At time of kick Marx has one foot on each side of half-line. When ball is tapped back he has both feet behind half-line. So Marx moved forward for a split second before retreating. The laws say that he should retreat immediately. The laws also say that the tackler should release immediately but some leeway is always given. Why is Marx's immediately more immediate? My point. Simplify the rules.
@georgeowen25533 жыл бұрын
Referees have the right or ability to chose which rules to penalise more thoroughly with the general idea that 'games should run smoothly' (whatever that means). This referee chose to penalise the offside line carefully, and did so for both teams, ie with no discernible benefit to either team. One day a referee will focus on releasing tackles immediately, or putting the ball in straight so the opposing hooker has a chance to challenge (my bugbear). Refereeing is so complex nowadays that there are four working at all times, albeit with clearly-defined roles and only one whose final thought counts the most. It's understandable things get missed or their effort is focused on certain elements. Chances are that the referee even forewarned the teams exactly which aspects they were looking to referee strictly.
@blackmonday52953 жыл бұрын
@@georgeowen2553 Your reply simply complements what I am saying. Imagine Roger Federer saying that he has to adapt his game for how umpires apply the rules of tennis in the Australian Open. It is silly. Rugby rules should be simple and clear-cut, not ''open for interpretation''. That will decrease the pressure on referees and quell much of the spectator's frustration.

@@blackmonday5295 Rugby Union is such a complex game making the laws simpler is basically impossible. If you were being pedantic and applying all the laws as they are written without mercy, the game would stop every few seconds. If you make the laws simpler you will essentially end up with a completely different game, something more like Rugby League.

@S MM leaving it up to the referee to decide onfield which infringements to penalize and which not put him in an untenable position. Simplify the rules.
